You’ll also have the option to swap one day for a visit to Triberg’s famous waterfalls and cuckoo clocks. If you have an extra day, we’ve included an easy train trip to the colorful Alsatian town of Colmar, France.

Midday: Hike Schlossberg

Head uphill for panoramic city views.

Suggested route:

  • Old Town → Kanonenplatz → Schlossberg Tower → return via forest paths
  • Distance: 3–5 miles (5–8 km), depending on which trails you choose.
  • The traditional loop over the Schlossberg can be found here on Alltrails.

Consider a stop at Dattler for lunch or dinner with a spectacular view over Freiburg.

Pro Tip: There are some steep sections of the trail. For those who’d like to avoid the steep up and downhill sections, consider taking the Schlossbergbahn funicular up or down. There are flatter sections that you can walk once you reach the top of the funicular.

Allow: 1–2 hours.

For a change of pace this evening, consider a culinary tour of Freiburg.

Day 3: Explore the Black Forest High Road by Train & Bus

One of the highlights of this Freiburg slow travel itinerary is discovering that you don’t need a car to experience the Black Forest’s mountain scenery. Today combines scenic train rides, one of Germany’s most beautiful bus routes, alpine lakes, and a peaceful forest waterfall.

Morning: Train to Baden-Baden

Start your day with a regional train from Freiburg to Baden-Baden.

Travel time: Approximately 1.5 hours

Enjoy the changing scenery as vineyards gradually give way to forested hills before arriving in the elegant spa town of Baden-Baden.

Ride the Black Forest High Road

From Baden-Baden station, board Bus X45, which follows much of the famous Black Forest High Road (Schwarzwaldhochstraße).

Instead of focusing on driving, sit back and enjoy the journey as the bus climbs into the mountains, passing dense forests, scenic overlooks, and traditional Black Forest villages.

If possible, sit on the right-hand side of the bus for some of the best views.

Stop at Mummelsee

Hop off at Mummelsee, one of the Black Forest’s most picturesque mountain lakes.

Spend a few relaxing hours:

  • Walk the easy lakeside trail (about 30 minutes)
  • Enjoy coffee or a slice of Black Forest cake overlooking the lake
  • Browse local artisan shops
  • Rent a paddle boat during the summer months

Allow 1½–2 hours.

Optional: Extend your walk to include a hike up to the summit of the Hornisgrinde. This variation is about 8.5 km long and typically takes 2.5-3 hours. The Grindehütte is a wonderful spot to enjoy lunch with stunning views.

Pro Tip: It can be significantly colder up on the Hornisgrinde, especially compared to Freiburg. Be sure to pack an extra layer (including hat and gloves).

Mummelsee Mermaid Schwarzwald

Optional Stop: Geroldsauer Waterfalls

On your return toward Baden-Baden, consider breaking the journey at Geroldsau for a visit to the Geroldsauer Waterfalls.

A gentle woodland trail leads to the cascading falls through a beautiful mixed forest that is particularly colorful in spring and autumn. If time allows, continue on the trail above the falls. We enjoyed this area as much as the falls themselves.

Allow 45–60 minutes.

Return to Freiburg by train in the evening.

Slow travel tip: Rather than trying to fit in multiple destinations, enjoy a leisurely lunch by the lake or simply linger at one of Mummelsee’s viewpoints. This is a day to appreciate the landscape rather than rush through it.

Day 4: Gengenbach & Forest Vineyards OR Triburg’s Waterfalls & Cuckoo Clocks

Today combines one of the Black Forest’s most beautiful medieval towns with an easy hike through vineyards and rolling hills. It’s one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Freiburg by public transportation.

Morning: Explore Gengenbach

Take the train from Freiburg to Gengenback, roughly 30 minutes by direct regional train.

Often considered one of Germany’s prettiest half-timbered towns, Gengenbach is known for its colorful façades, flower-filled squares, and welcoming atmosphere.

Spend the morning wandering at your own pace.

Highlights include:

  • Market Square (Marktplatz)
  • Historic half-timbered buildings
  • Kinzig Tower
  • Medieval town walls
  • Small boutiques and artisan shops
  • Cozy cafés and bakeries

Allow 2–3 hours to simply enjoy the town without rushing.

Afternoon: Hike Through the Vineyards

One of Gengenbach’s greatest advantages is that scenic walking trails begin just a few minutes from the Old Town.

Choose one of several well-marked vineyard walks that climb gently above the town for panoramic views of the Kinzig Valley and surrounding Black Forest.

Expect:

  • Vineyard-covered hillsides
  • Forest paths
  • Traditional farmhouses
  • Excellent viewpoints over Gengenbach

Depending on your pace, plan on hiking 2–5 miles (3–8 km).

If you’d rather take it easy, enjoy lunch at a vineyard restaurant or winery, such as Winzerstüble Gengenbach, before returning to Freiburg.

Optional Extension: Visit Schiltach

If you’d like to explore another picturesque Black Forest town, continue by regional train to Schiltach (approximately 45–50 minutes from Gengenbach).

Nestled where the Kinzig and Schiltach rivers meet, Schiltach is one of the region’s most photogenic villages.

Highlights include:

  • Beautiful half-timbered houses
  • Riverside walking paths
  • Historic Market Square
  • Small museums and artisan shops

Spend an hour or two wandering before returning to Freiburg via Offenburg.

Alternative Day Trip: Triberg Waterfalls & Black Forest Cuckoo Clocks

If waterfalls and traditional Black Forest culture are higher on your wish list than vineyards, consider substituting today’s itinerary with a day trip to Triberg.

From Freiburg, regional trains reach Triberg in approximately 2 hours.

There you can:

  • Walk to the impressive Triberg Waterfalls, one of Germany’s highest waterfalls
  • Browse shops selling handcrafted Black Forest cuckoo clocks
  • Visit one of the town’s famous oversized cuckoo clocks
  • Learn about the centuries-old clockmaking tradition that made the Black Forest famous around the world

While Triberg is a longer journey than Gengenbach, it’s a worthwhile alternative for travelers interested in the region’s iconic waterfalls and cultural heritage.

Day 5: Slow Freiburg Day OR Day Trip to Titisee

After several days of exploring, use Day 5 as either a slower local day in Freiburg or for one final Black Forest adventure.

Choose the option that fits your energy level and travel style.

Option 1: Relaxed Freiburg Day

Stay close to your base and enjoy Freiburg at a slower pace. Choose one (or combine a few):

Schauinsland MountainTake the tram and cable car up to Freiburg’s local mountain for panoramic views, easy hiking, cafés.
Vineyard WalkExplore vineyard trails just outside the city, especially beautiful in late summer or fall.
Dreisam River Walk or Bike RideRent bikes or enjoy an easy riverside walk.
Café + Market DayWander Old Town
Visit local shops
Sit at cafés
Return to favorite places

Option 2: Day Trip to Titisee (Perfect for a Relaxed Nature Day)

If you’d prefer one more excursion, spend the day at Titisee—one of the Black Forest’s best-known lakes.

Morning: Explore Titisee Village

Take the train 35-40 minutes from Freiburg to Titisee.

Start by wandering the lakeside town.

Things to do:

  • Browse local shops
  • Stop for coffee
  • Enjoy lakeside views

Titisee is more developed than some Black Forest villages, but the scenery still makes it worthwhile.

Midday: Walk Around the Lake

One of the best ways to experience Titisee is on foot.

Enjoy a partial lakeside walk or full loop around the lake (approximately 4 miles / 6 km)

Expect:

  • Forest sections
  • Water views
  • Small beach areas
  • Boat activity in summer

This is especially beautiful in autumn with the leaves changing colors.

Afternoon: Get out on the Water

Depending on season:

Choose from:

  • Paddle boats
  • Row boats
  • SUP’s or kayaks
  • Swimming areas
  • Lakeside relaxation

If you enjoy active but gentle travel, this makes a nice contrast to the waterfall and hiking days earlier in the itinerary.

Optional Add-On: Short Hike or Spa Time

If you want more movement:
Take a short forest hike above the lake.

If you want recovery:
Visit one of the nearby wellness or spa facilities, such as the Badeparadise Schwarzwald Titisee or Treschers Schwarzwald.

Optional Day 6 Extension: Colmar, France

If you have another day, Colmar makes an excellent cross-border extension. Trains and buses both take about 1 hour 35 minutes each way.

Things to Do

  • Wander colorful Old Town
  • Explore canals in Little Venice
  • Browse markets and cafés
  • Visit museums
  • Enjoy Alsatian food

This works especially well after several nature-focused days.

Stay until evening and return to Freiburg.
