Located near the town of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland, the falls are approximately 23 metres (75 feet) high. While they aren’t particularly tall, the incredible volume of water, roaring sound, and mist-filled atmosphere create one of Europe’s most impressive natural spectacles.
Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) are the largest waterfalls in Europe, with up to 600 cubic metres of water per second cascading over a 150-metre-wide limestone ledge during peak summer flow.
Unlike many waterfalls that require long hikes to reach, Rhine Falls is easily accessible and offers several viewing platforms, walking trails, historic castles, and boat trips that take you remarkably close to the rushing water.
Is Rhine Falls Worth Visiting?
Absolutely—especially if you’re already traveling through Switzerland or the Black Forest. Although the falls are one of Switzerland’s most popular attractions, they rarely feel overcrowded if you visit early in the day or later in the afternoon.
Rhine Falls is worth visiting if you enjoy spectacular natural scenery, easy walks in nature, photography, boat rides, and historic castles.
We do recommend combining a visit to the falls with stops at nearby towns such as Stein am Rhein and nearby Lake Constance.
Best Time to Visit Rhine Falls
If there’s one secret to enjoying Rhine Falls, it’s avoiding the busiest hours. Tour groups typically begin arriving from Zurich between mid-morning and early afternoon, making the viewing platforms and boat docks considerably busier.
If you’re visiting Spring through Autumn, we’d recommend arriving before 9 am, or visiting after 5 pm.
If you visit in winter, keep in mind that the water levels are typically lower and boat services may be limited. This comes with fewer visitors and a much quieter experience any time of day.
How to Get to Rhine Falls
Rhine Falls is easy to reach whether you’re staying in Switzerland or nearby Germany.
| From Zürich, Switzerland | 50-60 minutes by train to Neuhausen Rheinfall or Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall stations. 45-50 minutes by car. |
| From Basel, Switzerland | 1 hour 45 minutes on average by train with 1 connection. 1 hour 15 minutes on average by car. |

Tip: Remember to carry your passport or national ID when crossing into Switzerland. If you’re driving a rental car, confirm that cross-border travel into Switzerland is permitted.
Which Side of Rhine Falls Should You Visit?
There are two main entrances. The south side is the more popular side and offers closer views of the falls. If it’s your first visit, leave time to visit both sides if possible.

How to Visit Rhine Falls Without a Tour
Visiting independently is straightforward. A relaxed visit takes about two to three hours.
Suggested itinerary:
- Arrive early in the morning by car or train.
- Walk the Panorama Trail down to the falls.
- Visit the viewing platforms.
- Take a boat ride.
- Cross to the opposite bank if time allows.
- Enjoy a coffee or lunch overlooking the river.
Everything is well signposted, making a guided tour unnecessary for most visitors.

A boat trip is one of the highlights of any visit. Most tours can be booked on site, though we’d recommend reserving in advance during peak periods (or peak hours). Costs range from 6 CHF to 22.50 CHF in 2026. Tickets can be booked directly on the Rhyfall Mändli site.

Parking at Rhine Falls
| Paid Parking | South side: Schloss Laufen Visitor Car Park. These are the closest to the falls. North side: Neuhausen Parking. These are a good choice if you’re planning to take a boat tour or explore Neuhausen afterwards. |

For most visitors, the official paid car parks are the easiest and most convenient option.
Combine Rhine Falls with Stein am Rhein
If you have a full day available, don’t head home immediately after visiting the falls. Just 20 minutes away lies Stein am Rhein, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful medieval towns.
Highlights include colorfully painted half-timbered buildings, the historic market square, St. George’s Abbey, and Rhine river walks.
Stein am Rhein makes an excellent lunch stop after visiting the falls and offers a completely different experience from the dramatic natural scenery of Rhine Falls. Try the Hotel Restaurant Rheinfels for its wonderful service and views over the river.
Continue to Lake Constance
If you're driving, consider extending your day to Lake Constance (Bodensee).
Within 30–45 minutes of Stein am Rhein, you'll reach the lake's western shoreline, where you can enjoy:
- Lakeside promenades
- Swimming beaches in summer
- Scenic cycling paths
- Boat cruises
- Vineyards overlooking the lake
- Charming waterfront towns such as Steckborn, Ermatingen, and Kreuzlingen
Those with more time can continue to the popular destinations of Konstanz or Meersburg, making for an unforgettable day combining waterfalls, medieval villages, and one of Europe's most beautiful lakes.

- 8:30 AM: Arrive at Rhine Falls

The Rhine waterfall is my favourite one in Europe. The views are really breathtaking + a lot to see around. I love cute little towns in radius of 20-40 km from the waterfall.

I visited many years ago and really enjoyed them! They may not be very high or very spectacular, but we stood at the lower end, watching the masses of water crash down, it was autumn, a bit foggy… fairytale atmosphere! I like both Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein, Stein might be a bit more touristy, Schaffhausen is more like a regular (but very pretty) town. The IWC watch Museum and factory are in Schaffhausen, too, and excellent.
