Rastoke Waterfalls Village, Croatia: An Active Base for Plitvice

The Rastoke waterfalls village in Croatia is often treated as a quick stop on the way from Zagreb to Plitvice Lakes National Park. But after staying in Rastoke ourselves, we think this tiny village deserves much more than an hour or two. Located in Slunj, about 30 kilometers north of Plitvice Lakes, Rastoke, Croatia is sometimes called “Little Plitvice.” Here the Slunjčica River splits into channels before cascading over travertine barriers into the Korana River, creating 23 waterfalls throughout the village. Traditional wooden homes, historic watermills, bridges, and gardens have been built around the rushing water.

While Plitvice offers a variety of hiking options, Rastoke and the surrounding Slunj region give you many more ways to get outdoors. You can hike along the Slunjčica River, mountain bike through the surrounding countryside, kayak the Mrežnica River, swim in the Korana, or simply walk from waterfall to waterfall through the village. We stayed right among the waterfalls, quickly discovering that Rastoke deserves to be a destination rather than simply a roadside stop. For active travelers, we think Rastoke waterfalls village is one of the best places to stay near Plitvice Lakes.

Rastoke or Plitvice: Where Should You Stay?

If you’re deciding where to stay for your Plitvice Lakes visit, the choice between Rastoke and Plitvice comes down to convenience versus activities. Staying immediately outside Plitvice Lakes National Park makes it easier to arrive when the park opens. If you only have one day, we’d prioritize that convenience. But for two or more nights, we’d strongly consider staying in Rastoke, taking day trips into the park.

For a quick overnight before visiting Plitvice, we’d stay close to the park.

For a two- or three-night stay, we’d choose Rastoke. The relatively short drive or bus ride to Plitvice is a worthwhile tradeoff for having so much more to explore outside the park.

Experience Rastoke Without the Visitors

There’s another advantage we didn’t fully appreciate until we stayed here: Rastoke feels completely different once the day visitors leave. Buses and tour groups from Zagreb often stop in Rastoke on their way to or from Plitvice. During the middle of the day, the paths and viewpoints can therefore get busy.

Early in the morning and later in the evening, it’s a different experience. We stayed right among the waterfalls at Guesthouse Pod rastockim krovom (within Slovin Unique), and some of our favorite moments came before and after normal sightseeing hours. We took a few steps outside and could do yoga on the empty grounds overlooking the waterfalls. Wandering around the waterfalls and down to the cave with virtually no one else around to capture sunset photos was incredible (the sunset below was captured on the top of the stairs to the cave). Instead of experiencing Rastoke as another sightseeing stop, staying overnight allowed us to slow down and really enjoy the village.

Best Things to Do in Rastoke, Croatia

Although seeing the waterfalls is the obvious highlight, there’s much more to do around Rastoke than you might expect.

1. Walk Around the Rastoke Waterfalls

Start by simply exploring the Rastoke waterfalls and historic village on foot. The roughly 2.5-kilometer Rastoke circular promenade winds around the village, connecting waterfalls, historic buildings, bridges, river views, and scenic overlooks. Allow at least an hour, although we’d recommend considerably longer. We stopped repeatedly for photos and to wander down side trails.

Part of the village can be explored without an entrance ticket. A section known as the Vodene Tajne (Water Secrets) trail requires an entrance fee and provides access to additional viewpoints, including the Korana River canyon and waterfalls and the new bridge beneath Jareb Mill. Tickets can be bought on the Slunj website. We enjoyed our walk down this trail, though spent a lot more time exploring other parts of Rastoke.

And remember that Rastoke is a residential village, so be respectful of private homes and property while exploring.

2. Explore Slovin Unique

Even if you aren’t staying overnight, Slovin Unique is worth visiting. This privately owned estate sits in the heart of Rastoke waterfalls village, with paths leading through gardens and past streams, historic mill buildings, waterfalls, and a small cave. It’s a particularly immersive way to experience the unusual landscape, allowing you to get much closer to some of the waterways than you can from the surrounding roads.

We enjoyed exploring during the day, but staying overnight made it even more memorable. Be sure to check the Slovin Unique website for the latest hours (generally open 9 am-9 pm, closed on Tuesdays).

We enjoyed great service and delicious food at the on-site restaurant, Tavern Pod rastočkim krovom. On a nice day, enjoy your meal or a drink sitting outside overlooking the water. The cozy indoor area is perfect for a colder day.

3. Hike Through Jelvik Forest to the Korana River

For an easy hike close to Rastoke, head into Jelvik Forest. The trail begins near Napoleon’s Magazine (a 19th century grain warehouse) and is crisscrossed by trails beneath the trees. You can continue downhill toward the Korana River and local swimming areas before eventually looping back toward Rastoke. This is a particularly good option on a warm day, when you can combine a shaded 3 km walk with some time beside the river.

4. Hike Along the Slunjčica River

For something longer, follow the Slunjčica River upstream. You can hike toward the source and return the same way or extend your adventure through Melnica Forest for a route of up to 17.5 kilometers. It’s a great contrast to the developed paths at Plitvice. Within a relatively short distance, you’ll leave Rastoke’s waterfalls and watermills behind for forest, limestone cliffs, and a much quieter river landscape.

5. Go Mountain Biking Around Rastoke

The extensive cycling network was another reason we liked Rastoke as an active base near Plitvice. The Slunj region has more than 100 kilometers of designated cycling routes, ranging from recreational rides to more demanding routes incorporating pavement, gravel, and forest roads.

Several routes begin around Rastoke, allowing you to head directly from the village into the surrounding countryside.

• For an easy ride on forested roads, head out on the Slunj-Rastoke trail (roughly 4.3 km).

One option is Route 26, which starts in Rastoke and heads toward Broćanac. After passing Napoleon’s Warehouse and the old Frankopan town, the route climbs toward Lumbardenik before transitioning onto gravel and forest tracks.

Bikes and e-bikes can also be rented locally at Rastoke Active.

Pro Tip: If you have a half-day, consider an e-bike tour of the Rakovica countryside.

6. Kayak the Mrežnica River

If we were choosing one adventure to add to a Rastoke stay, kayaking the Mrežnica River would be high on the list. The Mrežnica is known for its clear green-blue water, travertine waterfalls, rapids, and peaceful pools. Several outfitters around Slunj offer guided half-day kayaking trips, with options suitable for beginners.

Depending on the route and conditions, you may paddle over small waterfalls and rapids, swim in the river, and navigate sections of the canyon. After walking the boardwalks at Plitvice, kayaking offers a completely different way to experience Croatia’s rivers and waterfalls.

7. Swim in the Korana River

Visiting Rastoke in the warmer months? Be sure to bring a swimsuit. The Korana River has swimming areas within walking distance of the village. You can also combine swimming with a walk through Jelvik Forest to find quieter spots along the river.

After a hot day exploring Plitvice, returning to Rastoke for a swim is another compelling reason to stay here.

Pro Tip: Always check current river conditions before entering the water, particularly following heavy rain.

8. Explore Slunj Old Town

While the waterfalls are incredible, there is much more to see. Walk uphill from Rastoke into Slunj to explore the remains of the 14th century Frankopan fortress overlooking the river landscape. Nearby you'll find Napoleon's Warehouse, dating from the period of French administration in the early 1800's. From here, you can continue into Jelvik Forest or head back toward Rastoke.

One easy afternoon or evening route is:

Rastoke → Slunj Old Town → Napoleon's Warehouse → Jelvik Forest → Korana River → Rastoke

Where to Stay in Rastoke Waterfalls Village

You'll find small guesthouses, apartments, and traditional homes around Rastoke and neighboring Slunj. But if this is your first visit, we'd recommend staying directly among the waterfalls if your budget allows.

Slovin Unique: Where We Stayed in Rastoke

We stayed at Guesthouse Pod rastockim krovom in Slovin Unique, where we were essentially sleeping among the waterfalls. The estate has paths winding past streams, gardens, historic mill buildings, waterfalls, and a small cave. Being able to walk down to the cave or explore the waterfalls with virtually no one else around made our stay particularly memorable.

Slovin Unique offers several types of accommodations, ranging from rooms to a bungalow and apartment. There's also a traditional restaurant on the property.

Other Places to Stay in Rastoke

But for a first visit, we think waking up to the sound of the Rastoke waterfalls is worth the splurge.

How Many Nights Do You Need in Rastoke?

You can see the main Rastoke waterfalls in a few hours, but we'd recommend at least two nights if you're using the village as a base for Plitvice.

Three nights is even better for active travelers.

Instead of squeezing the national park into one long day, take a few days to explore Plitvice Lakes more slowly while also experiencing some of the region's lesser-known outdoor adventures.

Tips for Visiting Rastoke, Croatia

• Don't treat Rastoke as just a quick stop. Outdoor travelers can easily spend a full day—or several nights—here.
• Stay overnight if possible. Seeing Rastoke waterfalls village early in the morning and evening without most day visitors was one of our favorite parts of our visit.
• You can visit Rastoke waterfalls village year-round, but late spring through early fall offers the widest range of outdoor activities.
• Bring shoes with good traction. Paths around the waterfalls can be wet and slippery.
• Rent a bike or e-bike. The local cycling network makes it easy to explore well beyond the village.
• Reserve kayaking well in advance in summer. Popular trips can fill during the busiest months.
• Respect private property. Rastoke is a living village. Some historic mills and estates welcome visitors, while others remain private homes.

Is Rastoke Waterfalls Village Worth Visiting?

Absolutely—especially if you enjoy active travel. It's easy to understand why Rastoke waterfalls village is overshadowed by nearby Plitvice Lakes. Few places can compete with Croatia's most famous national park.

But that's also why we think staying in Rastoke rather than simply visiting for an hour works so well.

Plitvice gives you an extraordinary landscape to explore on foot. Rastoke adds bike rides through the countryside, hikes beside quiet rivers, swimming in the Korana, kayaking on the Mrežnica, and evenings surrounded by waterfalls in a centuries-old village.
