Day 1: Exploring the Undiscovered

Morning: Quiet Walk up Marjan Hill

You’ll start the 1st of 2 days in Split early with a hike up Marjan Hill to the Marjan Viewpoint. This 3.1 km hike goes up 178 meters in elevation. You’ll be treated to panoramic views of Split and the coast once you reach the top. Marjan Forest Park offers a peaceful escape from city life. Hike up early in the morning, with a quick stop to pick up a coffee at the first platform to enjoy at the topPlan a few hours to enjoy the hike, a coffee on top, and leisurely stroll back down. If you prefer to extend the hike, there are other longer loops around Marjam Park to enjoy.

Afternoon: Varoš, the old fishermen’s district

After wrapping up your hike, venture into charming Varoš, the old fishermen’s district. This area is less frequented by tourists and retains an authentic charm. Wander through narrow labyrinthine alleyways, admire the quaint white stone houses, and medieval churches. Enjoy a quiet lunch at a local konoba, such as Konoba Varoš, which is away from the touristy areas and has friendly service, excellent seafood, and wonderful pasta.

Evening: Sunset at Kasjuni Beach

Conclude your 1st of 2 days in Split at Kasjuni Beach, which sits on one side of Marjan Hill and is one of Split’s best spots to watch the sunset. It is much quieter than Bacvice Beach, and enjoys clear and turquoise waters. If you’re feeling adventurous, explore the nearby caves. You’ll also find Joe’s Beach Bar nearby.

Day 2: Cultural Immersion and Relaxation

Early Morning: Old Town

Begin your second day in Split with the magic of Diocletian’s Palace. As the city sleeps, stroll past the ancient walls of the eastern Silver Gate and into the heart of the palace, where the Peristyle, the central square of the complex, invites you in with its timeless allure. This is the perfect time to capture photographs without the distraction of bustling tourists or to simply soak in the ambiance of this historical marvel.

Continue to the Golden Gate, once the main entrance to the palace,. As the sun rises, make your way to Pjaca (People’s Square), where the Venetian architecture and the old Town Hall provide a stunning backdrop for a peaceful morning. Enjoy the quiet of the square, which buzzes with life during the day, now yours to admire in solitude.

This early morning walk sets a tranquil tone for the rest of your day, allowing you to appreciate the grandeur of Split’s history in a rare moment of calm.

Late Morning: Visit the Gallery of Fine Arts

As the crowds pick up in the top tourist spots, head over to the Gallery of Fine Arts. This lesser-known gem houses an impressive collection of Croatian art, reflecting the various states that ruled this region. This gallery is often overlooked by tourists, but is definitely worth a visit.

Afternoon: Stroll Through the Medieval Town of Trogir

Take a short bus or ferry ride to the UNESCO-listed island town of Trogir. Note that the ferry only runs during high season, but it is worth the trip if it’s running while you are in town. Trogir is a medieval treasure, less crowded but equally as charming as Split’s center. You’ll find a mix of Venetian, as well as Greek and Roman architecture and history as you wander through the narrow streets of Trogir.

Explore the historic buildings and quaint cafes. We’d suggest a walking tour such as this one to learn more about the interesting history of this city.

Evening: Relaxing Dinner

After returning to Split, head to a local konoba such as Konoba Matejuška, which is housed in a 19th century stone building within the UNESCO heritage site. They serve fresh and local foods, sourced from the sea and the local Dalmatian countryside.

Concluding your 2 Days in Split

Split, with its rich history and stunning landscapes, offers so much more beyond the usual tourist spots. This 2-day Split itinerary lets you experience the city’s authentic charm while avoiding the crowds.

Travel Tips

Where to Stay

We would recommend staying in or near old town Split. Some of our preferred locations are:

  • Piazza Heritage Hotel is right in old town, has a restaurant in house, air conditioned rooms and also studios (with kitchens). Luxury.
  • Central Square Heritage Hotel is also right in old town, providing convenient access to Diocletian’s Palace. Moderate.

If you prefer to stay near the beach, a few options are:

  • Bel Residence is a short walk to 2 beaches, and 20 minutes from Diocletian’s Palace. Budget-Moderate.
  • Alba Residence has a rooftop restaurant with views over the beach. Short walk to Firule Beach and Bačvice Beach, 15 minute walk to Diocletian’s Plalace. Moderate.

Getting to Split

For international travelers, the most common route is flying into Split Airport, which is well-connected with major European cities. From the airport, a short bus or taxi ride will take you directly into the heart of the city.

For those already in Europe, taking a train to Split offers a scenic route through the European countryside, though it’s worth noting that train journeys may involve a transfer in Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. Another popular option is arriving by ferry, especially for visitors from nearby Croatian and Italian ports.

Driving to Split is also a feasible choice, with well-maintained roads and highways connecting it to other major cities in Croatia and neighboring countries, making the journey a scenic road trip. Each mode of travel offers its own unique experience, setting the stage for your memorable visit to Split.
