Paklenica National Park Hiking: A Half-Day Hike Through Velika Paklenica Canyon

When most people think of national park vacations in Croatia, Plitvice Lakes and Krka’s waterfalls come to mind. f you’re driving from Plitvice Lakes toward Trogir or Split, there’s another Croatian national park that’s well worth adding to your itinerary, Paklenica National Park. Set in the southern Velebit Mountains near the Adriatic coast, Paklenica feels completely different from the waterfalls and turquoise lakes of Plitvice. Hiking trails in Paklenica National Park run through a narrow canyon with towering limestone cliffs and past rock climbers scale seemingly impossible walls.

You could easily spend several days hiking in Paklenica National Park, with its 150-200 kilometers of trails. But if you’re traveling between Plitvice and the Dalmatian Coast, half a day is enough to experience one of its highlights: the Velika Paklenica Canyon hike to the Paklenica Mountain Hut. We found this to be a perfect way to break up the drive while experiencing yet another side of Croatia’s incredibly diverse landscapes.

Paklenica National Park at a Glance

Why Visit Paklenica Between Plitvice and Split?

One of the things we loved most about traveling through Croatia was how quickly the scenery changed. Around Plitvice Lakes and Rastoke, you’re surrounded by lush forests, waterfalls and impossibly clear lakes. Drive toward the coast and the landscape becomes increasingly rugged as you approach the Velebit Mountains.

Paklenica National Park protects some of the most spectacular terrain in this mountain range. The park’s two dramatic canyons—Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica—cut deep into the limestone mountains. Velika Paklenica is the more accessible of the two and the best choice if you only have a half day to explore.

It’s also relatively easy to incorporate into a road trip from Plitvice to Split or Trogir. Rather than spending the entire day in the car, you can spend several hours hiking before continuing south along the coast.

Best Half-Day Paklenica National Park Hike: Velika Paklenica Canyon

For a half-day visit, we’d recommend focusing primarily on the Velika Paklenica Canyon hike to the Paklenica Mountain Hut.

The route begins from the main parking area inside Entrance 1 and follows the canyon deeper into the Velebit Mountains.

Your destination is the Paklenica Mountain Hut, approximately 6 kilometers (3.75 miles) from the main parking area. Allow about 2 hours of hiking each way, making this roughly a four-hour round-trip hike.

Hiking Through Velika Paklenica Canyon

The beginning of the hike is arguably the most dramatic section. Almost immediately, enormous limestone walls rise on either side of the trail. Paklenica is one of Croatia’s premier rock-climbing destinations, and you’ll likely spot climbers working their way up the cliffs above you.

The trail climbs steadily through the narrowest section of Velika Paklenica Canyon. This is the portion where you’ll gain much of your elevation, so don’t be surprised if the beginning feels harder than expected. Fortunately, the scenery gives you plenty of excuses to stop. Keep an eye out for Winnetu filming location signs along the way.

Turn around occasionally as you climb—the views back through the canyon are just as impressive as those ahead.

From the Canyon Into the Forest

Eventually, the canyon begins to widen and the exposed limestone walls gradually give way to a greener landscape. It’s shadier here, which can be a welcome change on a hot day. This was one of our favorite aspects of the Velika Paklenica Canyon hike. Rather than seeing the same scenery for four hours, you’re moving through several distinctly different environments.

You’ll continue alongside the Velika Paklenica stream, passing traditional stone buildings and quieter stretches of forest as you head farther into the mountains. There are fewer people the farther you walk from the climbing areas near the entrance.

Lugarnica Foresters House

Before reaching the mountain hut, you’ll reach the Lugarnica Foresters House, another popular destination for shorter hikes into the canyon. This is about 4 km (2.5 miles) from the start of the hike, making this a logical turnaround point for those who’d like a shorter hike. Grab a bite to eat or coffee here when it’s open, or use the basic restrooms across the path before continuing on.

Reaching the Paklenica Mountain Hut

At roughly 6 kilometers (3.75 miles) from the parking area, you’ll reach the Paklenica Mountain Hut, set alongside the Velika Paklenica stream. For hikers continuing into the Velebit Mountains, the hut is a jumping-off point for much longer adventures.

For a half-day visitor, it’s the perfect turnaround point. Take some time here to rest, have a snack or meal and enjoy the mountain setting before retracing your route through the canyon.

Wildlife in Paklenica National Park

Don't become so focused on the dramatic cliffs that you forget to look for wildlife along the trail.

Paklenica's combination of Mediterranean, forest and mountain habitats supports an impressive variety of animals. More than 250 bird species have been recorded in and around the park, including birds that make their homes among the rocky cliffs of Velika and Mala Paklenica. You may also spot lizards and other reptiles warming themselves on the rocks.

We didn't see any larger mammals, but the park has chamois, red deer, roe deer and wild boar. Brown bears, wolves and lynx inhabit the more remote parts of the Velebit Mountains. You're much more likely to see evidence of these animals than encounter them on a busy half-day hike.

Keep an eye out for butterflies and other pollinators along the trail. We especially enjoyed watching hummingbird moths hovering around the flowers. With their rapidly beating wings and ability to hover while feeding, they're remarkably easy to mistake for tiny hummingbirds at first glance.

Other Things to Do in Paklenica National Park

If you have more time—or don't want to hike all the way to the Mountain Hut—there are several other things to do in Paklenica:

• Rock climbing: Paklenica is one of Croatia's top climbing destinations, with hundreds of routes on the limestone cliffs of Velika Paklenica Canyon. Even if you're not climbing, it's fun to watch climbers from the trail.
• Underground Secrets of Paklenica: Near the canyon entrance, this visitor center occupies tunnels built by the Yugoslav Army in the early 1950s. Interactive exhibits cover Paklenica's geology, wildlife, climbing and mountain-rescue history. There's an additional fee to enter.
• Manita Peć Cave: The park's show cave features stalactites, stalagmites and large underground chambers. It's about a 1.5-hour hike from the Velika Paklenica parking area.

With only half a day, we'd prioritize the Velika Paklenica Canyon hike rather than trying to fit everything in. If you have extra time after your hike, the Underground Secrets of Paklenica is the easiest addition.

What to Bring Hiking in Paklenica National Park

Even though this isn't an especially long mountain hike, Paklenica's terrain can be rocky and exposed in places.

Bring sturdy trail shoes, plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat and snacks or lunch for the Mountain Hut. Trekking poles can also be helpful, particularly for the descent through the steeper lower canyon, which has loose gravel and can be slippery. And don't forget your camera. Between the enormous canyon walls, climbers overhead, butterflies and hummingbird moths along the trail, there is plenty to photograph.

Where to Stay for Your Paklenica National Park Visit?

If you're following our itinerary, you don't necessarily need to stay near Paklenica. The park makes an excellent half-day stop en route from Plitvice to Zadar, Trogir or Split, allowing you to hike Velika Paklenica Canyon before continuing to the coast.

If you'd rather slow down and spend a night or two exploring the park, Starigrad-Paklenica is our top choice. This small coastal town sits at the foot of the Velebit Mountains, close to the Velika Paklenica entrance, with beaches and restaurants for a relaxing evening after your hike. A few options to consider:

• Rajna: A small, family-run hotel in Starigrad that's particularly convenient for hikers and climbers visiting Paklenica.
• Hotel Vicko: Beachfront, 3-star hotel with comfortable rooms, garden, coffee shop, and bar.
• Apartments Paklenica: A great self-catering choice very close to the entrance to Velika Paklenica Canyon.
• Paklenica Mountain Hut: for those who would like to explore further into the park (this is the turnaround point for our suggested hike).

Is Paklenica National Park Worth Visiting for Half a Day?

Absolutely—especially if you enjoy hiking in one of Croatia's most dramatic mountain landscapes. Within the space of a single travel day, you can leave the waterfall-filled forests around Plitvice, hike beneath towering limestone cliffs in the Velebit Mountains, and finish your day beside the Adriatic.

If you have four or five hours available, hike the Velika Paklenica Canyon to the Paklenica Mountain Hut. If you have less time, hike as far into Velika Paklenica Canyon as you'd like, turn around, and continue toward the coast.

Either way, Paklenica National Park hiking is a much more memorable way to break up the drive from Plitvice to Trogir or Split than simply watching the mountains pass by through the car window.
