If you only have one day in Freiburg im Breisgau, you’re in for a treat. This vibrant university city combines medieval streets, lively cafés, mountain views, and easy access to nature—all within walking distance. Rather than trying to squeeze in every museum, spend your day experiencing what makes Freiburg so special: wandering its picturesque Old Town, hiking up the Schlossberg for panoramic views, and slowing down enough to enjoy its café culture.
While you can explore many of Freiburg’s highlights in one day, we highly recommend using Freiburg as a base for a 5-7 day slow travel itinerary.

Getting Around in Freiburg im Breisgau
Freiburg is one of Germany’s most walkable cities. This itinerary covers approximately 8–12 km (5–7.5 miles) on foot, depending on whether you hike the Schlossberg or take the funicular. The city’s excellent tram network also makes it easy to shorten the walk or return to your accommodation at the end of the day.
Morning: Breakfast & Discover Freiburg’s Old Town
Start your morning at SAMS Café on Münsterplatz, one of Freiburg’s best cafés for fresh pastries, hearty breakfasts, and excellent coffee. Sitting outside, you’ll enjoy wonderful views of Freiburg Minster while watching the city gradually come to life.

From here, spend the next couple of hours exploring Freiburg’s remarkably preserved Old Town. Your walking route naturally takes you past many of the city’s highlights:
- Freiburg Münster (Cathedral)
- Münsterplatz
- Historic Merchants’ Hall (Historisches Kaufhaus)
- The colorful Bächle canals
- Konviktstraße, one of Freiburg’s prettiest streets
- Schwabentor (tower)
- Martinstor (tower)
- Rathausplatz and the Old and New Town Halls
Don’t worry too much about sticking to a strict route—the beauty of Freiburg lies in wandering its narrow cobblestone lanes, discovering hidden courtyards, and stopping whenever something catches your eye.
Exploring old town with a 2-hour guided walking tour can enhance this morning’s experience. Freiburg has over 900 years of history, and local guides bring its medieval gates, hidden courtyards, Bächle waterways, and fascinating stories to life in a way that’s difficult to appreciate on your own. This will still leave you plenty of time for the mid-day and afternoon activities.
Tip: If you visit on a Saturday morning, don’t miss the lively farmers’market surrounding Freiburg Minster, one of the best in the Black Forest region.

Midday: Hike to Schlossberg
From Schwabentor, begin the walk up to Schlossberg. The climb is steady but relatively short, taking around 30–40 minutes depending on which trail you choose. Though it’s just a few steps from Freiburg’s old town, this is still one of our favorite places in the Black Forest in Autumn.
Follow the traditional Schlossberg loop (around 4.2 km), or customize your route as you go.
At the top you’ll be rewarded with some of the best views in southwest Germany. From the terraces and viewpoints you can look across Freiburg’s red rooftops toward the Black Forest, the Kaiserstuhl vineyards, and even France’s Vosges Mountains on clear days.
Schlossberg without the Hike
If you’d rather save your energy, you can ride the Schlossbergbahn funicular for most of the ascent before walking the remaining paths. There are flatter routes to walk from here, as well as additional climbs available.

If you’re up for a little more adventure, continue to the Schlossbergturm (Castle Hill Tower). This 35-meter (115-foot) observation tower offers arguably the finest panoramic views in the area, stretching across Freiburg, the Rhine Valley, the Black Forest, and, on exceptionally clear days, as far as the Swiss Alps. The open steel staircase and grated platforms can feel quite exposed, however, so it’s not the best choice if you’re afraid of heights or have mobility limitations. Even if you skip the tower, the surrounding viewpoints—including Kanonenplatz—still provide spectacular scenery.
Allow plenty of time to enjoy the views before heading to lunch.

Lunch with a View
For lunch, stop at Dattler, perched on the slopes of Schlossberg. The large terrace offers spectacular views over Freiburg while serving classic Baden specialties alongside lighter seasonal dishes. It’s the perfect place to relax after your hike before heading back into the city.

Afternoon Option 1: Climb Freiburg Münster Tower
After returning to the Old Town, climb the tower of Freiburg Minster.
The climb requires a fair number of stairs, but the reward is one of Germany’s finest Gothic church views. From the top you’ll gain a completely different perspective over the medieval city, with the Black Forest stretching into the distance.
If you’re interested in architecture, photography, or simply seeing Freiburg from another angle, this is well worth the effort.

Afternoon Option 2: Visit the Botanic Garden
If you’d prefer a quieter afternoon surrounded by nature, head instead to Freiburg’s Botanic Garden.
Operated by the University of Freiburg, the gardens showcase plants from around the world in both outdoor collections and greenhouses. It’s a peaceful escape after a busy morning and makes a wonderful alternative for anyone who has already climbed plenty of church towers during their travels. Entry is free of charge.

Evening: Dinner in the Old Town
Finish your day with dinner at Zum Schwabentörle, located just inside the historic Schwabentor. This traditional Baden restaurant serves regional favorites such as schnitzel, spätzle, seasonal specialties, and excellent local wines in a cozy historic setting.
If you’re celebrating a special occasion, Restaurant Löwengrube is another excellent choice, while the charming streets around Konviktstraße are perfect for an evening stroll after dinner.
If you have extra time, consider a stroll through the city’s gardens (Stadtgarten).

If You Have More Time
One day is enough to experience Freiburg's highlights, but if you can stay a little longer, there are plenty of worthwhile excursions nearby.
- Explore more of the Black Forest. Freiburg is one of the best bases for discovering the southern Black Forest by public transportation. Consider day trips to Schauinsland for hiking, Hinterzarten for forest walks, Titisee for lakeside fun, and Ravenna Gorge, famous for its dramatic viaduct and scenic hiking trails.
- Enjoy a road trip or bus ride along the Schwarzwaldhochstrasse (Black Forest High Road), for incredible views and hiking, especially in Autumn.
- Take an international day trip. Freiburg's location near both France and Switzerland makes it easy to visit Colmar, France, with its colorful half-timbered houses and canals, or Basel, home to world-class museums, a beautiful Rhine riverfront, and a vibrant Old Town.
- Slow down and enjoy Freiburg. If you prefer not to venture far, spend another afternoon cycling along the Dreisam River, relaxing in one of the city's many parks, exploring more of the Old Town's cafés and independent shops, or visiting whichever of the Minster tower or Botanic Garden you didn't have time for on your first day.
If you're planning a longer Black Forest itinerary, Freiburg makes an excellent base thanks to its walkable center, outstanding public transportation, and easy access to hiking trails, vineyards, lakes, and neighboring countries.
