Praia da Odeceixe (Where the River Meets the Ocean Beach)
The highlight of Odeceixe Portugal is without question Praia de Odeceixe—one of the most unique beaches in the country.
On one side, you have the Atlantic Ocean with waves perfect for surfing (and plenty of surf lessons going on). On the other, a calm river lagoon winds inland, creating a natural swimming area ideal for families or anyone looking for a more relaxed dip.
What Makes It Special:
- You can switch between ocean and river in minutes
- Warmer, calmer water on the river side
- Dramatic cliffs and wide sandy stretches
- Take long walks or hikes on the headland just south of the beach
Pro Tip: Head up the cliffs at sunset for one of the best views on the coast
Try Surfing or Paddleboarding
If you’re looking for active things to do in Odeceixe Portugal, getting on the water is a must.
- Surfing: Best on the ocean side
- Paddleboarding/Kayaking: Perfect on the calm river
It’s an ideal setup for both beginners and experienced surfers.
Hike the Fisherman’s Trail
Odeceixe makes a wonderful place to stop on the Fisherman’s Trail, making it a perfect place to stay for hiking.
Plan to hike the classic or full Fisherman’s Trail. Or, just pick a few sections near Odeceixe:
- Zambujeira do Mar → Odeceixe (19 km wild cliffs + remote beaches, moderately challenging)
- Odeceixe Circular Loop: this 15 km loop has stunning cliffside views and rolling farmland
- Odeceixe → Aljezur (18 km rolling coastal terrain + quiet stretches)
Even a short out-and-back walk delivers incredible views. You don’t need to complete entire sections of the trail to enjoy this experience.
Pro Tip: The trail from Zambujeira do Mar comes down on the opposite side the river from the beach (see the photo above). It’s an almost 5 km walk from there to cross the bridge, and return on the other side of the river to the beach. Plan to cool off in the water before walking this last stretch.
Don’t forget to bring along a day pack for hiking, a filtered water bottle, a First aid kit, and trail walking shoes!
Wander the Village of Odeceixe
The village itself is small but full of charm and history, dating back to the Moorish times. The steep hillside is blanketed in whitewashed houses with red tile roofs. Wander through town, following the narrow, cobblestone streets up to a windmill with sweeping views over the valley.
Don’t miss:
- Igreja Matriz de Odeceixe – the village church, simple but peaceful, and a nice cultural stop
- The hilltop windmill offers panoramic views. Visiting hours are limited (check the city hall website for latest hours) Even if the windmill isn’t open for a visit, the views outside are beautiful, and worth the walk up.
- Museu Adega de Odeceixe – a small former wine cellar museum (with free visits)
This is the perfect town to slow down, wander quiet streets, stop at a café and soak in the atmosphere.
Personal Tip: Hidden amongst these winding streets are a few steep staircases that you’ll find the locals using. If you’d like to quickly get back to town from the windmill, these are your best bet (a bit slippery after a rain).
Explore Nearby Beaches and Cliffs
Beyond Odeceixe, this stretch of coastline is packed with wild, uncrowded beaches. Biking, hiking, or even driving from Odeceixe to the neighboring beaches is a wonderful way to spend the day.
Nearby highlights:
- Praia da Amoreira – another beautiful river + ocean combo
- Monte Clerigio - stunning ocean beach, just a few minutes south of Amoreira (and a great place to stop for lunch)
- Praia de Carriagem – rugged and peaceful, near Rogil
- Praia das Adegas - Naturismo - Just south of Praia da Odeceixe, you'll find Adegas, one of 6 official nude beaches in Portugal
Take a Day Trip to Zambujeira do Mar
Just 20 minutes north by car or bus, Zambujeira do Mar makes an easy and worthwhile day trip.
Why go:
- Dramatic cliffside viewpoints
- Beautiful beaches tucked below the village
- A slightly livelier feel (especially in summer)
It’s also a key stop along the Fisherman’s Trail.
Take a Day Trip to Aljezur
Drive or take a bus south about 15 minutes, you’ll reach Aljezur, a larger town with more history and amenities.
Highlights:
- The hilltop castle ruins with sweeping views (free to enter and wander around the grounds)
- A charming old town with traditional houses
- The town's market (mercado) was filled with fresh produce, meats, cheese, and fish
- Art galleries and shops
- Wide variety of restaurants and cafés
- Easy access to beaches like Praia da Amoreira (by car)
Enjoy the Local Food Scene
Food in Odeceixe is simple, local, and delicious—especially seafood. Don't miss the octopus, seafood stew (cataplana), and fresh, grilled fish.
Where to eat in town:
- Casa Verde: a great spot for your pastel del nata and coffee, or a meal of local dishes
- Ao Largo Odeceixe: casual spot with great breakfasts, burgers, and local foods
Where to Eat at the Beach:
We enjoyed these spots with views over the river (perfect after hiking the Odeceixe Circular Loop (one section of the Fisherman's Trail).

Where to Stay in Odeceixe, Portugal
When deciding where to stay in Odeceixe Portugal, it really comes down to whether you prefer staying in the village or near the beach—both offer very different experiences. Despite my love for the ocean, the charm of this old town won me over. I enjoyed staying in old town at SulSeixe, where I could cook and access to the many restaurants and cafés nearby. You can also easily walk to the buses to Aljezur or beyond from town.

| Moderate in town: SulSeixe Guesthouse | This charming guesthouse offers well-decorated rooms and apartments with unique touches and excellent hospitality. I enjoyed staying here, right next door to the church, and midway up the hill. |
| Moderate at the beach: Casa Dorita | Seaview and beachfront guesthouse, some with kitchenettes, with access to the property's restaurant on property. |
| Moderate+ in town: Casas do Moinho – Turismo de Aldeia | These traditional village cottages near the town's windmill offer cozy, well-furnished rooms with a homey feel and beautiful views. |
| Moderate+ in town: stressfree charm house | Set in the heart of Odeceixe, you'll find clean and renovated rooms, some with terrace overlooking the streets of Odeceixe. |

How to Get to Odeceixe

Getting Between Odeceixe Village and the Beach
One of the unique aspects of Odeceixe Portugal is that the village and beach are separate.
- Distance: ~3 km (5-10 minutes by car)
- Driving: The easiest option, with parking near the beach. There are a few taxi services in town, such as Taxi Novais and Rogerin Taxi if you don't have a car. You'll want to arrange taxis in advance to ensure availability.
- Walking: A scenic 40–50 minute walk following the road or parts of the trail (there isn't much of a shoulder on the road)
- Cycling: A great option if you have a bike or e-bike
If you’re staying in town, it’s easy to split your day—mornings in the village, afternoons at the beach, or vice versa.
