Embarking on a bike tour is one of the most immersive ways to explore the stunning landscapes of Tenerife, in Spain’s Canary Islands. Many visitors focus on hiking or relaxing at the beaches and natural pools. Tenerife is also known for its road biking, especially the incredible hill climbs. We needed a day off from hiking, and biking sounded like a great activity. Given that we were trying to give our legs a break from the steep hikes, a challenging road bike tour didn’t interest us. We decided to try the Biking Adventure Tour from Teide to Sea with Wine and Cheese Tasting.

Tour Start in Los Cristianos
Our journey began at Xplore Tenerife Kayaking and Biking’s shop in Los Cristianos. We drove down from Los Gigantes and easily found easy free parking about one block from the shop. Arriving 15 minutes early, we were warmly greeted and quickly fitted with our bikes, helmets, and gloves. Convenient amenities like lockers and bathrooms ensured we were all set for the day. A quick note: if you forget your water bottle, make sure to grab some water next door at the grocery store. You won’t find any water stops on the trail.
Our anticipation grew as we loaded up into the van with our driver and our exceptional tour leader, Javi. We enjoyed an air-conditioned 40-minute drive to the starting point, a scenic picnic area perched at 2200 meters. Here, amidst the cool mountain air, we had a moment to test our bikes and make any necessary adjustments before embarking on our journey downhill in a disciplined single file line.
Teide to Vilaflor
The roads, paved and well-maintained, wound through breathtaking landscapes. Despite sharing the road with cars and the occasional speedy road biker, the journey was smooth, thanks to the high-quality bikes and their reliable brakes. Our first stop granted us expansive views over Tenerife and the neighboring island of La Gomera. Javi’s insights into the area, as well as biking tips for those who needed them, were invaluable.
The journey continued to awe us with the majestic Pino Gordo at our second stop—an 800-year-old Canarian pine tree standing tall with a 9.8-meter diameter and a towering height of 45 meters. The Canarian pine tree (Pinus canariensis) is one of the most fire resistant in the world.
Following this, we ventured into Vilaflor, Tenerife’s highest town at 1400 meters, to admire a 500-year-old church built by the first European settlers.
Vilaflor to the Winery
The adventure took a charming turn as we navigated narrower and steeper roads, leading us through the town of Vilaflor and onto a brief gravel road towards the Bodega Reverón vineyards. Though it was a bit bumpy, it didn’t require any technical bike handling skills.
Wine and Cheese Tasting
We arrived at the ecological Bodega Reverón winery, and enjoyed a tour, followed by a nice break on the shady patio. We indulged in a delightful wine and cheese tasting, relaxing and having a chance to get to know our guide and the other bikers. In our case, our small group was a mix of Romanians and Swiss, in addition to ourselves.
After enjoying our tasting, we visited the gift shop, having the option to bring home wine, cheese, and other assorted gift items. Javi’s thoughtful offer to carry any purchases in his bag was a testament to the personalized care that made the tour special.
The Road Back to Los Cristianos
Although the road steepened and narrowed, our group managed without too much difficulty. I’ve read reviews mentioning that some people got off and walked their bikes on the steepest stretches. The final downhill stretch is on a bigger road with a gentle decline. I appreciated the bike lane, with cars respectfully keeping their distance. I would not have been comfortable with young kids on this stretch due to the number of cars. We then wound our way through Los Cristianos, leading us back to Xplore’s shop.
While some of our fellow adventurers opted for kayaking with Xplore the next day, our plans for hiking awaited us. Both the biking and the wine and cheese tasting were truly enjoyable, and gave us the break we needed to head out on more challenging hikes the next day.
Would I recommend this tour? Absolutely, though with a few comments. This tour involves spending 2.5-3 hours on a bike cruising downhill. It is not a hard ride physically in terms of effort, since it is downhill. However, you need to be comfortable navigating through tight turns while cruising along fairly quickly. And you need to be comfortable staying on a bike for that long.
There were also a few e-bike tours that looked like fun, but we couldn’t do them all this trip:

[…] Biking: Tenerife is known for its road biking, with epic climbs in the hills of Tenerife. We also enjoyed a more leisurely bike tour, which we reviewed here; […]
What a gorgeous part of the world – not sure I could bike it like you – I’ll have to get my fitness up to be able to get some of those hills!
This was almost all downhill, but there are plenty of other ways to explore this area!
Not sure my riding would be great at the end of this tour but it looks like so much fun! Love the old church in Vilaflor. Great you get history as well as wine.
I think there are tours with just the wine tasting and exploring Teide National Park as well that could be fun.
my cycling skills would need some serious revisiting but my goodness how fun does this look! love how you have taken your time to travel and savor every moment. i need to do more of that!
Thanks, hope you’re able to give it a try sometime!
I love to see a country on bike or foot. You noticed so many more things when you travel slow.
I agree, walking/hiking and biking are some of my favorite ways to travel.
This sounds like a fun way to explore Tenerife. I would need to brush up on my biking first though 🙂
Thanks!
Fabulous. Tenerife has been on our list for awhile but we haven’t made it there yet. Cycling like this would be a great way to see the island. I also saved your hiking post about the island. I definitely would enjoy that too. Great advice.
Thank you! We did our recent Tenerife visit in January, and it was a memorable getaway.
I like the idea of exploring a new spot by bike. But the hills of Tenerife might have dissuaded me from trying it there. But I must admit to be tempted by a tour that offered wine and cheese tasting! Good to know there are some bike lanes in spots.
I think you can also just opt for a wine tour at Bodega Reverón too!
