The Lizard United Kingdom is one of the most spectacular and unspoiled corners of Cornwall — and after visiting, we understand why it’s often described as the county’s wildest peninsula. While many travelers head straight to Land’s End, the Lizard Peninsula feels quieter, more rugged, and deeply connected to the Atlantic. Walking stretches of the South West Coast Path, we found dramatic cliffs, turquoise coves, and a sense of space that’s increasingly rare in popular UK destinations. At the southern edge of the Lizard United Kingdom lies Lizard Point, the southernmost tip of mainland Britain. Here, shifting light, wind, and sea create a landscape that feels powerful, wild, and peaceful. If you’re wondering whether the Lizard United Kingdom is worth visiting, this guide will help you decide — and show you how to experience it at its best.

Is Lizard Point Worth Visiting?
The short answer: yes—Lizard Point and the entire Lizard Peninsula is absolutely worth visiting. Lizard Point is less about attractions and entertainment and more about atmosphere. We contrast Lizard Point with Land’s End, a bit further West. Both coastlines are stunning, though it’s hard to find a quiet place to enjoy those views at Land’s End. Standing on the cliffs of Lizard Point, on the other hand, watching waves crash far below, you truly feel at the edge of the country. Walk 10-15 minutes east of Lizard Point towards the lighthouse and Bass Point to enjoy a quiet (and beautiful) view of the coast.
Why Lizard Point Is Worth It
- Uninterrupted sea views of both the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel
- Rugged cliffs unlike anywhere else in Cornwall
- Excellent coastal walking in both directions
- A sense of raw, elemental Britain you don’t get at busier landmarks

Top Things to Do in the Lizard United Kingdom
1. Walk the South West Coast Path (Point-to-Point)
One of the main reasons I selected the Penzance to Coverack stretch of the South West Coast Path was the stunning Lizard Peninsula, which offers some of the wildest and best coastal walking in the UK.
Suggested point-to-point walks:
- Lizard Point to Kynance Cove – (2.1 miles / 3.4 km) easy-moderate walk. Spectacular clifftop views and turquoise water.
- Kynance Cove to Mullion Cove – (4.2 miles / 6.8 km) moderate walk. One of England’s most scenic stretches of coastline–keep an eye out for seals, goats, and beautiful views.
- Lizard Point to Cadgwith – (3 miles / 4.9 km) moderate walk. Wild headlands pass by the lifeboat station, Church cove, the Devil’s Frying Pan, and end at the traditional fishing village of Cadgwith. The paths on this stretch are narrower and more overgrown than on the stretches between Kynance Cove and Mullion Cove.

2. Circular Walks on the Lizard Peninsula
If you prefer loops over linear walks, the Lizard United Kingdom delivers here too. If you are driving to the Lizard Peninsula, the National Trust operates car parks at Lizard Point and at Kynance Cove (free for National Trust members). The car park at Lizard Point is larger and can be used as a base for all of these circular walks.
The top circular walks are:
- Lizard, Kynance Cove and Church Cove Circular (6.2 miles/10 km), a moderate hike with spectacular views over the coast. This is the classic circular hike on the peninsula, passing by the highlights of Kynance Cove, Lizard Point, and Church Cove. This can be broken down into 2 days of circular walks (completing the Lizard Point Circular and Church Cove Circular listed just below).
- Lizard Point Circular Walk – Easy, dramatic, and perfect 3.3 mile (5.3 km) loop for a shorter and easier visit.

- Kynance Cove Circular Walk – Beach, cliffs, and inland paths (4.8 miles/7.7 km). Be sure to leave time to relax or grab a bite to eat in Kynance Cove.

- Church Cove Loop – (3.8 miles / 6.1 km) moderate walk. Head east from Lizard Point to enjoy this quieter, wilder, and pastoral walk. Combine this with a visit to the beach in Church Cove for a relaxed day on the Lizard Peninsula.
3. Visit Kynance Cove
Kynance Cove is often called one of the most beautiful beaches in England—and it’s easy to see why. Enjoy a coffee or lunch at the Kynance Cove Café, or do what I did and bring along a picnic lunch to enjoy on the grassy areas overlooking the cove. From here, enjoy the:
- White sand and turquoise water,
- Serpentine rock formations unique to the Lizard Peninsula,
- Excellent photography, especially at low tide.
The National Trust operates the Kynance Cove Car Park (free for National Trust members, paid for others). Plan to arrive early, as it fills up fairly quickly, especially in summer.
Pro Tip: Access involves steep steps—check tide times and wear sturdy footwear. You can enjoy the views from above without descending to the cove itself.

4. Explore Fishing Villages and Hidden Coves
Walking the South West Coast Path around the Lizard Peninsula is the best way to explore the many hidden coves and fishing villages. A few highlights we’d recommend visiting are:
- Cadgwith – Colorful boats, quaint village, thatched cottages. Just west of town, enjoy the views of the Devil’s Frying Pan and views back towards the lifeboat station in Church Cove.

- Church Cove – Sheltered, peaceful, and great for swimming. Don’t miss the Lizard Lifeboat Station and St. Winwaloe Church, half buried in the dunes.

- Mullion Cove – Dramatic cliffs, coastal paths, and a traditional fishing harbor.

- Bass Point – Marconi Wireless Station, Lloyd’s Station house.

5. Wildlife Spotting and Nature
The Lizard Peninsula is a biodiversity hotspot. Depending on the time of year, you may spot:
- Seabirds nesting along cliffs,
- Seals offshore,
- Rare wildflowers in spring and early summer.

Where Is Lizard Point in Cornwall?
Lizard Point is the southernmost point of mainland Britain and sits at the southern tip of the Lizard Peninsula in Western Cornwall.
How to Get to the Lizard Peninsula
We'd argue that Cornwall is worth visiting, despite the long travel times to get here from London.
| By Car | The drive to Lizard Point averages 25 minutes from Helston, 50 minutes from Penzance. Park in the public car parks in the center of town. We recommend (and personally) use DiscoverCars.com to compare and reserve rental cars in the UK. |
| By Public Transport | Take a train to Penzance or Redruth, then a bus toward Lizard village (may be via Helston). |
| By Plane | Newquay airport, the closest major airport, is about a 1 hour 15 minute drive to Lizard Point. |
| On Foot | Many walkers reach Lizard Point as part of a South West Coast Path itinerary |
Pro Tip: Parking is available near Lizard Point, but the lot fills up during the high summer season. Plan to arrive early or later in the day.

Where to Stay on the Lizard Peninsula United Kingdom
| Housel Bay Hotel | Boutique Hotel | The hotel sits right off the South West Coast Path, making this a perfect stopover for hikers. This stylish hotel enjoys stunning Atlantic views. |

| Sea View Glamping Barrel | Glamping | Unique glamping barrels complete with kitchenettes and barbecues. |
Pro Tip: Book early for summer—options are limited and highly sought after.

Best Places to Eat on the Lizard Peninsula United Kingdom

This makes me want to head straight to Cornwall. I love how you describe the Lizard Peninsula as wild, raw, and quieter than Land’s End — that alone makes it appealing. The point-to-point and circular walk breakdown is super helpful for planning. Kynance Cove and those cliff views look absolutely stunning. This feels like the perfect guide for anyone wanting dramatic coastal scenery without the heavy crowds.
It is a wonderful location for those wanting wild coastal scenery without so many tourists as you mention.
Although I’ve been to several cities in England, I hadn’t heard of the Lizard Peninsula. I enjoyed learning about this area.

If you didn’t know, I love cows so thanks for the cow photo which is reason enough for me to go here! This sounds absolutely glorious. This seems an ideal place to spend a week!
I’ll have to add a few more cow photos to the post! I passed numerous herds of cows along the way when hiking from Mullion around the Lizard Peninsula.
I have dreamed for so long to visit Cornwall. But the visit always gets postponed due to competing desires. I really want to walk part of the Southwest path. These circular routes you suggest at this locale seem doable! Great pics.
The circular routes are a great way to enjoy the coastal walks with committing to point to point hikes.
My family have been visiting this area for nearly 30 years, in fact we always stay in Mullion, so I absolutely love it here. The walks, the views at the edge of the cliffs, and just chilling watching the waves in Mullion harbour. I’d recommend visiting Trenance Chocolates in Mullion – they make their own chocolate and it’s fantastic – we always have a stash at home.
Thank you for the tip on Trenance Chocolates, we’ll try them on our next visit.
I love all of your blogposts about Cornwall, you make me wanna go this summer!
