Why Visit Europe for a Thanksgiving Holiday?
U.,S.. Thanksgiving, along with November as a whole, is an excellent time to visit Europe for several reasons, including:
- It’s off-peak travel season in many locations;
- There are fewer crowds and shorter lines at major tourist attractions;
- Airfare and hotel rates typically drop, making it more budget friendly;
- Though the weather is cooler than in summer, it’s typically warmer than during winter months; note that some areas have more rain (see descriptions of each location for details);
- Holiday and Christmas markets start opening mid-late November, depending on the location, making for a fun start to your holiday season.
- For those looking for a change of pace for Thanksgiving, Europe makes a great choice. Try new foods for your holiday meal, or spend your holiday in Rome, London, or Paris, where you can find traditional Thanksgiving dinners offered (more details in these sections below).
- Many people have to take less PTO (paid time off) to enjoy a Thanksgiving week in Europe due to the 2 holiday days.
Finding Great Flight Deals for your November Getaway
Finding great flight deals requires some strategy and flexibility.
- Start searching for flights early.
- If you haven’t decided where to go, consider using Skyscanner’s Fly Anywhere tool. Enter your dates to see flight deals to a variety of destinations. See what inspires you.
- Use flight comparison tools like Skyscanner and Google Flights, setting up price alerts.
- Be flexible with your airports, including nearby airports in your search.
- Being flexible with your travel dates can also yield lower prices. Check mid-week pricing vs weekends. If traveling on a holiday (such as U.S. Thanksgiving in November), look at flights on the holiday itself, avoiding peak travel days.
- Additionally, sign up for airline newsletters and follow airlines on social media to access flash sales or exclusive discounts that are not widely advertised.
What are the Best Places to Visit in Europe in November (Thanksgiving)?
1. Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon has become one of the hot spots to visit in Europe, leading to overcrowding in many popular areas. One way to help alleviate this situation is to visit during the off-season, such as in November. A visit in November allows you to explore the city without the crowds. Wander through the historic streets of Alfama, taste the local cuisine featuring delectable seafood, and enjoy a sunset view from São Jorge Castle. Head off the beaten path in Lisbon, taking a tile making workshop or cooking class, or taking a bike ride along the waterfront to Belém.
The weather in November is cooler, with average high temperatures in the mid 60’s F (17-18°C). It does rain an average of 8-12 days in November. While it’s not swimming weather, bring a jacket, umbrella, and some warm clothes to enjoy exploring the seaside and the attractions in and around Lisbon.
Kick-off your holidays by visiting one of Lisbon’s many Christmas markets. Dates for the 2024 markets are not all published yet, though they typically start in mid-late November. Some of the Christmas markets and villages in and around Lisbon to visit are:
2. Madeira, Portugal
Madeira, while part of Portugal, sits closer to the coast of Africa. With its warm temperatures, it is a great place to escape the cold of winter and an easy flight from the UK or mainland Europe. The island boasts lush landscapes, spectacular cliffs, and gardens that bloom even in late autumn. Hike the Levadas (irrigation channels) for breathtaking views, or relax in natural swimming pools formed by volcanic rocks. The mild weather here makes outdoor activities enjoyable all year round.
November is a wonderful time to visit Madeira. The weather in November is warmer than in much of mainland Europe, with high temperatures around 70°F (21°C). It does get cooler in the evenings, so be sure to bring a jacket. While Madeira averages 9-10 days of rain in November, it is often short lived, with sun following shortly after. When one side of the island is rainy, the other side may be sunny.
Staying in the city of Funchal is recommended during November. It sits on the sunnier south side of the island, and you’ll have easy access to many restaurants and activities. Don’t miss having high tea at Reid’s Palace, though you’ll need to reserve this as far in advance as possible. Enjoy the Chestnut Festival and the Madeira Street Art Festival in the 1st weeks of November. If you are able to stay a few days into December, the Madeira Christmas Market in Funchal opens December 1st, 2024. This is a great way to kick off your holiday season.
3. Tenerife, Canary Islands
Escape to eternal spring on the island of Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands. Similar to Madeira, Tenerife lies closer to Africa than to continental Europe. Whether you’re lounging on the beaches, strolling through quaint towns like San Cristóbal de La Laguna, or hiking in the dramatic landscapes of Teide National Park, Tenerife offers a diverse November escape. Enjoy an epic active itinerary for your week in Tenerife!
High temperatures in Tenerife in November average in the mid 70’s F (around 24°C) by the coast. Keep in mind that it is quite a bit cooler at higher elevations. The island averages 4 days of rain in November, but the remaining days are typically sunny. It’s definitely possible to sun bathe in November and some find it warm enough to swim. We’ve even enjoyed swimming in the natural pools in Los Gigantes in the heart of winter.
Don’t miss the San Andrés Festivals in Tenerife on November 29th, which kick off the new wine season (in Icod de los Vinos and Puerto de la Cruz). Read more on the many areas to stay in Tenerife to help you decide which part of the island to stay for your November vacation.
4. Rome, Italy
Rome in the off season is magical, with its historic sites like the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Vatican City much less crowded than during high season. Out of this list of our top November destinations, our November (Thanksgiving) trip to Rome ranked #1 for our whole family. Exploring the sites without the crowds is an incredible experience. Enjoy visiting the top instagram-worthy places in Rome often without waiting in a long line to get a photo. The crisp air and golden light enhance the city’s timeless beauty, perfect for reflective and leisurely exploration.
High temperatures in Rome average in the mid-60’s F (17-18°C), with temperatures a bit cooler in the evenings. Bring along a rain jacket and umbrella in case you’re there during one of the 9 average rainy days in November.
If you are visiting during U.S. Thanksgiving, enjoy hearty Italian meals as a twist on the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, with dishes like pasta carbonara and ossobuco. Or, visit the L’Uliveto restaurant, which offers a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, at the Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria. This is also a great place to stay for your visit in Rome.
5. Tuscany, Italy
Imagine spending November among the rolling hills and vineyards of Tuscany. Enjoy a peaceful retreat in Tuscany, famed for its art, history, and gastronomy. Visit Florence to see Renaissance art, explore medieval towns like Siena, and indulge in a Tuscan feast with local wines.
The weather in Tuscany is a bit cooler than in Rome, with high temperatures averaging 60°F (16°C). There can be a decent amount of rain, though this will depend on the year. Dress appropriately and head out to enjoy your adventures.
Some of the Christmas markets in Tuscany begin to open in later November. Don’t miss:
- Piazza Grande in Arezzo
- Heidelberger Weihnachtsmarkt in Florence
- Natale a Montepulciano
We stayed in San Gimignano for our November visit, with day trips to the larger cities. While this was a perfect choice for us, many prefer staying in a larger city such as Florence, taking day trips from there to explore the smaller hilltop towns.
6. Sicily, Italy
Sicily provides a warm Mediterranean getaway including rich history, culture, and architecture. Visit ancient Greek ruins in Agrigento, explore the bustling markets of Palermo, and enjoy the island’s diverse culinary offerings. The mild weather is perfect for an adventurous November holiday, though it will likely be too chilly for swimming. If you just have one week, we recommend flying into Palermo and exploring Western Sicily or flying into Catania to explore Eastern Sicily. Trying to see the whole island in one week requires more travel time than quality time spent enjoying the sites.
Average high temperatures in Sicily in November range from 59-66°F (15-19°C). You’ll find warmer temperatures along the coast, with cooler temperatures in the mountains. It can be rainy in November, but this is mixed with sunny days. Dress appropriately to enjoy visiting the many attractions without the crowds.
When picking a place to stay, be sure that it gets good reviews for its heating in winter. Buildings are not always well insulated in Sicily, which can lead to chilly evenings. There are many hotels with great heating, just check this carefully before booking.
7. Crete, Greece
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and a fantastic spot for those who want to combine historical exploration with beach relaxation. Discover Minoan palaces, like the famous Knossos, and enjoy long walks along the island’s extensive beaches. Watch or take part in the annual olive harvest, which typically runs from the end of October through mid-January. November is a great time to watch and learn about the Raki distilling process.
Temperatures are mild in November, perfect for exploring the island. High temperatures average in the high 60’s F (around 20°C). There are 6-8 days of rainfall on average, though many of these are smaller showers. The water may be a bit chilly for many people, though you will see hardy souls enjoying the water.
Many of the tourist resorts close during the off season, though you’ll find that the cities including Chania and Heraklion are open and vibrant year round. On November 11th, join in the celebration of Saint Minas in Heraklion. If you can add a few days in December, kick off your holiday season in Heraklion, which hosts a Christmas market usually starting on December 1st. It feels like the entire city is decorated, helping you get into the spirit of the holidays.
8. Split, Croatia
The ancient city of Split is a gem on the Adriatic coast. Explore the Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and enjoy the waterfront Riva promenade. Croatian cuisine, with its blend of Mediterranean and Slavic influences, is not to be missed, especially when paired with local wines. Don’t miss day trips to Krka National Park, Trogir, Brac, and Hvar during your stay. Some of the water activities have wrapped up for the season, though there are plenty of activities on land to enjoy.
Average high temperatures in Split in November are just under 60°F (15°C), with an average of 8 rainy days. Bring a rain jacket and head out to enjoy touring the many sites in Split.
Visiting the Christmas markets in Split is a unique experience. The market and stalls are spread amongst the squares around Diocletian’s Palace, with portions on the Riva promenade as well. The market typically kicks off right at the beginning of December, making this a great way to end to end your vacation and start the holidays.
9. London, England
Experience a vibrant November in London, where the holiday season is kicking into full gear. Explore famous landmarks like the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace, and don’t miss the stunning Christmas lights and decorations starting to adorn the city.
High temperatures in London in November average just 53°F (12°C). London averages 10 days of rain (or 20 days without rain looking positively). Bring a rain coat and umbrella along with warmer clothes. There are plenty of indoor historical sites, museums, shopping, and shows to enjoy during cold and rainy days.
Some of the best London Christmas markets that usually open in later November include:
- Southbank Centre Winter Market
- Covent Garden Christmas Markets
- Leicester Square Christmas Market
For those looking for a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner while in London, there are plenty of choices available. Our recommendation is to enjoy the traditional Thanksgiving dinner at the Brasserie Max at the Covent Garden Hotel.
10. Paris, France
Exploring Paris in November allows you to stroll along the Seine, visit world-renowned museums like the Louvre and Orsay, and enjoy the cozy cafes without the summertime crowds. The city’s elegance and charm are heightened by the festive atmosphere as it begins to dress up for the holidays.
High temperatures in Paris in November average 52°F (11°C). Paris averages 9 days of rain, so bring along a rain coat, umbrella, and warmer clothes. There is no shortage of indoor museums, shopping, historical sites, and shows for those cold and rainy days.
Paris Holiday Markets and Light Displays typically opening in late November include:
- La Défense Marché de Noel
- Marche Saint-Germain
- Jardin des Plantes Light Displays
- Disneyland Paris Christmas Market
There are plenty of traditional Thanksgiving dinner choices in Paris for those looking to celebrate the U.S. holiday late in the month. The Hôtel Vernet Champs Elysées Paris is a wonderful place to stay and serves Thanksgiving dinner under the Gustave Eiffel-designed glass dome.
Each of these places to visit offers a unique way to enjoy November in Europe, from beachside retreats and islands to historic city explorations. If you’ve explored all of these spots, there are always more warmer islands to explore in November, such as Malta, Cyprus, Mallorca, or Gran Canaria. I’m torn of where to choose but leaning towards Tenerife – that sounds like it might be warmish in November.
Tenerife would likely be the warmest, followed closely by Madeira.
[…] As an added benefit, traveling outside the peak summer months often means better deals, more personalized experiences, and a more relaxed atmosphere. Some of our favorite times to travel in Europe are April-May and September-November. Though the days get a bit shorter, the weather is often lovely for land-based explorations, and in some cases, even swimming. Do your research as some destinations get progressively more rainy (or snowy), while others retain their sunny days much longer. Winter shouldn’t be overlooked either. We’ve enjoyed wonderful winter visits to holiday markets, ski trips in the alps, and warm weather escapes including Tenerife and Madeira. Europe is much better in November when the weather is less brutal, its cheaper and there are far fewer crowds especially in the places you listed like Italy, Portugal and Greece. I’d like to explore Tenerife during fall, thanks for the tips.
Thanks!
All great destinations to visit in November just before the Christmas rush! We would particularly love to soak in the sun in Portugal.
That sounds great. As long as you’re prepared for a bit more rain, you can really enjoy your time without crowds in November.
what a great list! Now to choose!
That is the hard part!
Fantastic suggestions! I love fall travel, especially to hot places and those that are extra crowded in the summer. In fact, it was one of my favorite things about homeschooling. I love your recommendations.
Thanks for the feedback!
Some great spots here! We literally just had our flights to Portugal cancelled last week while we were en route, so I’m feeling super sad looking at Lisbon on this post. Perhaps November is a better time to rebook that trip.
Sorry your flight got cancelled, hope you can get it rescheduled. We’ve never had issues traveling to Lisbon, though there is a strike planned this week. Not sure if that impacted your flight.
I love traveling in the off season to avoid the crowds, so Oct/Nov is a common time for me to travel. Got some new travel ideas from this list. I wouldn’t have expected Lisbon so now I have the thinking cap on for 2025! Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for the feedback. My feeling is that Lisbon is great as long as you’re ok with some rainy days and no swimming (unless you have a wetsuit).
So many amazing locations and some still to visit. Tuscany is so beautiful but Croatia is definitely high on my list. Thanks for the little push along to look at visiting next year.
Hope you enjoy Croatia–we’ve loved our visits there.
Europe is great in November with its mild weather and fewer crowds. I would love to visit Crete at this time and enjoy the long walks and beautiful sunsets.
I prefer Crete this time of year to the heat of the summer and even early fall. It’s wonderful for long walks.
You mentioned some of my favourite autumn destinations. Yes to visiting Lisbon when the weather is more manageable and there are fewer tourists. Both London and Paris can be a bit wetter in November, but as you mentioned, there are so many museums, galleries, and other places to explore that the rain will not be an issue.
Thanks for the feedback!
You have made a great list for November travel in Europe. My top favorite would be Madeira and also Rome. Big cities like are very crowded in summer months, so November is good time for visit.
I agree, it’s so much more relaxing to visit big cities in November, even if it means bundling up a bit.
Hi, thanks for the recommendations. Nice suggestions.
Thank you!
I totally agree with you, November is a wonderful time to visit Europe. I did a lot of my Europe travels this past December. Thanks for your list, it gives me ideas of other places I should visit this coming winter season.
Thanks. December can be a great month too, though it tends to get crowded around the holidays.
This is a great idea for a post, to encourage more people to travel off season. We have learned how rewarding it can be to visit Europe when it’s not so crowded. Love this and am saving for future planning.
Thanks for the feedback! We shifted almost completely to off season or at least shoulder season travel.
Love this, happy to know Lisbon in November is good to visit, heading there this year.
It’s a great time to visit to see the sites. Be prepared for some rainy days and bring good shoes, as the cobblestones can get slippery when it rains). There are plenty of indoor sites when those showers come through, and the rest of the time will be great for exploring outdoors.
I agree November is a great time to travel in Europe… it’s when us Europeans are thinking of the Christmas travel or tropical destinations… so the American Thanksgiving is normally low season in Europe. The only thing that’s a bit bothersome is that it can get dark very early at night.
That is very true about it getting dark earlier. I try to think of this as a good way to enjoy the holiday markets and decorated streets, but the days are shorter.
We love to travel in Europe in the Fall. But are often heading back home in November. Great to know that we can extend our stay at some great spots. Christmas markets have been on our list for some time. And we sure loved our first visit to Sicily. The Canary Islands are a great idea with such great weather.
Thanks for the feedback!
What a great list! I’ve been to a number of these places in early spring, which is probably a similar experience to November – fewer crowds, not hot. Traveling Europe in the shoulder season is such a great idea!
I think it’s quite a similar experience, though I’ve had some April visits seem a bit warmer.
[…] As the heat subsides, autumn makes for the perfect hiking weather in Madeira. The island’s famed Levadas (irrigation channels) offer unique walking paths through lush forests and alongside dramatic cliffs. The grape harvests in late-August to September bring about the lively Wine Festival, celebrating Madeira’s rich viniculture with tastings and traditional entertainment. The ocean is typically still warm enough for swimming. With fewer tourists and still warm days, autumn is a hidden gem for travelers. That is why we’ve included Madeira in our top 10 European destinations to visit in November. […]
[…] What about visiting in the off season though? We’ve included Sicily in our top 10 European destinations to visit in November. While it can be rainier and it is typically too cold to swim, there are plenty of indoor options […]
