Visiting the Coast of Croatia in Spring

Spring is one of the best times to visit the coast of Croatia for those who want to explore the outdoors and historic sights while avoiding the summer crowds. Weather in spring is mild, with high temperatures ranging from 15°C (59°F) in March to 24°C (75°F) in May. Rain is possible, especially early in the season, but sunny days become more frequent as spring goes on. We’ve spent weeks on Croatia’s coast and islands in spring, and have been lucky with very little rain. We’ve also had a few days mixed in with very windy or rainy weather, but we’ve always found plenty of indoor activities to enjoy on those days.

This is one of the least crowded times to visit the coast of Croatia, with the exception of Easter week. Cities along Croatia’s Coast, such as Dubrovnik and Split, are good destinations in Spring, since the majority of their restaurants and hotels stay open year-round.

Is it Worth Visiting Croatia’s Islands in Spring?

Many hotels and restaurants are closed on the Croatian islands until Easter weekend. There will typically be some restaurants and hotels open, but not too much selection. After Easter weekend, more and more restaurants open up for the season. The water is too cold for most people to enjoy swimming, but the hiking, biking, wine tours, and even kayaking and sailing can be wonderful. Be sure to search in advance to see which tours are available in the shoulder or off-seasons. Easter week is a fun time to be on historic islands such as Korčula. Don’t miss the Easter processions at St. Mark’s church in Korčula for a unique experience.

Visiting the Coast of Croatia in Summer

Beach lovers, sailors, and those looking for nightlife will enjoy visiting the coast of Croatia in summer. The waters are warm and perfect for swimming. The weather in summer tends to be hot and sunny, with high temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to 30°C (86°F).

Summer is one of the most crowded times to visit the coast of Croatia, particularly in July and August. It is not just foreign tourists who visit; many Croatians summer on the coast and islands. This also means that the roads from Zagreb down to the coast can be extremely congested around weekends. Plan for beaches to be extremely busy and lodging prices to be at a premium. Be sure to book all ferries and activities in advance to ensure availability.

Visiting the Coast of Croatia in Autumn

Autumn is one of the best times to visit Croatia’s coast and islands for outdoor adventurers, including hikers, bikers, sailors, as well as history lovers. Beach goers can often enjoy beach visits in September, with sea water still warm enough for swimming until later in the month. High temperatures in September average around 24°C (75°F), while October averages 18°C (64°F) and November 14°C (57°F). Rain does increase especially later in autumn.

September is an incredible time to visit. The crowds have thinned out but are still lively. Most restaurants and attractions are still open. By October and November, the coast becomes much calmer, with fewer tourists. Especially on the islands, expect an increasing number of restaurants and shops to be closed for the winter as the autumn progresses.

Coast of Croatia Autumn Activities

  • Wine harvest tours on the Pelješac Peninsula and in Istria. Be sure to contact wineries well in advance if you’d like to get involved in the harvest. Keep in mind that harvest dates may shift due to the weather. Otherwise, enjoy the plentiful wine tours and tastings across many of the coastal towns and islands.
  • Visiting historic sites like Diocletian’s Palace in Split and the city walls of Dubrovnik with fewer crowds.
  • Enjoying food festivals celebrating truffles, olive oil, honey, and seafood. Truffle hunting in Istria is a definite highlight!
  • Bike trips: the weather is ideal, and crowds lighter, making for wonderful bike touring conditions. Combine a bike and boat trip for the best of both worlds.
  • Hiking is also at its prime. The summer heat is wearing off, and the epic hikes (such as Sveti Ilija) and leisurely walking paths are at their peak.

Visiting the Coast of Croatia in Winter

Winter on Croatia’s coast and islands is not for everyone. The weather is mild, with temperatures between 8°C (46°F) and 14°C (57°F). Snow is rare, but rain is more common. This is the quietest season, making it ideal for travelers who are looking for a peaceful visit and the ability to explore incredible historical sites and ancient Roman ruins without the crowds. Can you enjoy outdoor activities in winter? Yes, though be sure to dress for colder weather and expect more rain or even snow than in other seasons.
