Top Nature & Cultural Highlights in Larnaca
1. Larnaca Salt Lake & Flamingo Watching
One of the most unforgettable things to do in Larnaca, Cyprus, is visiting the Salt Lake—a protected wetland where thousands of pink flamingos gather in Winter. When we visited in early December, we only saw a hundred or so flamingos. Visiting late-December to March gives you the best chance of seeing the flamingos. It’s the perfect spot for a walk on the lakeside paths, especially at sunrise or sunset for beautiful reflections and peaceful scenery. Even outside flamingo season, the lake is spectacular.
Off of the Salt Lake, Pattichio Forest Park offers shaded walking paths, birdlife, and picnic areas. Next door, the Pattihio Municipal Amphitheatre hosts concerts, plays, and cultural performances—worth checking for evening events during your visit.

2. Hala Sultan Tekke
Set along the Salt Lake, Hala Sultan Tekke is a serene, palm-lined spiritual landmark and one of the most important Islamic pilgrimage sites in the world. The mosque was built in the late 1800’s – early 1900’s. The lakeside setting and Ottoman architecture make this one of the most atmospheric things to do in Larnaca. The mosque itself is typically open daily and is free to enter. Please check the Hala Sultan Tekke website to confirm the latest hours and entry cost for your visit.
For archaeology lovers, don’t miss a stop at the site of Dromoloxia-Vyzakia, located near the Hala Sultan Tekke. This late Bronze Age harbor city reveals the remains of ancient settlements, industrial areas, and structures dating back centuries. It’s an insightful stop for visitors seeking historic things to do in Larnaca beyond the major sites.

3. Kamares Aqueduct (Καμάρες Δρομολαξιάς)
Built in 1747, the Kamares Aqueduct—often photographed as Kamares I & II—is one of Larnaca’s most beautiful landmarks. The long line of stone arches is especially stunning at sunset, making it a popular photography spot. It was interesting to see the houses, which were built in recent years surrounding the site. Despite the construction going on around the area, we truly enjoyed our visit to this quiet spot.

Ancient Sites & Museums
4. Archaeological Site of Kition
A must for history enthusiasts, Kition showcases ancient cyclopean stone walls, temples, and industrial copper-smelting areas. As one of Cyprus’s oldest settlements, it highlights Larnaca’s importance in ancient Mediterranean trade. The Mycenaean Achaeans were here from the 13th-11th centuries BC, while the Phoenicians inhabited the city during the 9th century BC. The Temple of Aphrodite-Astarte, built by the Phoenecians, is one of the highlights of a visit.
The entry fee is fairly minimum. Be aware though, Kition is not open on the weekends. We hadn’t noticed this and could only look in from the outside. But, this gives us a reason for a return visit!
Continue your historical journey with the Larnaca District Archaeological Museum, home to pottery, sculptures, tools, and artifacts dating from prehistory to the Roman period.
Pro Tip: If you plan to visit numerous sites in Larnaca, consider purchasing a special entry card from the Department of Antiquities, which has 1, 3, or 7 day entry cards.

Religious & Medieval Sites
5. Holy Church of Saint Lazarus and Museum
One of the most important Byzantine churches in Cyprus, the Holy Church of Saint Lazarus, built in the late 9th century, stands over the reputed tomb of Lazarus. Its stone arches, gold iconostasis, and small museum make it a top highlight among the best things to do in Larnaca.

For a deeper look at Cyprus’s religious heritage, visit the Byzantine Museum of Saint Lazarus, just next door. Its small collection of religious icons, vestments, manuscripts, and ecclesiastical artifacts makes it an easy addition while exploring Larnaca’s historic center.
We later saw the Greek Orthodox religious icons being made as a bonus stop on our Halloumi Tour from Paphos. Making Halloumi and visiting this icon maker (and monasteries and more) was an incredibly fun way to spend another of our days on Cyprus.

6. Larnaca Medieval Fort
Located at the end of the Finikoudes promenade, the Medieval Fort offers sea views, historic exhibits, and atmospheric stone architecture. Built during the reign of Lusignan King James I (1382 – 1398 AD), it’s a perfect stop for photography, enjoying a morning coffee, or sunset watching.

Enjoying Larnaca’s Beaches
7. Finikoudes Beach
Right along the main promenade, Finikoudes Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Larnaca. With calm water, sunbeds, cafés, and a lively beachfront, it’s ideal for swimming, families, and relaxed afternoon strolls. We had read reviews that Finikoudes Beach is not maintained as well as Mackensie Beach, but we didn’t experience this during the off season. The beach was clean and litter-free.

8. Mackenzie Beach
Known for its trendy beach bars, shallow waters, and golden sand, Mackenzie Beach is a favorite with both locals and visitors. It’s also one of the best places in Cyprus to watch planes landing—surprisingly fun and very close overhead.
We enjoyed visiting Kastella Beach as well, just east of Mackenzie Beach. It’s quite family friendly. Though services are more limited than at Mackenzie, there is a beach bar, restaurant, and beach chair rentals. While these beaches are beautiful during the day, they were also beautiful at night.

9. Pierides Museum – Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation
Located in a restored mansion, the Pierides Museum’s fascinating private collection includes ancient pottery, maps, medieval artifacts, and archaeological treasures.

10. Larnaca Marina and Boat Tours
The expanding Larnaca Marina is a stylish waterfront area perfect for seaside walks, dining, and photography. It’s especially beautiful in the evening.
While there, join a boat cruise from the marina to discover underwater life, snorkel, or enjoy panoramic coastal views—especially beautiful on clear days.

11. Zenobia Shipwreck Diving
For adventure seekers, diving the Zenobia, one of the world’s best shipwrecks, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There are also snorkeling tours in the Zenobia area.
12. Europe Square
Located at the north end of Finikoudes, Europe Square features elegant British colonial buildings and hosts seasonal events and exhibitions.

13. Tuzla (Skala) Neighborhood
This historic multicultural quarter offers narrow streets, whitewashed houses, ceramic workshops, and authentic cafés. A great option for discovering local life in Larnaca. We enjoyed exploring the Zuhuri Mosque while in this area. Entry is free, but be sure to wear modest clothing that covers the whole body (legs and shoulders/arms) out of respect.

While in the old town, be sure to enjoy delicious Cypriot meze, halloumi, sheftalia, and fresh seafood at tavernas throughout the Old Town—one of the tastiest things to do in Larnaca.

14. Larnaca–Dhekelia Coastal Bike Route
Rent a bike and enjoy one of the island’s most beautiful coastal rides, stopping at beaches, cafés, and viewpoints along the way.
The top rated place to rent bikes in Larnaca, with a wide variety of bike types, including e-bikes, is Adventure Cyprus Cycling.

Suggested Half-Day Walking Route in Central Larnaca
To see many of the best things to do Larnaca, follow this easy walking loop:
- Holy Church of Saint Lazarus – Start with the city’s most important Byzantine site.
- Wander the Old Turkish Quarter (Skala) – Charming architecture & small artisan shops, and the Zuhuri Mosque.
- Continue to Larnaca's Medieval Fort – Explore the stone walls and sea views.
- Walk the Finikoudes Promenade – Perfect for coffee, gelato, and seaside relaxation.
- End at the Archaeological Museum of Larnaca District – A great wrap-up to the city’s ancient history.
Optional Extensions:
- If you have another hour or so, continue from the Archaeological Museum to the Archaeological Site of Kition, the remains of the ancient city that preceded modern Larnaca. The site includes remnants of temples, massive stone walls, and evidence of the copper industry that helped make ancient Kition an important Mediterranean trading center. Pairing Kition with the Archaeological Museum is particularly worthwhile, as the museum provides context for many of the discoveries made around the ancient city.
- Take a quick taxi to the Salt Lake and the Hala Sultan Tekke. It's possible to travel via the 425 bus, but this includes about 30 minutes of total walking.
Where to Stay in Larnaca, Cyprus
For a first visit, we recommend staying around Larnaca Old Town or Finikoudes. Both put you within easy walking distance of Saint Lazarus Church, the Medieval Fort, Finikoudes Beach, restaurants, and much of the walking tour above. Finikoudes is particularly convenient if you're visiting without a car, with easy bus service to and from the airport available.
| Hotel Indigo Larnaca by IHG | Best for a boutique stay. This adults-only hotel occupies restored townhouses in the historic center, close to Saint Lazarus Church and an easy walk from the waterfront. The rooftop pool is a nice bonus after sightseeing. |
| Mercure Larnaca Finikoudes Beach | Best all-around location. A modern option in the Old Town, about a four-minute walk from Finikoudes Beach and convenient for restaurants, shops, and Larnaca's central sights. |
| Qbic City Hotel | Best for a smaller, central hotel. This design-focused boutique property is tucked into the city center within walking distance of Finikoudes, Saint Lazarus Church, the Medieval Fort, restaurants, and shopping |

You had me at flamingos! I had no idea that there were flamingos anywhere in the Mediterranean. This sounds like such an interesting place that I’ve never heard of!
Thank you for this great post! I went long ago to Cyprus and what you write here about overlooking Larnaca – this happened to us. If I go back, I would love to visit the Salt Lake and see the flamingos. And I love the photo of the moonrise!
Thank you for the feedback!
I would definitely want to stay in Larnaca Old Town because I love historic architecture, and it is close to important heritage sites.
I would definitely book a walking tour of the historic Old Town on the first day. I would also rent a bike or book a bike tour guided by a local to explore the island. Cyprus reminds me so much of Malta.
Looking forward to exploring Malta to compare the two!
We have not yet visited Cyprus. So it was interesting to read more about Larnaca and why we should visit. We would certainly head to the beaches and not miss flamingo watching. But this architecture and history is definitely something we would want to see as well.
The beaches and flamingos are wonderful too, but I agree, the architecture and history merit exploring too.
Someday I will return to this beautiful island that I love so much. More time in Larnaca on my next visit.
Hope you have a chance to return!
I love a good aqueduct, and the idea that I could see this along with other ruins, flamingos and beaches seems too good to be true! Thanks for shining a light on Larnaca.
Thank you for the feedback!
I’ve wanted to visit Cyprus for some time, and this has given me even more ideas for Larnaca. I’m particularly drawn to the history, from ancient Kition and the medieval fort to the Church of Saint Lazarus and the old multicultural quarter. It looks like there’s much more to Larnaca than its beaches, which makes it especially interesting to me.
Glad to hear this has piqued your interest!
Larnaca looks like a hidden gem in Cyprus. I like the sea views and architecture of the city.
It’s such a convenient base if you fly in or out of Larnaca airport. We were happily surprised by the variety of things to explore in the area.
Larnaca looks like such an interesting destination beyond its beaches! I love the mix of ancient sites, historic neighborhoods, coastal walks, and the Salt Lake with its flamingos. The suggested walking route is especially helpful for planning a first visit.
Thank you for the feedback!
As someone who’s obsessed with the sea and archaeology/history, this place feels like it was made for me! Definitely want to visit now!
Hope you can visit and explore more of Cyprus too!
Lanarca will definitely be on my to visit list when I visit Cyprus. So many archealogical sites! As a historian I can’t get enough of them.
Paphos is better know for its archaeological sites, but Larnaca has so much to explore too! Hope you can visit.
