A Brief History of St Michael’s Mount Cornwall Castle

St Michael’s Mount has a long history, shaped by its strategic coastal location and religion. An apparition of St Michael is said to have appeared on the island’s west side, leading to this become a destination for pilgrims. The island became a possession of Mont St Michel (in Normandy)’s Benedictine Abbey.

Over the centuries, it evolved into a fortified stronghold, changing hands numerous times. Today, the castle is managed by the St Aubyn family and the National Trust. The St Aubyn family lives in a part of the castle that is off limits to the general public. This is a unique destination, which lets you explore both the grand historic interior and a living, working island community.

Where Is St Michael’s Mount?

St Michael’s Mount sits just offshore from Marazion, a small seaside town in west Cornwall, a short distance from Penzance. On a clear day, the views across the bay are stunning—especially from the beach, where you can see the island rising like a fairytale silhouette from the water.

Marazion is well worth a visit too. This historic market town received its first charter of incorporation from Henry III in 1257, making it one of the oldest chartered towns in the UK.

How to Get to St Michael’s Mount?

The island is reachable by causeway when the tides are low, and via boat at other times.

Walk Across the Causeway (Low Tide)

At low tide, a stone causeway appears and you can walk from Marazion to the island.

  • The walk usually takes 10–15 minutes
  • It’s incredibly scenic and one of the best parts of the experience
  • The causeway can be slippery, wet, or uneven, so wear shoes with grip
  • There may be occasional delivery vans, especially right when the causeway opens, but walkers can easily step off the path.

Take the Ferry Boat (High Tide)

When the tide comes in and covers the causeway, you’ll need to take a small ferry boat.

  • The boat ride is short (just a few minutes)
  • Boats generally run during the main visitor season
  • You’ll board from Marazion harbour

Important: The tide changes daily, so your visit plan should revolve around when you can cross and when the island is open.

How to Check the Tides (Don’t Skip This!)

To plan your visit safely, always check tide times for St Michael’s Mount before you go. The simplest approach:

  • Search for St Michael’s Mount tide times for your date
  • Look for the low tide window (best chance to walk both ways)
  • If you’re visiting during a narrow window, build in buffer time so you don’t get stuck waiting for a boat or miss your entry slot.

Recommended approach: Walk over and return by boat (or vice versa) so you experience both.

What to See on St Michael’s Mount

Even if you’re only visiting for a couple of hours, there’s a lot to see on this tiny island.

1) The Harbour & Island Village

When you first arrive on the island, whether walking or by boat, you'll need to show your ticket before exploring the island. At sea level, the harbour area feels like a small village, with small lanes, shops, and café's to enjoy.

Pro Tip: Reserve well in advance to enjoy Afternoon Tea in the village.

Enjoy a cup of coffee at the Island Café, or ice cream from one of the pop-up shops. A picnic lunch on the large lawns is a perfect way to take in the beautiful views.

2) St Michael’s Mount Cornwall Castle

Most who visit St. Michael's Mount plan a visit to the castle, though it is not included in the standard island ticket. If you haven't visited the island before, we'd suggest adding the castle visit to your ticket. The castle is the island's star attraction, perched high above the harbor. The panoramic views from the castle across Mount’s Bay towards Marazion and Penzance are unmatched from anywhere else on the island.

Pro Tip: visiting the castle requires climbing numerous flights of uneven stairs, as well as walking along uneven cobblestone paths. Keep an eye out for the Giant's Well and the Giant's Heart on the way up, which stem from the Cornish Fairytale, Jack and the Giant Killer.

While you can get decent views of the outside of the castle without a ticket, you can't get close up photos.

Tour a selection of the castle's historic rooms, which contain interesting details from different eras. The castle's chapel was my personal favorite part of the indoor area.

Pro Tip: The castle tour does not exit at the same place that it starts. Be sure to capture any photos of the entry error before starting the tour.

2) Terraced Gardens at St. Michael's Mount Castle

The terraced gardens are an underrated attraction at St Michael’s Mount, and are most definitely worth the additional ticket. Visitors to the sub-tropical gardens will see exotic and sub-tropical plants, growing in and amongst the island's terraced slopes.

A few tips for your gardens visit:

  • The gardens are the perfect opportunity for photography. The castle sits perched above the gardens, with the ocean below. In 2025, there was construction being done on this side of the castle, which marred the views a bit. Even so, the gardens were beautiful!

  • Because these gardens are built into the hillside, they do require walking up stairs and steep hills to reach some of the flowers.

4) Scenic Viewpoints & Coastal Vibes

Even if you don’t go inside the castle, the views are worth the trip.

St Michael’s Mount on the South West Coast Path

If you’re walking the South West Coast Path, St Michael’s Mount makes an incredible detour and reset point—especially on a longer coastal stretch like Penzance to Coverack. It’s a rare kind of stop where you can combine a coastal hiking day with a true “only in Cornwall” landmark. For a more leisurely itinerary, plan to spend a night in Mazarion, giving you plenty of time for your St. Michael's Mount visit.
