Spending a spring vacation week in the Algarve is a great addition to your Easter Holiday in Cascais or Lisbon. The weather is a bit warmer in the Algarve, lending itself to more time in the water than you might get closer to Lisbon at this time of year.
Our Albufeira spring holiday itinerary includes:
- Day 1: Hiking the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
- Day 2: Kayaking to the Bengali Caves
- Day 3: Day Trip to Rio Formosa Natural Park
- Day 4: Beach Day in Albufeira
- Day 5: Day Trip to Monchique
- Day 6: Exploring the Coastal Charm of Lagos
Day 1: Hiking the Hanging Seven Valleys Trail
Start your spring holiday in Albufeira with a hike along the breathtaking Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. Known as one of the most scenic hikes in the Algarve, this trail offers stunning views of the coastline, including cliffs, sea arches, and hidden beaches. There is limited shade on the trail, so try to avoid hiking at the heat of the day. If you prefer to have a guided hike, this Benagil hiking tour would be a good choice.
The Seven Hanging Valleys trail runs from Praia da Marinha, Lagoa on one end to Praia do Vale de Centianes, Carvoeiro on the other. This one way hike can be done in either direction and is approximately 6 km (3.7 miles) one way. The hike takes about 1.5-2 hours to complete one way, depending on how many stops you make.
You can do this as a one way hike, taking an Uber back to the start, or walking back to your starting point. You can also do this trail in sections. There are plenty of parking spots at various spots along the trail if you prefer to do portions of the trail.
Best picnic spots along the trail
- Praia da Marinha, one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe
- Praia do Carvalho, a relatively small beach with crystal clear water and rock formations
- Algar de Benagil, with its caves and incredible natural rock formations
- Alfanzina Lighthouse
- Praia do Vale de Centianes (North end of the trail)

Day 2: Kayaking to the Bengali Caves
Experience the magic of the Algarve from the water by kayaking to the famous Benagil Caves. This natural wonder is best accessed by water, and kayaking offers an up-close experience. Opt for a guided kayaking tour that includes all necessary equipment and safety instructions. We would suggest taking an early tour out to Benagil Caves, before the crowd of boats arrive late morning. We recommend the Benagil: Caves, Beaches, and Secret Spots Guided Kayak Tour. In addition to Benagil, this tour goes to less crowded and off the beaten path spots.
Paddle through crystal-clear waters and explore the stunning cave systems, including the iconic dome of the Benagil Cave. Relax on one of the nearby beaches or enjoy a seafood meal in a local restaurant. We really enjoyed our meal at Dumar d’benagil. The seafood was fresh, service was excellent, and this felt like a great break from the crowds.
Day 3: Day Trip to Rio Formosa Natural Park
Take a break from the the crowds of Benagil and enjoy a day trip to the tranquil Ria Formosa Natural Park in Faro, a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Rio Formosa is right next to the airport in Faro. For easy access and free parking, park at the Estacionamento da Praia de Faro (at the traffic circle before the beach). Rio Formosa can be explored on foot, by bike, kayak, or also motorboats. Check bikebookings.com to arrange for bike rentals, or GetYourGuide for bike tours, kayak rentals, and kayak tours.
Rio Formosa Hiking/Biking Trails
- Ludo Trail: this 7 km loop is almost completely flat and runs from Faro to the Quinta do Lago Golf Club. This trail runs through the areas where you are most likely to see flamingos and a variety of migrating birds.
- São Lourenço Trail: this 3 km trail intersects with the Ludo Trail, and is a great way to connect your walk/bike on the Ludo Trail with the Quinto do Lago Boardwalk. You will find quite a few birds here as well, though we found this stretch a bit more crowded than the Ludo trail.
- Quinto do Lago Boardwalk: this 5 km trail connects Praia do Ancão to the São Lourenço trail (and ultimately the Ludo trail). We had quite a few groups of cyclists pass us while walking this stretch. The boardwalk passes the marsh where the salt and fresh water mix, providing a unique bird habitat.
A great spot for a coffee or lunch break is Gigi’s Beach restaurant Quinta do Lago, which overlooks the boardwalk and river. It is also just a few steps from the beach. Once you reach Gigi’s, you can retrace your steps or choose to walk back on the beach from the Boardwalk trail (we’d only suggest this at low tide).
Suggested Rio Formosa Tours
Day 4: Beach Day in Albufeira
Your spring holiday in Albufeira continues with a leisurely day at the beach. The largest beach in the area is Armação de Pera, which is approximately 10 km long. For a lunch break or a drink, head over to Calixtos Beach Bar and enjoy the friendly service and good food without leaving the beach.
From the north end of the beach, you can access a coastal trail, which ultimately connects with the beach and the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (church of Nossa Senhora da Rocha) and with the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. It is worth the walk to Nossa Senhora, stopping at the many small beaches you pass along the way. If you walk one cove to the north of Nossa Senhora, you’ll find a perfectly placed bench with a spectacular view of the cliffs and rock outcroppings, ideal for a break or picnic.
Day 5: Day Trip to Monchique
Discover the hidden gem of Monchique, a mountain town known for its lush landscapes and traditional Portuguese charm. The drive to Monchique is scenic, winding through hills and valleys. The rolling and winding roads have made Monchique is a cycling hub in the Algarve.
Some suggested things to do in Monchique:
- Caldeira Springs: Don’t miss the thermal springs, known for their healing properties.
- For coffee, visit the Restaurante Velochique, a joint coffee shop, restaurant, and bike shop.
- Visit the local market for artisanal products and enjoy a traditional Portuguese lunch.
- Walk up to the Convento de Nossa Senhora do Desterro.
- Explore the large variety of ceramics studios both in town and on the access roads.
- Hike to Foia, the highest point in the Algarve, for panoramic views of the entire region.
Side Trip to Alte
On the return trip from Monchique, add a delightful detour to Alte, a picturesque village known for its traditional Algarvean charm. Nestled in the foothills of the Serra do Caldeirão mountains, Alte is celebrated for its white-washed houses, fresh spring waters, and tranquil rural landscapes. Stroll through the village to discover its charm. Visit the 13th-century church, Igreja Matriz de Alte, known for its exquisite Manueline portal.
Fonte Pequena & Fonte Grande are Alte’s famous natural springs and waterfalls, offering a serene setting for relaxation. Take a moment to enjoy the peaceful sounds of flowing water and the beauty of the surrounding nature.
Day 6: Exploring the Coastal Charm of Lagos
Begin your exploration in the charming Old Town of Lagos. Wander through its cobbled streets, admiring the 16th-century walls and picturesque squares.
Key spots to visit on your day in Lagos:
- Fortaleza da Ponta da Bandeira: Visit this 17th-century fortress at the harbor entrance, offering insights into Lagos’ maritime past and stunning sea views.
- Lagos offers a plethora of dining options. Choose a restaurant by the marina to enjoy fresh seafood while overlooking the boats. An alternative to the marina, and well known by locals, is Maria Petisca, a great tapas restaurant.
- Spend your afternoon at Praia Dona Ana and Praia do Camilo, both known for their golden sands and clear waters, set against dramatic cliffs.
- Ponta da Piedade: No trip to Lagos is complete without visiting this natural landmark. Marvel at the stunning rock formations, sea arches, and grottos. Consider a boat tour for a closer look.
With its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and array of activities, Albufeira is the perfect destination for a memorable spring vacation. Whether you’re paddling through sea caves, hiking scenic trails, or exploring quaint hilltop villages, each day promises a new adventure. So pack your bags, bring your sense of adventure, and get ready for an unforgettable spring holiday in Albufeira!

Getting to Albufeira
Getting to Albufeira for your spring holiday is quite straightforward and can be done in several ways. The nearest airport is Faro Airport, which is about 40 kilometers east of Albufeira. From Faro Airport, visitors have multiple options to reach Albufeira.
Faro to Albufeira
- We recommend renting a car directly at the airport, offering the flexibility to explore the Algarve region at your leisure. Alternatively, there are numerous shuttle services, private transfers, and taxis available, providing direct transportation to Albufeira.
- For those preferring public transport, buses and trains are also viable options. The train involves a short trip from Faro to Albufeira’s station, followed by a bus or taxi ride to your lodging.
- The direct bus service from Faro to Albufeira is another economical and convenient choice, though it typically takes a bit longer.
Lisbon to Albufeira
- Driving down from Lisbon (whether via rental car or transfer) is about 2.5 hours, mainly on an inland highway. Though you pass farmland, this route misses most of the scenic coastline and inland mountainous areas. You can of course choose to drive via the coast, though this will add a few hours to your trip.
- The train from Lisbon takes about 2.75 hours, and make for a relaxing and enjoyable transfer to the Albufeira area.

This is truly the ultimate guide! So many great suggestions including taking trips to Alte and Lagos. I’d love to have a picnic at Praia do Carvalho and check out one of the many hiking and biking trails.
Not all the pictures were loading, but I can tell from your descriptions that this is a beautiful place. I love the idea of thermal springs or kayaking in the Benagil Caves. Hiking the Hanging Seven Valleys Trail sounds nice too. Lots of great options!
The Algarve is always a great idea and spring is an amazing time to visit! Great post!
I love this detailed post and wonderful photos! We were just in Portugal again and loved being in the Algarve for the new year! We had not been back since 2008, so it was a treat to see it, then Sintra and Lisbon again. We luxury camped in our vintage van with our daughter in 2008 for a few weeks right next to Rio Formosa Natural Parks so know it well. 🙂 This time we were in a tiny village between Lagos and Portimao and near Praia Da Rocha beach for a few weeks so not far from Albufeira, but never made it back there. Perhaps we will check it out when we return from Cape Verde in April. 🙂
Your trips to Portugal sounds great, and Cape Verde sounds amazing. I’ve never made it down there–heading back to Tenerife shortly, but I think we’ll have to add Cape Verde to the list. 🙂
Now I can see why so many people visit the Algarve…it looks amazing! I would love try kayaking in the benagil caves.
