5–8 Hour Layover: Visit Marienplatz & Viktualienmarkt
For 5-8 hour layovers, pay a visit to the heart of Munich’s Christmas market scene. Start at Marienplatz Christkindlmarkt, the city’s oldest and most traditional. Afterwards, walk to the Viktualienmarkt for a mix of gourmet food stalls and festive gifts.
Münchner Christkindlmarkt (Marienplatz Christmas Market)

Located in Munich old town’s Marienplatz, the Münchner Christkindlmarkt, or Marienplatz Christmas Market, is at the heart of Munich’s Christmas festivities. This Christmas market dates all the way back to the 1600’s, though it was relocated to its current location in 1972. Enjoy walking through the Altstadt, where the lights and stalls mix with the old buildings adorned for the holidays. This area is reminiscent of the Christmas market in Heidelberg in winter, though at a much larger scale.
When you exit the Marienplatz station, it’s hard to miss the Christkindlmarkt, with its 25 meter high Christmas tree, located just under the town hall.
| Opening Dates 2025 | November 24 to December 24, 2025 |
| Opening Hours | Monday-Saturdays: 10 am to 9 pm, Sundays: 10 am – 8 pm on Sundays, December 24: 10 am – 2 pm |
| Admission Fee | Free |
| How to Get to the Marienplatz Christkindlmarkt | Take the S8 or S1 S-Bahn from Munich Airport to Marienplatz (normally 40–45 minutes each way), with trains running every 10-15 minutes. Leave 1 hour for the return trip on the S-Bahn, in case of train delays. |
Highlights of the Marienplatz Christmas Market
- Visit the Christmas tree, with its 3000+ candles (also a great meeting spot for groups).
- Enjoy a Glühwein (mulled wine) as you wander through the many stalls. Traditionally made from red wine, try the white wine and blueberry wine variations too.
- Shop the many traditional Christmas ornaments (many are made from wood or straw),
- Shop for Munich’s traditional nativity scenes at the Kripperlmarkt’s stalls on St. Peter.
Pro Tip: If you’d like to avoid the crowds of tourists, consider visiting one of Munich’s neighborhood markets instead, such as the Haidhauser Weihnachtsmarkt.
Music and Events at the Marienplatz Christmas Market
- Live Bavarian Stubenmusic at the Town Hall for 30 minutes Sundays-Thursdays at 5:30 pm (and December 24th at noon).
- Christmas Carol sing-along at St. Michael on Neuhauser Straße on Wednesdays at 4:30 pm (through December 17) (check website for the final list of sing along dates).
- Annual Krumpus Run (14 December 2025, from 3 to 5 pm), a 500 year old tradition where wild characters (including Krampus, Perchten and Klause) run through the streets.
- The Children’s Museum hosts a Heavenly Workshop (Himmelswerkstatt), where children ages 6-12 can make Christmas candles in the Ratstrinkstube in the Town Hall. Free of charge, from 27 November to 14 December, daily from 2.30 and 4.00 pm and 4.30 to 6 pm
Pro Tip: If you have time, ride the Christkindltram from nearby Sendlinger-Tor-Platz. For 4 Euros per person, this 30 minute tour on the decorated tram includes mulled wine or punch for kids, and gingerbread snacks.

Viktualienmarkt

Just a 5 minute walk from Marienplatz, Munich’s daily food market (Viktualienmarkt) turns festive during the holiday season, with seasonal stalls and holiday decorations.

Pro Tip: This is a great stop for edible souvenirs like Lebkuchen, specialty mustard, and sausages.

Tips for Enjoying Munich Christmas Market Holidays
- The Marienplatz Christkindlmarkt in particular gets very crowded, especially on weekends and just before Christmas. Visit during the week and earlier in the holiday season for a more relaxed visit.
- Munich airport has luggage storage available if you'd like to store checked bags or carry-ons.
- Leave enough time to go through security and customs before your next flight.

- Dress warmly: Layers, jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves are essential for cold December evenings.
- Mix day and night visits: See the markets in daylight for browsing, then pick one market to return to in the evening for the lights.
- Bring cash: Some smaller vendors don’t accept cards, though this is becoming more uncommon.
- Don't rush: Consider slowing down to enjoy the experience. Spread this over two days or more, leaving you time to also explore Munich's many sights.

Amazing choices for Christmas markets. 48 hours shopping, would certainly be enough for me. 😊
Thanks for the feedback!
This would be my ideal long layover activity. I can’t really see us booking a trip specifically for the markets but with several hours in Munich, this would be great!
It is a wonderful layover activity!
I love that there is a Christmas market at the airport! What a lovely idea and what a great way to spend times between flights!
It is a fun way to get a quick Christmas market experience right at the airport!
I am excited to say we are flying to Frankfurt next week to start a tour of Christmas Markets. I have wanted to do this for so many years. They all look colorful and festive and I’m ready to be in theChristmas spirit. Thanks for this excellent post.
Have a wonderful trip! I really enjoyed the Heidelberg, Mainz, and Frankfurt markets in case those are on your list.
What a pleasant idea for passing the time between flights.
(Though I’m more the type to staying town a day or so to really enjoy the ambience!)
Thank you for the feedback!
I am a Christmas market fan. I took my sister to France to see the oldest European Christmas market in Strasbourg. We spent five days. It was incredible. I have been yearning to go back to see the German markets. Great post!
We were in Strasbourg recently, but I haven’t yet made it there during the Christmas markets. Sounds like fun too!
It is interesting read. I never knew that there is a Christmas market in the Munich airport. Also it’s good to know that there is luggage storage faciliry in the airport. Thanks for detailed information and useful tips.
Thank you for the feedback. It is very nice during a Long layover to have the Christmas market at the airport, even if you can’t make it to the markets in town.
Who needs an airport lounge when you could have a whole Christmas market at your disposal?
Definitely more fun than a crowded airport lounge!
I love visiting German ChristmasMarkets. I haven’t been to Muncih yet, but it looks so cozy and just love the lights in the evening.
I love visiting German Christmas markets too. It’s a fun addition to any travel itinerary.
As someone who absolutely adores Christmas and everything festive, going to a European Christmas market is HIGH on my bucketlist. It’s so cool that it’s possible to experience so many during a layover! I can’t believe even the airport has one!! Great tip about making sure to experience the markets during the day and at night. I usually gravitate towards the night when it comes to festive events because of the twinkling lights, but great reminder as to why it’s worth checking them out during the day as well.
Thank you for the feedback. Hope you can visit with time to explore many of the markets.
I’m dying to go to the Christmas markets in Europe but haven’t been able to make it yet. I love that you have info for the smaller markets as well as the big ones. I’ll keep this guide for next year- maybe I can make it happen then. Thanks for the info!
Thank you for the feedback!
