Visiting the Grutas de Mira de Aire caves is a guided experience that takes you deep beneath the surface. We visited on a slightly rainy day. Our cave tour turned out to be a great way to escape the impending rain storm.

Grutas de Mira de Aire Caves Tour Experience

All visitors must be part of a guided tour to enter the caves. Buy tickets on site, and you can join the next available tour. There is typically no more than 30 minutes between tours. While the tour is in Portuguese, visitors can download an app at the ticket counter that lets them follow along in another language.

The tour kicks off with a short film about the cave’s history and geology, which provided a great deal of context for the upcoming tour. While the film is in Portuguese, it has English subtitles.

After the film, descend 683 steps into the earth, passing through a sequence of large caverns linked by walkways and stairs. Along the route, you’ll see:

• Towering stalagmites
• Delicate stalactites hanging from the ceiling (our favorites were in the “spaghetti room”)
• Limestone curtains and columns
• Underground streams and fountains
• Colorful illuminated chambers
• Many rooms feel cathedral-like
• The air felt fresh throughout the cave tour

After about an hour, the tour wrapped up with an elevator ride back to the surface. I would have preferred walking back up the stairs. After packing the entire tour group onto the elevator, I was feeling claustrophobic during the ride up. Thankfully, it went fairly quickly and we emerged back on the surface none the worse for wear.

Accessibility

With 683 stairs and uneven, slippery surfaces, the caves may be challenging for travelers with mobility limitations.

Bringing Kids

The Grutas de Mira de Aire caves are a fantastic experience for families and are generally very kid-friendly, especially for school-age children. The guided tour format keeps things engaging, and the dramatic lighting and large cavern spaces tend to capture kids’ attention. Our guide was excellent, interacting with the children, keeping them engaged.

That said, there are a few important safety considerations:

• The tour involves a significant number of stairs and some steep sections, so children should be comfortable walking slowly and listening for about an hour.
• Surfaces can occasionally be damp or slippery, so sturdy shoes with good grip are recommended.
• Younger children should be closely supervised at all times, especially near railings and the many drop-offs within the cave.
• Strollers are not permitted due to the stairs—baby carriers are the better option for infants or toddlers.

Bringing Pets

Pets are allowed inside the Grutas de Mira de Aire caves, as long as the remaining members of the visiting group do not mind their presence.

• Keep your pet close and under control throughout the visit.
• Be mindful of stairs, damp surfaces, and darker sections of the cave.
• Consider whether your dog will be comfortable in a cool, enclosed underground environment, where they have to stand still and move slowly for an hour.
• Bring water for after the visit, especially in warmer months.
