Best Time to See Fall Foliage in Boulder

The best time to visit Boulder, Colorado to see fall foliage is typically from mid-September through mid-October, depending on elevation, temperatures, and moisture levels. Trees at higher elevations, like those along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway, tend to peak during the 2nd half of September. The trees in lower elevations, such as in town in Boulder, often reach their peak in the 1st half of October.

Scenic Drives in Fall, Boulder Colorado

These scenic drives are best done with a car. Though you can take buses for portions of the route (e.g., Boulder to Nederland, Boulder to Estes Park), the full routes are not possible with a bus.

Be sure to prepare for mountain driving, as snow can come early, especially at higher elevations.

If you prefer not to drive, there are a number of tour options:

Peak to Peak Scenic Byway

This 55 mile iconic drive begins just west of Boulder in Nederland and runs north to Estes Park. The Peak to Peak Scenic Byway is one of the most beautiful fall drives in Colorado, with aspen-lined roads, sweeping mountain views, and access to a variety of lakes, photo- and hiking stops. Don’t miss stops at:

• Barker Reservoir: stop on the east side of the reservoir for beautiful views over the water with the mountains in the background,
• Nederland’s downtown: the Train Cars’ Kava and Coffee (in a train car) is a fun coffee stop,
• Mud Lake, with gorgeous views across the lake, just a short walk from the parking lot (just north of Nederland),
• Caribou Ranch, for more moderate hiking options through beautiful aspens (just beyond Mud Lake),
• Indian Peaks Wilderness Area and Brainard Lake Recreation Area both have a wide variety of hiking trails to explore,
• Brainard Lake Recreation Area, for easy and more challenging alpine lake hikes.
• Wild Basin entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, for beautiful foliage and waterfalls,
• Estes Park downtown, enjoy a family friendly meal at Big Horn Restaurant.

If you have time, connect this drive to a 2-day visit to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Pro Tip: The Peak to Peak Scenic Byway can get quite crowded during peak foliage season, especially on weekends. If possible, visit mid-week or leave early to avoid crowded roads.
Be aware that you will be sharing the road with quite a few cyclists (whether on bicycles or motorcycles).

Lariat Loop Scenic Byway

If you are looking for a second day of scenic driving, the Lariat Loop is nearby, winding through Golden, Evergreen, and Morrison. The start of this loop is about 30 minutes from Boulder. It features stunning foliage, the charm of these mountain towns, and stunning overlooks, especially on the drive up Lookout Mountain. Combine this with a visit to Red Rocks Park or Evergreen Lake for more leaf-peeping adventures. If you have enough time, it’s definitely worth extending this to include Guanella Pass also, with its stunning alpine lakes and large aspen groves.

Rocky Mountain National Park

If you decide to extend your scenic drive into Rocky Mountain National Park after driving the Peak to Peak Highway, we’d recommend:

• Fall River Road
• Bear Creek Corridor (where you’ll find a number of the top day hikes in RMNP)
• Trail Ridge Road

In this case, you’d ideally spend the night in Estes Park or Grand Lake, or within the park.

Scenic Walks & Hikes to See Fall Foliage in and around Boulder

Whether you’d like a short, easy, accessible walk or a moderate forest hike, these are some of the best spots to soak in fall color around Boulder.

Wonderland Lake

The peaceful Wonderland Lake loop trail in North Boulder offers a swath of golden cottonwoods reflected in calm waters, with the foothills providing a stunning backdrop. It’s accessible via bus from downtown and is an easy walk with high foliage payoff.

• Distance: 1.8 miles (2.9 km)
• Difficulty: Easy (handicap-accessible)
• Pet-friendly: Yes, on leash
• Average drive time from downtown Boulder: 7 minutes from downtown Boulder
• Public Transport: take the SKIP bus to Violet & Broadway. Walk 0.2 miles (0.32 km) from there to the trailhead.

Boulder Creek Path

This multi-use path, stretching through the heart of Boulder, is lined with glowing trees, especially near Eben G. Fine Park and the eastern Bobolink Trail. Great for biking or walking under the fall foliage. An e-bike tour of Boulder downtown and the Boulder Creek Path are a wonderful way to enjoy the foliage, and are one of Boulder’s top family-friendly tours.

• Distance: 7.6 miles (12.2 km)
• Difficulty: Easy (handicap-accessible)
• Pet-friendly: Yes, on leash
• Average drive time from downtown Boulder/Public Transport: not needed, the path passes through downtown)

To extend this walk or bike:

• Continue onto the Boulder Canyon Trail, a 2.6 mile (4.2 km) gravel trail, from the West end of the Boulder Creek Path.
• Take the Bobolink Trail, a 2.5 mile (4.1 km) mainly gravel trail heading south from Baseline/Cherryvale.

Coot Lake (and Boulder Reservoir)

Located just north of the city, these two scenic bodies of water provide wide-open views of golden trees, mirrored in the water on still autumn mornings. We’d recommend parking at Coot Lake (or Tom Watson Park across the street from the Coot Lake trailhead).

Enjoy the short, flat, gravel trail around Coot Lake, or extend this walking one of the many paths down to the north side of Boulder Reservoir. One of the big perks of this area is that dogs can be off leash if they have the proper Boulder permits.

• Distance: 1.3 miles (2.1 km)
• Difficulty: Easy
• Pet-friendly: Yes, off leash with Boulder permit
• Average drive time from downtown Boulder: 14 minutes
• Public Transport: there is no public transport to the trailhead (closest bus stop is about 1.7 miles away)

Sawhill Ponds

On the east side of Boulder, the Sawhill Ponds area features 18 small ponds surrounded by native grasses and aspens. It’s a quiet, lesser-known spot perfect for birdwatching and fall photography. It’s also a fun spot for cross country skiing in winter when there’s enough snow.

• Distance: 2.1 miles (3.4 km), possibilities to extend this
• Difficulty: Easy
• Pet-friendly: Yes, on leash
• Average drive time from downtown Boulder: 16 minutes
• Public Transport: there is no public transport to the trailhead

Mud Lake

Just outside Nederland, the easy hike on gravel paths around Mud lake is 0.7 miles long (1.1 km), but you can extend this on surrounding trails. There are scattered benches around the lake, a perfect spot to relax (or maybe read a book?) on a beautiful autumn day.

• Distance: 0.7 miles (1.1 km)
• Difficulty: Easy
• Pet-friendly: Yes, on leash
• Average drive time from downtown Boulder: 30 min
• Public Transport: You can take a bus to downtown Nederland, but the trailhead is about 2 miles beyond the bus stop.

Caribou Ranch Open Space

The open space at Caribou Ranch lies just beyond Mud Lake, and many people connect the two trail systems. Keep in mind that, while dogs are allowed on the Mud Lake trails, they are not allowed at Caribou Ranch Open Space. The Delonde and Bluebird Loop is one of the most popular trails through this open space, leading through aspen groves, open meadows, and past barn buildings.

• Difficulty: Moderate
• Pet-friendly: No
• Average drive time from downtown Boulder: 35 min
• Public Transport: n/a (see comments on Mud Lake)

Moose are commonly seen on the Caribou Ranch trails. Be sure to keep your distance from moose, keeping in mind that the mothers are especially territorial and protective if you approach their calves.

Front Range Boy Scout Trail

The main road from Boulder to Nederland can be crowded especially on weekends during leaf peeping season. If you’d like an alternate scenic walk at elevation near Boulder, consider heading to the Front Range Boy Scout Trail off of West Magnolia Road. This is a former forest service road that winds through the trees.

• Distance: 2.7 miles (4.3 km)
• Difficulty: Easy
• Pet-friendly: Yes (on leash)
• Average drive time from downtown Boulder: 30-35 min
• Public Transport: none available

Pro Tip: These trails are not well marked. Be sure to download a map in advance, as there is almost no cell service off of West Magnolia Road.

Wild Basin Area, Rocky Mountain National Park

About an hour from Boulder, this lesser visited entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park is beautiful during fall foliage season. One of our favorite trails leads to Ouzel Falls, passing dense aspen groves and a few other waterfalls along the way.

• Distance: 5.3 miles (8.5 km)
• Difficulty: Moderate
• Pet-friendly: No
• Average drive time from downtown Boulder: 1 hr 5 min
• Public Transport: there is no public transport directly to the trailhead
