Can You Visit the Christmas Market in Frankfurt During a Layover?
A visit to the Christmas Market in Frankfurt is perfectly doable on a layover of 6 hours or more, provided you plan your timing carefully.
The following are rough guidelines for your layover.
- Allow about 1 hour to clear customs and reach the train.
- Spend 2–3 hours exploring the market area (you could easily spend a full day if you enjoy visiting the many shops and galleries along the way).
- Return at least 2 hours before your next flight to leave time to clear security.
Pro Tip: Always check the Frankfurt Airport site for the latest information on security times to ensure that you don’t miss your flight.
| By Public Transport | Follow signs to the Regionalbahnhof (Regional Train Station) in Terminal 1. Take S-Bahn lines S8 or S9 toward Frankfurt Hauptwache or Frankfurt Hbf (Main Station). Travel time: ~17 minutes to the city center. Cost: About €6-7 one way for adults, or consider buying a 1-day pass for €12-13. |
| By Taxi | A taxi takes about 20-25 minutes without traffic and costs on average €30-40. Check drive times when you arrive, as this can take much longer with traffic. |
Pro Tip: Download and use the Deutsche Bahn app to purchase tickets and see the latest schedules. This app gives you visibility into any delays, which Google Maps and Apple Maps often don’t display.
Self-Guided Walking Tour of the Christmas Market in Frankfurt
Start: Hauptwache Station
Whether you are coming for the airport or not, Hauptwache Station is a great starting point for this Christmas Market tour. Here you’ll find a lively mix of historic and modern Frankfurt. During Christmas, you’ll find smaller festive stalls, music, and decorations — a perfect warm-up before entering the heart of the market.

Don’t miss:
- Photos of the 18th-century Hauptwache building lit for the holidays
- Enjoy a Glühwein to start your walking tour
- Optional detour: Pop into the Galeria rooftop café for sweeping skyline views.

From Hauptwache, walk downhill along the Zeil and into the Altstadt. It’s just a few minutes’ walk to your next step.
Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz (Pink Christmas Frankfurt)
Walk Time from Hauptwache: 2 minutes
This intimate and colorful market nook is known for “Pink Christmas Frankfurt” — a cheerful, inclusive celebration featuring pink lights, lively music, stylish ornament stalls, and standout cocktails. This is a perfect spot to grab a drink and catch up with friends. You won’t typically find rides and kids entertainment here.
Why it’s special:
- LGBTQIA+ friendly vibe
- Pink Glühwein and themed drinks
- Great early-evening atmosphere

Continue from here a few more minutes to get to Roßmarkt.
Roßmarkt
Walk Time from Friedrich-Stoltze-Platz: 3 minutes
Roßmarkt offers a spacious, slightly quieter section of Frankfurt’s Christmas Market. It’s excellent for browsing gifts, ornaments, and artisan products without the crowds of Römerberg. Enjoy having a drink or a bite to eat in the cozy seating areas near the ferris wheel.

Top things to do:
- Admiring and photographing the pyramid right in the center of the market
- Viewing and taking photos in the decorated horse and carriage
- Casual snacks
- Souvenir shopping
- A quiet introduction before entering the historic core
Pro Tip: For those who’d like a quieter evening or day in the markets, Roßmarkt could be a great solution!

From here, continue straight toward the Old Town — Römerberg is next.
Römerberg (the Heart of Frankfurt’s Christmas Market)
Walk Time from Roßmarkt: 5–6 minutes
Welcome to the iconic centerpiece of the Christmas Market in Frankfurt. Half-timbered houses form a dramatic backdrop to the enormous Christmas tree dominating the square. Despite the crowds in this area, we’d recommend visiting at least once. Enjoy a hot drink and stroll slowly, soaking in the atmosphere.
Pro Tip: Don’t miss the playing of the St. Nicholas Church tower horns on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 6 pm.

What to See:
- The Giant Christmas Tree — the tallest holiday tree in Germany
- The Römer (City Hall) — medieval façades perfect for photographs
- St. Nicholas Church — listen for evening brass concerts
- Glühwein stalls and handmade ornaments lining the square
Pro Tip: Be sure to stop in the Käthe Wohlfahrt store on the Römerberg for traditional ornaments and Christmas decorations. We usually visit Käthe Wohlfahrt whenever we’re in Heidelberg, but their smaller stores at various German Christmas markets are quite convenient.

Your next stop, Paulsplatz, is right next door.
Paulsplatz
Walk Time from Römerberg: 1 minute
Just to the west of Römerberg sits Paulsplatz, home to the historic St. Paul’s Church (Paulskirche) — where Germany’s first freely elected parliament met in 1848.

Why visit:
- Excellent food stalls (Bratwurst, Kartoffelpuffer, roasted nuts)
- Views of St. Paul’s church decorated for the season
- More space to step aside and enjoy a warm drink
Pro Tip: Don’t miss the artist’s Christmas Market inside St. Paul’s Church daily from 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm November 25th-December 21, 2025 (open until 6:00 pm on December 21).

Continue heading south through the Old Town toward the river — Mainkai is next.
Mainkai (Riverside Path) & the Children’s Christmas Market
Walk Time from Paulsplatz: 4–5 minutes
Emerging onto the riverfront, you’ll find a more relaxed and scenic market zone along the Mainkai. The crowds thin out in this smaller corner of the market. The views of Frankfurt’s skyline reflecting on the river at sunset are certainly worth a visit.

Children’s Christmas Market
Located a bit further down the same riverside promenade, the Children’s Market features:
- Children’s rides
- Craft tents
- Toy stalls
- Climb aboard the decorated train

Quick Detour:
Walk onto the Eiserner Steg (Iron Bridge) for unbeatable skyline photos.

Return Walk to Hauptwache
Walk Time from Mainkai: 10–12 minutes
After exploring the riverfront, loop back toward the city — you’ll finish your tour returning to Hauptwache. Follow signs back into the city center, passing again through Paulsplatz and the Zeil. This brings you full circle to Hauptwache Station, where you can hop directly onto the S-Bahn back to Frankfurt Airport.
Pro Tip: Another great spot to pick up souvenirs / gifts is at the Lebkuchen-Schmidt store near Hauptwache. These traditional Nürnberger Lebkuchen are a must-have during the Advent season.
Where to Eat at the Christmas Market in Frankfurt
You’ll pass countless places to eat, but here are a few of the best easy food options that you’ll find along the walking loop:
- Bratwurst — German sausage
- Soups — traditional options include Goulash (beef stew) and potato soup with sausage
- Kartoffelpuffer — crispy potato pancakes
- Flammkuchen — flatbreads with toppings
- Bethmännchen (Frankfurt’s marzipan pastries) — primarily in Römerberg
- Bretzeln — rather than just the traditional salted pretzels, you’ll also find sweet options
- Glühwein, Apfelwein, Hot Cocoa — all markets

Where to Stay Near the Christmas Market in Frankfurt
Choosing a hotel near the Altstadt or city center allows you to visit during the day, take a break, and then return in the evening to enjoy the ambience.

I can’t get enough of German Christmas markets, though I haven’t been to Frankfurt yet. I really love the artwork in St. Paul’s Church and hope to visit it myself next year.
The artwork is such a wonderful addition to the traditional Christmas activities.
I was in Frankfurt about four years back but just before the Christmas season started so unfortunately I missed all of this… will definitely have to return to experience this for myself for sure!
Hope you can visit Frankfurt during the holiday markets!

Both the Frankfurt and Munich markets are great destination markets, or ones to visit during a layover.
I love this idea of a place to visit during a layover. Sometimes we just get stuck and stay at the airport, but if you are willing to make the effort, there are still things you can do.
It is so easy to store things in a locker and head into the city. Nice to get some fresh air too between flights.
