Tucked away in the northeastern part of Tenerife, within the breathtaking Anaga Rural Park, lies one of our favorite hikes on the island. The loop hike from Benijo to Cruz del Draguillo and back down takes you through some of the most stunning landscapes the island has to offer. You’ll have stunning views of the rugged coastal cliffs on almost every step of the hike. This guide will take you through everything you need to know to make the Benijo to Cruz del Draguillo hike in Tenerife an unforgettable adventure.
If you’d like a more moderate alternative hike from Benijo, Tenerife, try the Benijo – El Draguillo – Las Palmas trail. You’ll have great views without the elevation gain of the previous hike.

Hiking Route
If you are driving, the best parking is in the dirt lot just past El Frontón Restaurant in Benijo (put in El Frontón for your directions). If you can’t find parking here, there are spots right next to the restaurant and down by the beach. Once you’ve parked, or walked up from the bus, follow the signs for the trail heading towards El Draguillo.
Hike Up to Cruz del Draguillo
We followed this loop clockwise, which we would definitely recommend. This takes you up the steeper section first, followed by a somewhat more gradual downhill, which is easier on your knees.. The trail taken clockwise begins on a dirt road (with broken pavement in a few spots) along the coast, with a modest and steady incline. This part of the trail isn’t exciting, though it offers gorgeous views over the Atlantic, with waves crashing against the towering cliffs below. You’ll see the Roques de Anaga rock formations come into view before reaching El Draguillo.
After reaching the trail junction in El Draguillo, take a sharp right turn to head steeply up the hill towards Cruz del Draguillo. This stretch of the trail is tough. It is steep and though not technical, it will challenge most hikers. We noticed almost all hikers stopping at various points on this uphill to enjoy the spectacular views and to catch their breath. We enjoyed the numerous dragon trees along the trail, providing periodic shade.
Reaching Cruz del Draguillo, you’re rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and coastline. This spot serves as a perfect place to rest, have a snack or drink, and look down at the climb you just completed.
Descent to Benijo
You have the option here to take a left and go to Chamorga, or take a right, following signs for Benijo. Follow the signs for Benijo. The trail is rolling, with one more short uphill stretch before you descend into Benijo. The large rocks near the start of your descent are perfect for a picnic lunch break.
The trail is a steady downhill, at times a bit steep. There is quite a bit of loose gravel, so watch your step on this. This would be a great spot to use trekking poles. I say this from experience as I slipped here on some loose gravel on a steep downhill section and unfortunately caught myself with my hand. Despite my wrist being broken in a few places, I was able to hike the 1.5 miles or so back down.
If you haven’t considered getting travel insurance when you travel, please consider getting it, especially when you head off the beaten path like this.
Visiting Playa Benijo
Be sure to leave time to visit the black sand beach Playa Benijo before or after your hike. The beach is known for its stunning sunsets, dramatic cliffs, and unique rock formations. At high tide, Playa Benijo is almost non-existent. Time your visit with low tide to ensure you have a chance to enjoy a walk on the beach. The surf is quite rough, and you should use caution when considering swimming here.
Wrapping Up your Benijo to Cruz del Draguillo Hike
Offering a mix of coastal and mountain scenery, the hike from Benijo to Cruz del Draguillo in Tenerife is a trail that showcases the island’s diverse natural beauty. Whether you’re an avid hiker or someone seeking a peaceful escape into nature, this trail promises an incredible hiking experience.
Essential Hiking Tips
- Mountain weather: Always check the forecast before heading out and watch for rapid weather changes. When you see bad weather coming, get below timberline.
- Hydration and Fuel: Bring more water for your day hikes than you think you’ll need. Electrolytes can help you stay hydrated (e.g., Nuun and LiquidIV). Don’t drink water from streams and ponds, unless you are using a LifeStraw or similar. Pack energy-boosting snacks like nuts, fruits, and energy bars.
- Leave no Trace: Preserve the natural beauty by following the Leave No Trace principles. Pack out all trash, stay on designated trails, and avoid disturbing wildlife.
- Wildlife Awareness: Be aware of the wildlife in the area. Make noise while hiking to avoid surprising animals and know what to do in an encounter with local animals.
- Navigation: If you are using a map on your phone, make sure that it is downloaded. Cell service can be unreliable in the wilderness areas. Inform someone of your hiking plan and expected return time.
- First Aid: Carry a basic first aid kit for minor injuries. This should include, at minimum, Band-Aids, antiseptic, aspirin, mirror, matches, and a jack-knife, a whistle, flashlight, and multi-tool.

Thanks, I really liked the dragon trees as we explore especially the north side of the island.

Wow it looks so picturesque, I missed it on Tenerife. Such a great hike and best beach on Tenerife…
Playa Benijo is a great beach, as long as you catch it at low tide.
You are hiking in paradise! I have to admit that I had to look up Tenerife on a map to figure out where it was. Now that I know, I feel I MUST go there! If for no other reason than to see some of those otherworldly Dragon trees!
The dragon trees were really cool. Definitely worth a visit to Tenerife despite the long travel distance for most to get there.
Wow, the elevation gain looks strenuous but the payoff is worth it, I can imagine.
It seemed worth it. There are trails with much less elevation gain, and very nice views.
The views on this hike are incredible. I love the dragon trees.
Yes, the dragon trees were some of my favorites.
I’m not much of a hiker so may struggle with this hike – but you never know – I may surprise myself! It is amazing what you will do for a great view!
There is a hike along the coast with very nice views that you could enjoy (from Benijo to El Draguillo and beyond).
The view is 100% worth it! Sooo stunning 😍
I agree, the views make this an amazing spot for a hike!
The view sure makes the steep climb worth it!
I agree!
We have yet to make it to Spain, but we are big hikers and are definitely saving this post for when we get there!
Definitely keep Tenerife in mind, it’s worth a visit. It is physically closer to Africa, though it’s part of Spain.
I have been to Tenerife a few years ago as a family reunion but only checked out Puerto de cruz, the beach and Loro Parque. Benijo hike looks interesting. The dragon tree looks unique. I must plan another trip to check out this part of Tenerife.
Hope you’re able to make a return trip and explore Tenerife a bit more.
The northern part of Tenerife is so spectacular! Last time I visited the island with a baby and did not get to hike too much. The trail from Benijo is definitely on the bucket list!
Great, hope you can visit!
I didn’t know this hike yet! Adding it to my wish list when going back to Tenerife. This looks amazing!
Hope you can give it a try on your next trip to Tenerife!
