Day 1: Exploring the Undiscovered
Morning: Quiet Walk up Marjan Hill
You’ll start the 1st of 2 days in Split early with a hike up Marjan Hill to the Marjan Viewpoint. This 3.1 km hike goes up 178 meters in elevation. You’ll be treated to panoramic views of Split and the coast once you reach the top. Marjan Forest Park offers a peaceful escape from city life. Hike up early in the morning, with a quick stop to pick up a coffee at the first platform to enjoy at the top. Plan a few hours to enjoy the hike, a coffee on top, and leisurely stroll back down. If you prefer to extend the hike, there are other longer loops around Marjam Park to enjoy.

Afternoon: Varoš, the old fishermen’s district
After wrapping up your hike, venture into charming Varoš, the old fishermen’s district. This area is less frequented by tourists and retains an authentic charm. Wander through narrow labyrinthine alleyways, admire the quaint white stone houses, and medieval churches. Enjoy a quiet lunch at a local konoba, such as Konoba Varoš, which is away from the touristy areas and has friendly service, excellent seafood, and wonderful pasta.

Evening: Sunset at Kasjuni Beach
Conclude your 1st of 2 days in Split at Kasjuni Beach, which sits on one side of Marjan Hill and is one of Split’s best spots to watch the sunset. It is much quieter than Bacvice Beach, and enjoys clear and turquoise waters. If you’re feeling adventurous, explore the nearby caves. You’ll also find Joe’s Beach Bar nearby.
Day 2: Cultural Immersion and Relaxation
Early Morning: Old Town
Begin your second day in Split with the magic of Diocletian’s Palace, one of the top Roman ruins in Europe. As the city sleeps, stroll past the ancient walls of the eastern Silver Gate and into the heart of the palace, where the Peristyle, the central square of the complex, invites you in with its timeless allure. This is the perfect time to capture photographs without the distraction of bustling tourists or to simply soak in the ambiance of this historical marvel.

Continue to the Golden Gate, once the main entrance to the palace. As the sun rises, make your way to Pjaca (People’s Square), where the Venetian architecture and the old Town Hall provide a stunning backdrop for a peaceful morning. Enjoy the quiet of the square, which buzzes with life during the day, now yours to admire in solitude.
This early morning walk sets a tranquil tone for the rest of your day, allowing you to appreciate the grandeur of Split’s history in a rare moment of calm.

Late Morning: Visit the Gallery of Fine Arts
As the crowds pick up in the top tourist spots, head over to the Gallery of Fine Arts. This lesser-known gem houses an impressive collection of Croatian art, reflecting the various states that ruled this region. This gallery is often overlooked by tourists, but is definitely worth a visit.
Afternoon: Stroll Through the Medieval Town of Trogir
Take a short bus or ferry ride to the UNESCO-listed island town of Trogir. Note that the ferry only runs during high season, but it is worth the trip if it’s running while you are in town. Trogir is a medieval treasure, less crowded but equally as charming as Split’s center. You’ll find a mix of Venetian, as well as Greek and Roman architecture and history as you wander through the narrow streets of Trogir.
Explore the historic buildings and quaint cafes. Check availability of one of the top-rated 1/2 day tours from Split to Trogir and the Blue Lagoon below.
Some prefer to stay in Trogir as a base, exploring Split from there. There are a number of pros and cons of staying in Split vs Trogir.

Evening: Relaxing Dinner
After returning to Split, head to a local konoba such as Konoba Matejuška, which is housed in a 19th century stone building within the UNESCO heritage site. They serve fresh and local foods, sourced from the sea and the local Dalmatian countryside.
Concluding your 2 Days in Split
Split, with its rich history and stunning landscapes, offers so much more beyond the usual tourist spots. This 2-day Split itinerary lets you experience the city’s authentic charm while avoiding the crowds. Another great way to avoid the crowd is visiting during the off-season, though we suggest researching the best time to visit the coast of Croatia to decide what time you will enjoy most. After visiting Split, plan to spend 2 days exploring Zadar, with its sea organ, Roman and Venetian ruins, and wonderful old town. Or, consider taking a day trip to Krka National Park with its stunning waterfalls or to visit Bol on Brač with its incredible beaches.
Travel Tips
Where to Stay
We would recommend staying in or near old town Split. Some of our preferred locations are:
- Piazza Heritage Hotel is right in old town, has a restaurant in house, air conditioned rooms and also studios (with kitchens). Luxury.
- Central Square Heritage Hotel is also right in old town, providing convenient access to Diocletian’s Palace. Moderate.
If you prefer to stay near the beach, a few options are:
- Bel Residence is a short walk to 2 beaches, and 20 minutes from Diocletian’s Palace. Budget-Moderate.
- Alba Residence has a rooftop restaurant with views over the beach. Short walk to Firule Beach and Bačvice Beach, 15 minute walk to Diocletian’s Plalace. Moderate.
Getting to Split
For international travelers, the most common route is flying into Split Airport, which is well-connected with major European cities. From the airport, a short bus or taxi ride will take you directly into the heart of the city.
For those already in Europe, taking a train to Split offers a scenic route through the European countryside, though it’s worth noting that train journeys may involve a transfer in Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. Another popular option is arriving by ferry, especially for visitors from nearby Croatian and Italian ports, such as Dubrovnik, Hvar, Brac, and Korcula.
Driving to Split is also a feasible choice, with well-maintained roads and highways connecting it to other major cities in Croatia and neighboring countries, making the journey a scenic road trip. Each mode of travel offers its own unique experience, setting the stage for your memorable visit to Split.

This is my kind of itinerary – avoiding the most obvious (and busy) spots, but still getting to soak up the history and culture, and try some tasty food! I reeeally like the sound of Trogir. 🙂
The last time we visited Split we stayed in Trogir and explored that further. You can easily have a peaceful beach vacation with hiking in Trogir, while taking the ferry or bus into Split if you are looking for a more laid back vacation.
You’re always finding the best views! This seems like a very manageable and enjoyable itinerary. (:
Thanks!
Love these UNESCO sites in Split and Trogir! Is it possible to stay in Trogir or is it just a day trip situation?
On our last trip we based ourself in Trogir. You can easily take a ferry or bus in to Split and come back to Trogir after exploring town.
I’ve never been to Croatia but this has given me some inspiration to add Split to my 2025 travel list.
We’ve enjoyed staying both in Split and in Trogir. The benefit of Split is that it is so easy to day trip to Brac and Hvar, among other islands. Trogir is a great choice if you’re looking to stay in a spot with fewer crowds (but with easy access to Split).

I’ve never been to Croatia, but I will add this to my next year’s Euro summer trips. Thanks for the tips on Split.
Croatia is definitely worth a visit!
We’ve been to both Split and Trogir, and enjoyed Trogir the most. But both are beautiful old cities.
Glad to hear that you’ve enjoyed them as well!
Ah I love discovering hidden gems and these ones in Split look magical! The view from Marjan Hill is incredible! I’ll be sure to check these places out on my next visit. Thanks for the great guide!
Thanks for the feedback!
We visited Split as a cruise port stop and did a tour. We saw quite a bit but would love to go back and enjoy 2 days exploring more. There sure if more to see when you get away from just the port and beach area.
Split and neighboring Trogir are both wonderful places to spend a few days exploring.
How strenuous was the hike? Views look totally worth it.
Marjam Hill is fairly short (just 2 miles), but it does have about 500 feet of elevation gain. Hiking experience isn’t necessarily needed, but some level of fitness would be beneficial.
Croatia is definitely on our bucket list. Thanks for the great tips to add to our list of things to see and do.
Thanks for the feedback!
I appreciate how you laid out my favorite type of vacation itinerary with a nice hike where the payoff is a panoramic view, sightseeing historic areas, a relaxing beach sunset, as well as a nice dinner.
Thanks. Split is wonderful but I need those quiet times too.
What a beauty! I love visiting UNESCO sites. They are always a treasure. I’ll have to share Trogir with my hubs, he loves Medieval anything. Great tips!!
