Croatia is home to two of Europe’s most spectacular waterfall destinations: Plitvice Lakes National Park and Krka National Park. While both feature emerald lakes, cascading waterfalls, and scenic walking trails, they offer very different experiences. If you’re trying to decide between them, the right choice depends on how much time you have, where you’re staying, and what kind of experience you’re looking for. After visiting both parks, we’d recommend Krka National Park for an active day trip from Split or anyone with just one day, while Plitvice Lakes National Park is the better choice if you have two days and want to immerse yourself in Croatia’s most iconic natural landscape.

Plitvice Lakes National Park
If you’ve seen photos of Croatia’s unbelievably turquoise lakes connected by dozens of waterfalls, chances are you’ve seen Plitvice. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is Croatia’s most famous (and first) national park. Sixteen interconnected lakes cascade through dense forests, connected by miles of wooden boardwalks that wind just above crystal-clear water.
Unlike Krka, Plitvice Lakes National Park feels enormous. There are multiple entrances, shuttle buses, electric boats, and enough hiking routes to easily fill more than one day.

Why We Recommend Two Days
Many visitors attempt Plitvice as a day trip from Split or Zagreb, but it makes for a very long day and you’ll be rushing through if you’d like to see all the highlights.
Driving from Split takes roughly 2.5-3 hours each way, leaving limited time to explore one of Croatia’s most beautiful parks.
Instead, spending two days nearby allows you to:
- Explore both the Upper and Lower Lakes without rushing
- Visit early and late when crowds are smallest
- Take longer hiking routes to panoramic viewpoints
- Enjoy quieter sections of boardwalk away from the busiest loops
- Experience the changing light throughout the day
We found that having two days transformed the experience. Rather than feeling pressured to keep moving, we could linger at quiet boardwalks, stop for picnics, and enjoy sections of the park after many day-trippers had already left.
| Pros of Plitvice Lakes | Cons of Plitvice Lakes |
| Croatia’s most spectacular waterfalls Incredible turquoise lakes Larger variety of hiking routes More viewpoints Better for photography Worth dedicating multiple days | Further from Split Requires more walking (and hilly walks) Can feel rushed as a day trip Larger crowds, especially during summer No cycling on the main park trails |

Krka National Park
Krka offers a different experience. Although it’s also famous for beautiful waterfalls and emerald water, the park is much smaller and easier to explore in a single visit.
For travelers staying in Split, this is one of Croatia’s easiest national parks to visit. The drive by car or bus (Flix Bus) takes around an hour, meaning you can spend far more time enjoying the park rather than sitting in the car.
More Than Just Waterfalls
Many visitors only walk the famous Skradinski Buk boardwalk before leaving. However, Krka has much more to offer. The park features:
- Excellent hiking trails
- Scenic cycling routes
- Historic monasteries
- River viewpoints
- Swimming opportunities (while you can’t swim at Skradinski Buk, there are other designated swimming areas in the park)
- Boat excursions
- Peaceful forest paths away from the busiest waterfall area
- Archaeological site of Burum
If you’re an active traveler, Krka has more opportunities to combine hiking or biking with sightseeing than most people realize. We’d recommend planning a whole day here.
| Pros of Krka National Park | Cons of Krka National Park |
| Easy day trip from Split Smaller and less overwhelming Excellent hiking trails Great cycling opportunities Flexible half-day or full-day visit Easy to combine with nearby towns like Šibenik | Fewer Waterfalls Less dramatic scenery Very crowded main waterfall area |

Plitvice vs Krka: Which Park Has Better Waterfalls?
If waterfalls are your main priority, Plitvice wins.
The sheer number of lakes, waterfalls, and turquoise pools creates one of Europe’s most spectacular landscapes.
Krka’s waterfalls are beautiful, particularly Skradinski Buk, but the park has fewer major waterfall areas and doesn’t quite match Plitvice’s scale.
Winner: Plitvice Lakes

Is Plitvice or Krka Better for Hiking?
For short scenic walks, both parks are excellent.
For full-day hiking, they each shine in different ways.
Plitvice offers longer routes that connect lakes, viewpoints, forests, and boardwalks.
Krka has a wider variety of traditional hiking trails outside the main tourist circuit, along with dedicated cycling routes that make it especially appealing for active travelers.
If you enjoy combining hiking with biking, Krka has the edge.
Winner: Tie (depending on your interests)

Which Park Is Better for Cycling?
One of the biggest differences between the parks is where you can cycle.
At Krka National Park, cycling is part of the park experience. Well-marked cycling routes wind through forests, vineyards, traditional villages, and along the Krka River, making it easy to combine sightseeing with a ride.
At Plitvice Lakes National Park, bicycles aren’t permitted on the famous wooden boardwalks or visitor routes through the lakes. However, that doesn’t mean cyclists should skip the area. The roads and trails surrounding the park offer beautiful rides through forests and rural villages. Biking near the village of Rastoke, where we stayed, provided another way to experience its many waterfalls and historic watermills.
Winner: Krka National Park, especially for travelers wanting to incorporate cycling into their visit. However, those planning a longer stay around Plitvice will still find excellent cycling opportunities nearby.

Is Krka or Plitvice Better as a Day Trip from Split?
This is where the biggest difference appears. Although many tours offer day trips to Plitvice, expect:
- Around five to six hours of driving
- An early departure
- Limited time inside the park
Krka, on the other hand, is close enough that you can enjoy a relaxed day without spending most of it on a bus or in the car. When you're planning how long to stay in Split, be sure to set aside a day to day trip to Krka.
For travelers staying in Split with only one free day, Krka is the clear winner.
Winner: Krka National Park

Which Park Is Better for Families?
Both parks are family-friendly, but Krka's smaller size makes it easier with younger children.
You'll spend less time walking between attractions and considerably less time driving if you're staying in Split, Trogir, or Zadar.
Plitvice is better suited to families with older children who enjoy longer walks.
Winner for families with younger children: Krka
Winner for families with older children: Plitvice

Can You Visit Both Plitvice and Krka National Parks in one Trip?
Absolutely.
If you have a week or more in Croatia, we actually recommend visiting both.
A 1-week nature focused itinerary could look like this:
- Spend several days exploring Split (base yourself in either Split or neighboring Trogir)
- Take an easy day trip to Krka National Park.
- Continue north toward Plitvice Lakes.
- Stay in nearby Rastoke for two nights before continuing to Zagreb or Istria.
This gives you the chance to experience Croatia's two most famous national parks without rushing either. We are very partial to Croatia's islands too, and highly recommend adding another week to visit Bol on Brac Island, Korcula, Mljet, and more.

Final Verdict: Plitvice vs. Krka
There's no wrong choice. We loved visiting both parks and found them both to be stunning. But, they excel in different ways.
Choose Krka National Park if you:
- Are staying in Split
- Only have one free day or half day
- Prefer a relaxed itinerary
- Enjoy hiking and cycling
- Want less driving (whether by car, bus, or tour)
Choose Plitvice Lakes National Park if you:
- Have 1-2 days to explore
- Want Croatia's most iconic natural scenery
- Love photography
- Enjoy longer hikes
- Don't mind traveling farther for an unforgettable experience
For most travelers based in Split, we'd recommend Krka as an easy day trip.
If your itinerary allows it, Plitvice is one of Europe's most extraordinary national parks and deserves more than a rushed day trip. Spending two days there, staying either right next to the park or in nearby Rastoke, lets you experience why it's consistently considered one of Croatia's most unforgettable destinations.
