Why Visit Vila Nova de Milfontes Portugal?
We originally spent 3 nights in Vila Nova de Milfontes while hiking the Fisherman’s Trail. It quickly became one of our favorite spots along the Alentejo coastline, which is why we’ve visited again since. The river and ocean beaches set the tone for the town. The calm waters of the Mira River sit just steps away from wild Atlantic waves, giving you options no matter your mood. The vibe in this town is less touristy and more beach, surf, and hiking town.
The town is located within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, an area known for its rugged cliffs, untouched beaches, and slower pace of life. It’s a key stop along the Fisherman’s Trail, making it a favorite for hikers and outdoor lovers. Around sunset each evening, it feels like half the town walks over to the lighthouse and ocean beach to relax and watch the sunset over the Atlantic.
If you’re looking for resorts and manicured golf courses, we’d recommend heading to the southern Algarve. If you’re looking for a quiet and active outdoor vacation, focused on water sports, hiking, biking, or even horseback riding, Vila Nova de Milfontes Portugal could be a great destination for you.
Top Things to Do in Vila Nova de Milfontes Portugal
Hike the Fisherman’s Trail (Rota Vicentina)
One of the highlights of visiting Vila Nova de Milfontes Portugal is hiking the Fisherman’s Trail, a spectacular coastal path that passes directly through town. This is one of the best places to stay on the Fisherman’s Trail. While many stop here just for a night, this is a great base for day hikes or to take a day or two off mid-hike.
- Hike north toward Porto Covo or south toward Almograve (catch a bus or taxi back)
- Expect dramatic cliffs, sandy paths, and ocean views
- Best in spring and fall for comfortable temperatures
Even a short section offers some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Portugal.
Don’t forget to bring along a day pack for hiking, a filtered water bottle, a First aid kit, and trail walking shoes!

Wander the Town: Streets, Fort, Churches & Local Shops
Don’t miss slowing down and simply exploring the heart of Vila Nova de Milfontes. After hiking in the mornings and a long leisurely lunch break, we enjoyed:
- Strolling the cobbled streets lined with whitewashed houses
- Visit the Forte de São Clemente, a 16th-century fort overlooking the mouth of the river and the neighboring square

- Step into local churches like Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça
- Browse small artisan shops and local boutiques for local products produced in Portugal

- Look for small markets set up in the square (we’ve found fresh bread and baked goods here)
- Enjoy relaxed cafés and traditional restaurants tucked into quiet squares
This is where Milfontes really shines—unhurried, authentic, and deeply local.

Explore the Water Sports Along the Mira River and Ocean Beaches

- Rent a paddleboard or kayak for calm-water exploration
- Try windsurfing or a wing foil on the river
- Surfing and bodyboarding on Atlantic beaches
- Take the seasonal ferry across the river to visit the beach, Praia das Furnas (or to hike down to Almograve)
- Enjoy peaceful scenery and birdlife along the estuary
It’s a great destination for both beginners and experienced adventurers.

Visit the Beaches (From Calm to Wild)
One of the biggest draws of Vila Nova de Milfontes Portugal is its variety of beaches. If you don't have a car (and don't want to walk the trails), the easiest beaches to access are those in town and across the river. You'll find restaurants and spots to get a drink and enjoy the views near these in town beaches.
In town (calm river/ocean mix):
- Praia da Franquia (river beach)
- Praia do Farol (where the river meets the ocean)
- Praia do Carreiro das Fazendas (oceanside beach)

Across the river:
- Praia das Furnas (take the ferry across the river to spend the day at the beach)

Wild Atlantic beaches nearby:
- Praia do Malhão (a personal favorite, though few facilities)
- Praia do Almograve (restaurant/bar here, with beautiful sunset views)
There are countless smaller beaches nearby not listed here, which we'd recommend exploring if you have the time. Keep in mind that many of these smaller beaches have no facilities and no lifeguards on duty. Whether you want calm waters or dramatic surf, you’ll find it here.

Go Horseback Riding
For a unique way to experience the landscape, consider horseback riding along the coast and countryside.
Naturahorses, located about 20 minutes by car from the center of town, offers guided rides through:
- Coastal trails and dunes
- Quiet inland paths
- Scenic viewpoints over the Atlantic
Whether you take a guided ride or a beginner horseback riding lesson, it’s a peaceful and memorable way to connect with the natural beauty of the region.
Bike Along the Coast
Cycling is one of the best ways to explore beyond town. Rent a bike and hit the trails or roads.
Popular routes include:
- Vila Nova de Milfontes → Almograve (~26 km round trip)
- Vila Nova de Milfontes → Porto Covo (~40 km round trip)
- Vila Nova de Milfontes to Cabo São Vicente (~100 km one way)
Expect cliffside views, quiet roads, and hidden beaches along the way.

Watch the Sunset Where the River Meets the Ocean
This is one of the most memorable experiences in Vila Nova de Milfontes, and one of the most popular activities in town.
Head to:
- The river mouth near Praia do Farol (try to get a seat at A Choupana, or just sit on the dunes)
- Praia das Furnas (across the river, be sure to check the ferry schedule if you're relying on this for a ride back)
Watching the sun dip into the Atlantic while reflecting off the river is pure magic.

Where to Eat in Vila Nova de Milfontes
Food is a highlight, especially seafood and Alentejo specialties. Everywhere we visited was quite casual; think beach/surf town vibes. Some of the places we'd recommend:
- O Porto das Barcas: north of town, this is the first restaurant you come across when hiking the Fisherman's Trail south from Porto Covo. Great seafood and Alentejo specialties, nice views at sunset, and friendly service.
- A Choupana: right on the ocean beach, this is the place to go for sunset. Have a drink or enjoy the fresh seafood while enjoying the spectacular views.
- Tasca do Celso: in the center of town, enjoy the rustic ambience in this cozy tasca, serving traditional foods.
