Lisbon has become one of the hot spots to visit in Europe, leading to overcrowding in many popular areas. One way to help alleviate this situation is to visit during the off-season, such as in November. A visit in November allows you to explore the city without the crowds. Wander through the historic streets of Alfama, taste the local cuisine featuring delectable seafood, and enjoy a sunset view from São Jorge Castle. Head off the beaten path in Lisbon, taking a tile making workshop or cooking class, or taking a bike ride along the waterfront to Belém.

The weather in November is cooler, with average high temperatures in the mid 60’s F (17-18°C). It does rain an average of 8-12 days in November. While it’s not swimming weather, bring a jacket, umbrella, and some warm clothes to enjoy exploring the seaside and the attractions in and around Lisbon.

Hike the Levadas (irrigation channels) for breathtaking views, or relax in natural swimming pools formed by volcanic rocks. The mild weather here makes outdoor activities enjoyable all year round.

November is a wonderful time to visit Madeira. The weather in November is warmer than in much of mainland Europe, with high temperatures around 70°F (21°C). It does get cooler in the evenings, so be sure to bring a jacket. While Madeira averages 9-10 days of rain in November, it is often short lived, with sun following shortly after. When one side of the island is rainy, the other side may be sunny.

Staying in the city of Funchal is recommended during November. It sits on the sunnier south side of the island, and you’ll have easy access to many restaurants and activities. Don’t miss having high tea at Reid’s Palace, though you’ll need to reserve this as far in advance as possible. High temperatures in Tenerife in November average in the mid 70’s F (around 24°C) by the coast. Keep in mind that it is quite a bit cooler at higher elevations. The island averages 4 days of rain in November, but the remaining days are typically sunny. It’s definitely possible to sun bathe in November and some find it warm enough to swim. We’ve even enjoyed swimming in the natural pools in Los Gigantes in the heart of winter.

4. Rome, Italy

Rome in the off season is magical, with its historic sites like the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Vatican City much less crowded than during high season. Out of this list of our top November destinations, our November (Thanksgiving) trip to Rome ranked #1 for our whole family. Exploring the sites without the crowds is an incredible experience. Enjoy visiting the top instagram-worthy places in Rome often without waiting in a long line to get a photo. The crisp air and golden light enhance the city’s timeless beauty, perfect for reflective and leisurely exploration.

High temperatures in Rome average in the mid-60’s F (17-18°C), with temperatures a bit cooler in the evenings. Bring along a rain jacket and umbrella in case you’re there during one of the 9 average rainy days in November.

If you are visiting during U.S. Thanksgiving, enjoy hearty Italian meals as a twist on the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, with dishes like pasta carbonara and ossobuco. We stayed in San Gimignano for our November visit, with day trips to the larger cities. While this was a perfect choice for us, many prefer staying in a larger city such as Florence, taking day trips from there to explore the smaller hilltop towns.

6. Sicily, Italy

Sicily provides a warm Mediterranean getaway including rich history, culture, and architecture. Visit ancient Greek ruins in Agrigento, explore the bustling markets of Palermo, and enjoy the island’s diverse culinary offerings. The mild weather is perfect for an adventurous November holiday, though it will likely be too chilly for swimming. If you just have one week, we recommend flying into Palermo and exploring Western Sicily or flying into Catania to explore Eastern Sicily. Trying to see the whole island in one week requires more travel time than quality time spent enjoying the sites.

Average high temperatures in Sicily in November range from 59-66°F (15-19°C). You’ll find warmer temperatures along the coast, with cooler temperatures in the mountains. It can be rainy in November, but this is mixed with sunny days. Dress appropriately to enjoy visiting the many attractions without the crowds.

When picking a place to stay, be sure that it gets good reviews for its heating in winter. Buildings are not always well insulated in Sicily, which can lead to chilly evenings. There are many hotels with great heating, just check this carefully before booking.

7. Crete, Greece

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and a fantastic spot for those who want to combine historical exploration with beach relaxation. Discover Minoan palaces, like the famous Knossos, and enjoy long walks along the island’s extensive beaches. Watch or take part in the annual olive harvest, which typically runs from the end of October through mid-January. November is a great time to watch and learn about the Raki distilling process.

Temperatures are mild in November, perfect for exploring the island. High temperatures average in the high 60’s F (around 20°C). There are 6-8 days of rainfall on average, though many of these are smaller showers. The water may be a bit chilly for many people, though you will see hardy souls enjoying the water.

Many of the tourist resorts close during the off season, though you’ll find that the cities including Chania and Heraklion are open and vibrant year round. On November 11th, join in the celebration of Saint Minas in Heraklion. If you can add a few days in December, kick off your holiday season in Heraklion, which hosts a Christmas market usually starting on December 1st. It feels like the entire city is decorated, helping you get into the spirit of the holidays.

8. Split, Croatia

The ancient city of Split is a gem on the Adriatic coast. Explore the Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and enjoy the waterfront Riva promenade. Croatian cuisine, with its blend of Mediterranean and Slavic influences, is not to be missed, especially when paired with local wines. Don’t miss day trips to Krka National Park, Trogir, Brac, and Hvar during your stay. Some of the water activities have wrapped up for the season, though there are plenty of activities on land to enjoy.

Average high temperatures in Split in November are just under 60°F (15°C), with an average of 8 rainy days. Bring a rain jacket and head out to enjoy touring the many sites in Split.

Visiting the Christmas markets in Split is a unique experience. The market and stalls are spread amongst the squares around Diocletian’s Palace, with portions on the Riva promenade as well. The market typically kicks off right at the beginning of December, making this a great way to end to end your vacation and start the holidays.

9. London, England

Experience a vibrant November in London, where the holiday season is kicking into full gear. Explore famous landmarks like the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace, and don’t miss the stunning Christmas lights and decorations starting to adorn the city.

High temperatures in London in November average just 53°F (12°C). London averages 10 days of rain (or 20 days without rain looking positively).
