Where to Stay in Madeira Highlights
1. Funchal – The Vibrant Capital
Funchal is the vibrant capital of Madeira. Here you’ll find both historical charm and modern amenities. The city is built into the hills, with stunning views over the ocean. Funchal is the heart of Madeiran culture and cuisine. It is the perfect base for those who enjoy being in the center of everything. Funchal sits on the south side of the island, which tends to have less rain than the north side.
Within Funchal, there are quite a few options for where to stay.
- Stay right in old town to be right in the heart of the action. Keep in mind that cruise ships dock here, so this can get crowded.
- Staying further up on the hillside typically puts you walking distance to the center, but in quieter residential areas. This is our personal favorite location to stay when visiting Madeira in winter. The added benefit is easy access to the highways to other parts of the island.
- The third option is staying in the beach area/hotel zone. This is ideal for those who would like to spend much of their time at the beach, while being an easy (relatively flat) walk or bus ride in to old town.
Top Things to Do in Funchal
- Visit Mercado dos Lavradores: Explore this lively’ market that offers everything from exotic fruits to beautiful flowers and local crafts.
- Take the Cable Car to Monte Palace: Enjoy panoramic views over the city while riding the cable car, then visit the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens. To top off this adventure, take a Basket Ride back into town.
- Discover Madeira Wine at Blandy’s Wine Lodge: Learn about the storied history of Madeira’s famous fortified wine.
Recommended Funchal Accommodations
- Luxury: Reid’s Palace, a Belmond Hotel, sits on a cliff with 10 acres of subtropical gardens. - Unique location away from the crowds (moderate): OurMadeira Barbosas Village sits within the Monte Gardens, offering stunning views over the city, and easy access to the Monte Gardens and the cable car into town.
- Hostel with Ocean Views (budget): the Jaca Hostel Funchal offers a garden, bar, and sea views. Just a 9 minute walk to the beach, it has both dorm and individual rooms.
2. Porto Moniz – For Nature Lovers
Famous for its natural swimming pools carved out of lava rocks, Porto Moniz offers a more rugged and natural environment than Funchal. It’s ideal for nature lovers and those looking to escape the more tourist-centric spots. It sits on the north side of the island, which is more rainy than the south side.

São Vicente is nestled on the north coast of Madeira, and is conveniently located just off the main mid-island north/south roadway. It offers a quiet retreat away from the hustle and bustle of tourist hotspots. It’s renowned for its stunning volcanic caves and rich agricultural landscapes, making it a perfect spot for those interested in geology and serene natural settings. - Budget Close to the Sea: The Rum Inn is a well rated budget inn, located just 70 meters from the sea.
5. Caniço – The Quiet Corner
Caniço is a quieter alternative to Funchal, located on the East end of the island. It offers a blend of tourist facilities and local living. It’s particularly popular among divers and those looking for a more relaxed stay.
Top Things to Do in Caniço
- Scuba Dive at Garajau Marine Reserve: Discover diverse marine life in crystal-clear waters.

Oh, I definitely want to check out Porto Moniz. I love that it’s less touristy and has hiking!
We enjoyed visiting Porto Moniz for just those reasons (and the natural pools)!
Oooh there are so many good options! I keep seeing amaaaazing looking hikes on Maderia so I’d love to visit, but I had only really considered Funchal. It is cool to see there bunch of other options further into the wilderness! The scenery is sooo lovely!
Thanks, hope you can visit and try out some hikes!
Been “out there” in the Atlantic just once, in Lanzarote, and have Madeira, Tenerife, Azores and La Gomera on my wish list. Thank you for such detailed posts. They will make the research a little easier!
Madeira and Tenerife are 2 of our favorites, still need to explore La Gomera and more of the Azores too.
I wish I had visited Madeira when I was in Morocco. It looks like it would have been an easy trip.
They are fairly close together, but unfortunately I don’t believe there are any direct flights between Morocco and Madeira.
That road!!!
We stayed at the Reid Palace for my cousin’s wedding 20 years ago. Lovely place!
We’ve visited the Reid Palace for dinner and tea, but haven’t stayed there yet. It is truly a lovely spot with beautiful gardens and views.
Wow! So many great ideas here. That cable car looks stunning!
Thanks for the feedback!
Porto Moniz would be my first pick, I’d love to visit Madeira anytime soon, the nature looks so unique!
The nature is beautiful, hope you have a chance to visit.
It seems as though there’s a great mix of diverse places to stay in Madeira! I would love to visit.
Thanks for the feedback!
The triangle houses look so cute! I’m saving this post to come back to it again, great info!
Thanks, hope you have a chance to visit Madeira!
Lots of great options! I’d have a hard time picking a place to stay in Madeira.
Wow! It’s so hard to choose where to stay in Madeira! I’m guess a few stops would be best!
If you have the time to make a few stops, that would be ideal.
When I visited Madeira, I stayed in Funchal. Although the area is touristy and has many hotels, it was convenient and perfect for us.
We’ve enjoyed staying in the Funchal area and using this as a base, though we tend to stay outside of the downtown and beach areas (just our personal preference).
Madeira has lovely places to stay. Porto Moniz where the natural pools are sounds like my pick.
The natural pools and the whole North shore is incredibly lush with vegetation and scenic.
I´ve never been to Madeira but at least i now know where to stay! So many great places to stay in Madeira!
Thank you!
So many great places to stay in Madeira! I feel like there’s no shortage of great places to stay with a view which is something I always love when taking a trip.
I agree, I love having a view when we’re traveling!
Wow so many options! I think I’d like Santana the best because those houses are so cute! And I love hiking, so it would be good to stay close the trail.
Santana’s a great spot for hikers!
The cable cars look like you get spectacular views!
They do!
Madeira is definitely on my bucket list. it looks like such a beautiful island. This is such a helpful post to help in deciding which part of the island to stay in.
Thank you for the feedback!
Do you have a favorite place to stay that you would definitely go back to?
Our go to spot with kids is an apartment just up the hill from Funchal. It is a short walk down the hill to the old town area and the cable car, but in a quiet residential neighborhood. If there are only 2 of us, the Barbosas Village Funchal is perfect for us.
All great options to stay but I would pick Sao Vicente staying in the 18th century restored home.
We’ve explore São Vicente but haven’t had a chance to try this guesthouse. It looks amazing though.
Madeira is so high on my bucket list! Thank you for this and I definitely added Porto Moniz to my itinerary! I leave for Portugal in Nov. hopefully I can make it here!
The natural pools in Porto Moniz are such a fun stop. There are plenty of viewpoints to stop at on the way to Porto Moniz with incredible views of the north shore and waterfalls.

[…] Madeira, Portugal, with its breathtaking landscapes and charming towns, offers a wide range of accommodations to suit every preference and budget for your visit. Whether you’re looking for luxury resorts, cozy guesthouses, or something in between, Madeira has it all. For a four day winter stay, we’d recommend staying in one place, taking day trips to explore the far reaches of the island. The North side tends to be rainier than the South side in winter–keep this in mind when choosing Porto Moniz or São Vicente. We enjoyed staying just outside of downtown Funchal, as it let us stay in a local neighborhood with parking, all just an easy walk from town. Here are a few recommended places to stay in and around Funchal, while you can find our full set of recommendations on where to stay in Madeira here. […]
