Can You Swim in the Homestead Crater? Absolutely!
The Homestead Crater is a perfect spot for swimming year round. The mineral rich waters and warm temperatures make for a very relaxing swim. You don’t need to stay at the Homestead Resort to access the crater swim experience. Note that guests of all ages are allowed to participate. Children who are not yet potty trained must wear swim diapers.
What is the swim experience like?
- All guests wait outside until the exact time of their reservation (see reservation information below). Staff will open the door when it’s time to enter. The staff checks in each group one by one. They’ll ask for your last name and will look up your reservation.
- There are 4 changing stalls in the crater entry hallway. They strongly recommend arriving already dressed in bathing suits to ensure there are no delays getting in the water.
- There are no bathrooms or showers in the crater. There are bathrooms in the activities center nearby. We’d suggest to visit those before arriving at the crater.
- Life jackets are required for all swimmers and they offer plenty of sizes to choose from (infant to 5XL). Guests can bring their own marine grade life jackets if preferred.
- Snorkel and masks are provided for an extra fee (just select this when making a reservation). Guests can bring their own snorkels and masks too for no charge.
- Once in the water, the staff provides a history of the crater and answers everyone’s questions. When we visited, the staff member working was extremely knowledgeable, and part of the family that runs the crater experience.
- Towels are not provided. Bring your own, unless you are staying at the Homestead Resort (they will provide them in that case).
- About 10 minutes before the end of your swim session, they will ask you to get out, giving you time to change and leave before your session is over. Total swim time is about 40 minutes.
How Deep is the Water in Homestead Crater?
The water in the Homestead Crater reaches depths of about 65 feet at its deepest point, which is about 400 feet wide. An 8-14 foot layer of silt sits on the craters bottom. This depth makes it a popular spot not just for swimmers but also for scuba divers looking to explore the underwater environment and get certified. The clear, warm water offers visibility up to about 35 feet, allowing both novices and experienced divers to enjoy the sights without the chill of the typical dive spot.
What Activities are Offered at the Homestead Crater?
The Homestead Crater is not only a sight to behold but also has a number of activities. These include:
- Scuba Diving: Dive into the only warm scuba diving destination in the continental United States. They offer dive sessions for certified divers and also offer a Scuba Experience for beginners, Scuba Update, Scuba Certification. If you are certified but don’t have a dive buddy, sign up for a Dive Along (they’ll provide a dive buddy). There is no scuba diving solo in the crater.
- Paddleboard Yoga: For a truly unique experience, try yoga on a paddleboard in the buoyant, mineral-rich waters. This is a fun and relaxing workout. Reserve well in advance through Park City Yoga Adventures. You are not allowed to bring your own paddle board into the crater.

Utah is on my list so I’m definitely saving this for later!
This place sounds amazing. There’s Devil’s Den in Florida, and this sounds a lot like it, except the one in Florida is in cold water. Wow, paddleboard yoga in a crater sounds amazing!
I’ll have to try out the Devil’s Den too!
Yikes! I’ve never even heard of Homestead Crater! Looks fun!
It is definitely unique, and fun!
Oh wow, that looks like an amazing experience!!!
Thanks, it is!
This looks like the coolest place to swim in! That alone would be a reason for me to visit.
That’s why I visited, very cool place to go swimming.
That looks like an incredible experience!
Thanks, it is definitely a unique and fun experience.
It’s great to know gems like this when travelling. It looks amazing and would be great to have some down time there from a road trip.
It would be a great road trip stop to break up a long drive.
What a cool-sounding place! Wow!
(I take it the water temperature is in Fahrenheit?)
Yes, good point, the temperature is in Fahrenheit.
What a gorgeous natural attraction this is, and, it has mineral benefits by swimming in the waters. I like these kind of places.
The minerals in the water felt great; and, having no sulphur was a big perk.
Wow! I love that so many water activities are offered at the Homestead Crater. Thank you for the info.
Homestead Crater looks like such an amazing place to visit! Paddleboard yoga sounds like such a unique experience! I’d love to visit and see the crater in person. Thanks for the great guide!
Paddle board yoga is a lot of fun. I didn’t have a chance to do that in the crater, though swimming there was a fun experience.
I didn’t realize we had something like this in the United States. Whenever I see pictures like yours it’s in Mexico or somewhere tropical like that. So cool! Also important to know that you need a reservation
It’s incredibly close to Salt Lake City too, so easy to visit.
I love this. I am a frequent visitor to Utah, and did not know about this place. thanks for the info.
I had only heard about it for scuba diving certification, but there’s so much more to do.
I had no idea that you could do yoga on a paddleboard. I’d be afraid of falling into the water. But it sounds like a cool idea.
I think you have to assume you’ll end up in the water, and then you can be happily surprised if you don’t fall in.
How do I not know about this place?? It looks so fun. I’ve been to SLC and other parts of Utah…guess I need to plan another trip! Thanks for all the tips. Saving.
A lot of people in Colorado go to the crater for scuba certification, but this was my first time visiting. Quite a unique experience!
When we visited Park City in Utah we had no idea about the Homestead Crater. Now I am sorry we missed this. It would be great to plan enough time to actually swim in the warm water. We might actually plan to do a scuba dive! Such a cool beehive shape!
It is a really neat place and is a family run business too.
