Our 2025 travel year in review is a great source of 2026 travel inspiration too!
1. Watch the 2026 Solar Eclipse in Iceland, Greenland, or Spain/Portugal
On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the Moon’s shadow sweeps over the high Arctic before crossing Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, the Balearic Islands (Mallorca), and a tiny corner of northeastern Portugal. It’s the first total solar eclipse for mainland Europe since 1999, with a maximum totality of about 2 minutes 18 seconds just off Iceland’s west coast.
- Western Iceland – one of the few land-based locations in the full path of totality, though Iceland is frequently cloudy in August. With lodging heavily sold out (and extremely expensive), consider joining a tour for the best access, such as Lindblad Expeditions.
- Southern Greenland – for the adventurous explorer or expedition cruiser. Boat tours such as the Albatros Expeditions may be the best option here.
- Northern Spain & NE Portugal – including parts of Asturias, Castile and León, and tiny pockets of Portugal. Tour groups are basing themselves in hilltop castles to enjoy the view.
- Mallorca & Menorca: the very brief view of the eclipse is scheduled for 10 minutes before sunset, meaning that it will be challenging to see so low in the sky.
🎁 Gift Idea: Book an eclipse trip now (they’re already filling up!), or gift a flexible travel credit with a constellation-themed travel journal.

2. A Cultural Getaway: Basque Country & Northern Portugal
For the traveler who craves a deep cultural connection, consider gifting a trip that pairs the foodie charm of Spain’s Basque Country with the medieval beauty of Northern Portugal’s Guimarães.
In San Sebastián, they’ll enjoy pintxos crawls, cider tastings, and even Michelin-starred dining. In Guimarães, they’ll walk the birthplace of Portugal’s history—cobblestone streets, artisan workshops, and castles.
Bonus: If timed right, include solar eclipse viewing nearby or a stop in Porto and the Douro wine region.
📦 Gift Idea: A regional cookbook or a custom tasting tour voucher.

3. Creative & Culinary Escapes
Perfect for artists and foodies alike, these immersive workshops combine culture and creativity:
- Ceramics & Nature Retreat in one of Portugal’s Schist Villages, Cerdeira
- Traditional Cooking Classes in Bologna, Lisbon, and Oaxaca
- Tile-Making Workshops in Lisbon (one of our favorite souvenirs!)
- Mosaic-Making Workshop in Rome
- Photography Workshop at Crested Butte’s Wildflower Festival (Colorado)
- Glass-Blowing Workshop in Murano (Italy) or Sedona (Arizona)
- Chocolate-Making in Belgium or a Chocolatarium Chocolate Tour Experience in Edinburgh
🎁 Pair it with: A sketchbook, artisan apron, or local cookbook.

4. Off‑the‑Grid Adventures in Greenland, the Faroe Islands & the Azores
Escape the ordinary and gift an adventure in:
- Greenland – Kayak fjords, spot glaciers, explore the Jewels of Nuuk, and watch the 2026 eclipse from the ice
- Faroe Islands – Puffins, waterfalls, remote cliff hikes
- The Azores – Portugal’s volcanic archipelago is perfect for hiking, canyoning, crater-lake kayaking, and sustainable travel
🎁 Great for: Nature lovers, couples, and bucket-list chasers.
🎁 Gift Tip: Look for expedition tour vouchers or eco‑adventure packages for 2026 that can be given as gift certificates.

5. Wellness & Outdoor Adventure Retreats
Combine wellness with nature in these stunning locations:
- Thermal spa resorts in Slovenia
- Jungle yoga retreats in Costa Rica
- Forest cabins and hot springs in the Pacific Northwest
- Iron-rich hot springs in the Azores Islands
- Mountain trekking with Ayurvedic treatments in Nepal or Bhutan
🌿 Great for: Parents, caregivers, and burned-out friends who need a break.

6. Offbeat Adventures in Unexpected Places
Looking for holiday gift experience ideas that offer something different from the usual bucket-list tourist spots? These off-the-beaten-path destinations combine authentic culture with adventure and nature.
- Georgia (the country) – Visit the dramatic Caucasus Mountains, explore ancient hilltop churches, and enjoy wine-tasting in one of the oldest wine regions in the world.
- Lombok, Indonesia – Surf, dive, and trek to waterfalls on this quieter alternative to Bali. Bonus: Climb Mount Rinjani for sunrise views above the clouds.
- Jordan’s Dana Biosphere Reserve – A little-known hiking gem with dramatic cliffs, Bedouin hospitality, and wilderness lodges on the edge of the desert.
- The Falkland Islands – Spot penguins, hike rugged coastlines, and explore untouched wildlife in a remote, windswept corner of the world.
- Peru - Take an Amazon River Cruise, enjoying the local culture and seeing sloths and pink dolphins.
- Cycle or hike through Portugal's Alentejo – Take a cycling tour through the Alentejo, with its abundance of culture, vineyards, and gastronomy. Or, hike the Fisherman's Trail along the windswept Alentejo coast.
- North Dakota’s Badlands, USA – Wide-open skies, bison sightings, solitude, and wildlife photography in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
- Sandboarding at Great Sand Dunes, Colorado – The closest thing to desert surfing in North America
- Ice climbing in Solheimajokull, Iceland or in Ouray, Colorado – Perfect for the thrill-seeker in winter
- Hiking the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska
🎁 Gift Tip: Pair with a National Parks pass, hiking gear, or a hand-drawn map of their next adventure.

- Fado Show + Dinner In Lisbon’s historic Alfama district.
📦 Easy to gift: Most venues offer printable or digital gift certificates.

9. Volunteer Travel That Makes a Difference
For the traveler who wants to make a difference, consider a volunteer experience with organizations that prioritize ethics and local impact, such as:
- GIVE Volunteers – Focused on sustainability and community-led development (trips can include Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Tanzania, Zanzibar Thailand, Laos, and USA).
- International Volunteer HQ – Affordable, transparent global programs.
- Adventures in Preservation – Restore world heritage with hands-on projects, including cultural and architectural heritage conservation.
Keep in mind that most volunteer travel does come with a cost, in addition to the travel to and from the site.
🎁 Wrap With: A travel journal, world travel map, or language-learning subscription

10. Unique Places to Stay: Sleep Somewhere Magical
Make the overnight part of the adventure with these unforgettable stays:

This was an awesome post! I love how you’ve moved beyond traditional “things” and focused on creating meaningful moments instead. The suggestion about giving a cooking class or scenic outdoor adventure really resonated with me, those kinds of experiences make for memories, not just items. Looking forward to using some of these ideas for my loved ones this year. Wishing the author and everyone reading a wonderful and festive holiday season!

BEST post! I love gifting experiences!! My top wishes from your list are the culinary tours and the train travel somewhere in Europe!! Hoping for both experiences sometime this decade!
Hope you have a chance to try both!
Totally agree with you. I always give my boyfriend a trip somewhere for his birthday.
Glad to hear it!

Thank you for the ideas!!!! I have been shifting my focus related to gift giving, from material possessions to experiences. However, travel has not been something I thought about!
We’ve shifted to all kinds of experiences, not just travel, but it is a great option!
Sending this list to Santa. What a great set of ideas! I got lots of inspiration for 2026!
Thank you for the feedback!
What lovely ideas! In this day and age when everyone pretty much has everything, experiences like these are a much nicer gift. Will definitely bear them in mind!
Thank you for the feedback!
Such great ideas!! The solar eclipse in Iceland or visiting Greenland would be at the top of my list!!
Hope you have a great travel year in 2026.
What the amazing set of the gifts! I would love to get a scenic railway journey. Thanks for inspiration and ideas!
I’m happy to see that there are new railway journeys available for 2026–definitely something to look forward to.
I love this idea of gifting experiences to loved ones instead of more “stuff” that they don’t need. I always feel the most treasured present is a memory that you keep forever. (I too want to stay in a cave in Matera!)
Hope you have a chance to stay in one of Matera’s caves!
Experiences make the best gifts!! I would love to receive any of these, especially the train journeys. The Orient Express is my dream trip!
Hope you can take the Orient Express, it sounds amazing!
Wow! Yes Please. I want someone to give me all of these! LOL. Slipping this post into my husbands feed… 🙂
Thanks for the feedback! Hope you can explore some of these spots.
Lovely ideas! I recently did a cooking class in Thailand, and it was so interesting. I would definitely like my loved ones to experience that.
Glad you enjoyed the cooking class experience as much as we have. We highly recommend taking these when traveling.
I definitely subscribe to travel as a gift, and I loved many of the ideas here. Will be coming back to this article often I think. Very inspiring.
Thank you for the feedback! We keep a growing list of travel experiences we’d like to take part in, and are always interested in adding to our list.
A train ride for the holidays would be such a fantastic gift! Gonna send these to the TOP of Santa’s list this year hahah
Great plan!
You’ve included so many great ideas! I would love to go on a Christmas market tour 🙂 Maybe next year.
Hope you have a chance to take your Christmas market tour.
What a wonderful list of travel-inspired gift ideas! I couldn’t agree more that the best gifts are experiences, not things. The idea of watching the 2026 solar eclipse in Iceland or Spain sounds absolutely magical — that’s one for the bucket list. I also love the mention of scenic train journeys; there’s something so peaceful and timeless about exploring the world by rail. This post really inspires me to give (and plan!) more meaningful adventures instead of traditional presents.
Thank you for the feedback! We enjoy giving (and receiving) travel experiences. These often mean time spent together as a family (or with friends) experiencing new places.
Some great experiences among these. I love getting an experience as a gift ot giving it to someone. The joy of looking out to something special.
Agreed! Having an experience to look forward to (and then enjoy) is such a wonderful gift!
A cultural getaway to Basque Country for one please, thank you!
There is still more of the Basque Country we’d like to explore too. Such a beautiful area!
These are great travel ideas for unique experiences all around the world. They would make great gifts but they are also inspiring me too! I didn’t even realize people traveled for solar eclipses.
Glad to inspire your travel too (as well as for gifts)!
