Mid-mountain dining is a must-do for any Crested Butte ski trip. During the day, skiers can take the Red Lady Express to this cozy retreat for gourmet food and craft cocktails, surrounded by stunning mountain views. Fat biking is a fun and unique way to explore Crested Butte’s winter landscape. Many trails near town, like Slate River Road, are ideal for this adventure. We’ve rented our fat bikes from Big Al’s Bicycle Heaven in town on our past trips. Crested Butte Sports also rents fat bikes at the base of the mountain. Glide over packed snow for a thrilling ride that’s sure to add excitement to your ski trip.

A few of our favorite spots to stop in while in downtown are:

Crested Butte’s dining options rival its winter adventures. A few of our favorite Crested Butte dining experiences (in addition to Uley’s Cabin mentioned above) are:

Where to Stay in Crested Butte
One of the main choices in Crested Butte is whether to stay in town or on the mountain. They are only a 10 minute drive apart, and well connected by the bus. We personally prefer to stay in town, making it easy to walk to shops, restaurants, concerts, and to some of the trails (such as the lower loop). In winter, this makes for easy cross country skiing as well. Others prefer to stay in Mt. Crested Butte, for closer access to the chairlifts, alpine skiing in winter, and some of the great trails. This is truly a personal preference and both areas have their highlights.
There are a wide range of places to stay in Crested Butte, ranging from hostels to B&B’s to luxury villas. Here are some of our top recommendations:
Vaquera House | Wonderful upscale rooms with terrace, garden, free bikes, and an on-site restaurant with room service. Guests can play tennis and pool. |
Public House Lofts | The Public House has large modern suites located right on the main street, with a restaurant and bar conveniently downstairs. The shuttle to the ski mountain stops just across the street. |
3 Bedroom In Town Home | 3 bedroom fully renovated vacation rental on Whiterock Avenue in town. Easy walking distance to all that the town has to offer from this beautiful home. |
Purple Mountain Bed & Breakfast | Cute B&B conveniently located in town, with available breakfast, garden, hot tub, and free bikes. |
Crested Butte Hostel | Well rated hostel with both dorm rooms and private rooms most with shared bathrooms. Conveniently located to downtown and to the buses running to the mountain. |

I tend to stay indoors in winter, but fat tire biking sounds interesting. Not sure if there’s such a thing around where I live. I’ll have to resesarch that.
Fat biking has been growing in popularity, especially in areas where it snows.
I don’t know how to ski so it’s good to know there are plenty of options for people like me!
Crested Butte looks and sounds like a fun winter destination. Would love to explore the diverse hot springs, the museum and go on a cross-country trail.
The cross country trails are some of our favorites in Colorado, one of the reasons we keep returning to Crested Butte despite the drive.
Incredible guide – a sleigh ride would be like a dream!
Ooh a horse-drawn sleigh ride sounds like so much fun. The fat bike might be interesting to try in the snow too.
Both great choices!
As a non-skier, I love this. I often think I wouldn’t be welcome at places that focus so heavily on skiing/snowboarding, but you’re right there are a lot of things to do other than that. I’d love to have a yurt dinner and relax in a hot spring!
The yurt dinners are such a unique experience; pairing that with a hot springs visit sounds great!
I love all the great options for things to do in the winter in Crested Butte. We no longer are skiing on our winter trips. But we would certainly try other outdoor activities. And then plan a spa day to recover!
There are so many things to do that are not skiing!
The mountains are so beautiful. Great post! Thanks for sharing.
lovely post! I would love to snowshoe someday. so many other activities to look out for.
Thanks for the feedback, hope you have a chance to try them out!
I have only snow shoed twice and it was so hard! Ha Ha. but i could get into a sleigh ride and maybe also try fat tire biking. That looks fun and your photos are so pretty.
Thanks, Crested Butte is such a beautiful place most any time of year!
This round-up of activities is perfect for someone like me. I lived in Colorado for years, but I didn’t prefer downhill skiing. Thanks for thinking of the rest of us who want a different mountain experience during the wintertime.
Thank you for the feedback! I enjoy downhill skiing, but also enjoy exploring the other activities beyond the slopes.
The snowcat ride to a multi-course dinner sounds like so much fun! Sign me up for that. I also love snowshoeing, so that’d be great. I’m not a skier, so I love alternative ideas like these.
There’s plenty to do for non-skiers here!
Crested Butte looks like a fun town, and I can see myself sipping coffee at Camp4Coffee! And I love the old buildings – right out a Western! But I’d rather visit in summer (or spring or fall) because I hate cold weather.
I’d suggest visiting in summer of fall then. Spring is warmer though still snowy. Summer has incredible wildflowers and fall has incredible foliage to enjoy.
THANK YOU!!! As someone who can only ski…a max of half a day haha, I appreciate knowing about other options!
Skiing in the morning and exploring other activities in the afternoon is one of my favorite ways to enjoy a ski vacation.
The town is so pretty and it’s awesome to enjoy sunset and
snowy trails..
Thanks for the feedback!

Oooh fat biking looks so fun in that wintery wonderland! Great resources – thanks for all the tips!
Thank you for the feedback! Fat biking is a great choice!
Crested Butte is the perfect destination! I’d love to check out downtown, go fat biking or even a sleigh ride. Definitely going to visit Colorado in the future and I’ll add Crested Butte to my list.
Crested Butte is one of our favorite ski destinations (and summer wildflower and fall foliage spots too). We’ve skied the majority of the ski areas in Colorado but always go back to this one.
I think a sleigh ride sounds delightful, especially during the Christmas season.
It is a great Christmas season activity!
Everything sounds great but that sleigh ride sounds wonderful! I’ve never been on one before. Going to put this on my list! thanks
A sleigh ride is definitely worth doing at least once!
