We flew Bark Air from Teterboro to Madrid and unexpectedly returned home on K9 Jets from Porto to Teterboro after an itinerary change from Lisbon. Experiencing both luxury pet airlines on the same trip gave us a unique opportunity to compare them side by side. While both companies make international travel with large dogs in the cabin possible, Bark Air stood out for its exceptional customer service, proactive guidance through the paperwork process, and genuinely pet-first onboard experience. K9 Jets provided a comfortable flight and professionally handled our airport change, but its communication and overall focus on the pets fell short of our expectations for a premium-priced luxury pet airline.
If you’re deciding between Bark Air and K9 Jets, this guide compares the differences that mattered most to us—from booking and preparing for the trip to the onboard experience—so you can decide which airline is the better fit for you and your pet. Note that, while both airlines have dog-focused names, they have policies for accommodating cats and other small domestics animals.

Both airlines require documentation to ensure pets can legally enter their destination country.
Expect to provide at least:
- Current vaccination records
- Required health certificates
- Import paperwork for your destination
- Advance information about your dog’s size and temperament
Important: this is not a comprehensive list. Because requirements vary by country, be sure to do your research and contact the airline for the latest requirements and process for your destination.

Pre-Flight Experience
One of the biggest differences between Bark Air and K9 Jets became apparent long before we ever stepped onto an airplane.
Bark Air Pre-Flight Experience
Booking Bark Air felt more like working with a concierge than purchasing an airline ticket. From the moment we confirmed our reservation, their team guided us through every step of preparing for international pet travel. This started with a call to talk through our pet’s personality and to explain to us the logistics and pet requirements for the flight. They provided clear timelines for scheduling veterinary appointments, obtaining USDA endorsements, completing import paperwork, pet-friendly hotels and taxis, and ensuring everything would be ready before departure.
Whenever we had questions, responses were quick, thorough, and reassuring. They reviewed our paperwork at each stage of the process, giving us plenty of time to address any concerns. We never felt like we were navigating the complicated paperwork process alone.

K9 Jets Pre-Flight Experience
Our experience with K9 Jets was noticeably different.
Before booking, communication was excellent. Questions about routes and availability were answered quickly, making it easy to decide whether the flight would work for us.
After booking, however, communication became much more difficult. We often found it challenging to reach someone by phone or email, leaving multiple messages and emails before finally receiving a response. When there was an urgent flight change, we were able to schedule a 15 minute call with a customer service representative.
K9 Jets provided a joint flight briefing before departure but did not actively guide us through the preparation process for international travel. We overlooked a document (our mistake) and were notified the afternoon before the flight (leading to us running to the vet before they closed for the day). If you’ve flown internationally with a pet before, this may not be a concern. However, for first-time travelers, Bark Air’s hands-on approach significantly reduced stress and gave us confidence that we had every required document prepared correctly.
Airport Experience
Both airlines operate primarily from private aviation terminals (FBOs), eliminating long security lines, crowded terminals, and the stress associated with commercial airports. Being able to arrive shortly before departure and board directly from a quiet private terminal is a huge advantages of either service.
Our flight from Porto to Teterboro did originate at Porto’s main airport terminal. The passengers and pets went through customs, though there was no line, and they were processed in a closed area (no other passengers).

When Plans Change
One of the biggest tests of an airline is how it responds when things don’t go according to plan.
Our return journey on K9 Jets was originally scheduled to depart from Lisbon but was ultimately moved to Porto. A few weeks before the flight, we were notified that the flight would be departing from Porto instead. To their credit, K9 Jets arranged complimentary private transportation from the Lisbon area to Porto Airport, making the additional drive fairly easy.
Where we felt the experience could have been improved was communication.
The initial notification explaining the group transfer was sent by email, but unfortunately landed in our spam folder. Because no follow-up phone call or confirmation was made to ensure passengers had received this important information, we didn’t learn about the airport change until the week of departure, when we were contacted about arranging an individual transfer.
The transportation itself was excellent. We simply wish there had been a more proactive communication process for such a significant itinerary change.
We didn’t experience a large-scale change like this with Bark Air, so cannot compare this area.

Luxury Pet Airline Onboard Experience
Both Bark Air and K9 Jets provide something commercial airlines simply can’t: dogs remain in the cabin with their families throughout the flight. The quieter cabin, fewer passengers, slower pace, and attentive crew created an environment that felt remarkably calm.
However, we felt there was a noticeable difference in philosophy.
Bark Air Onboard Experience
Everything about Bark Air felt intentionally designed around canine comfort. This dog-oriented service may be Bark Air’s greatest strength.
The crew regularly offered dogs water throughout the flight and encouraged them to stay hydrated. Small treats were also available, helping make a long transatlantic journey feel more familiar and comfortable. They offered “chomp-agne” for the dogs, a broth our dog quite enjoyed.
Rather than simply allowing dogs onboard, Bark Air actively cared for the dogs throughout the journey. They provided a blanket, which came in very handy throughout the flight. Our dog still plays with the dog toys they gave him, and we enjoy the dog portrait they gave us of our dog.
The cabin was stocked with supplies should accidents occur, although the calm environment seemed to help many dogs settle in surprisingly well. The flight attendant, in addition to serving food and keeping everyone safe, also organized some activities to keep the people (and dogs) entertained. This made the time go by much more quickly.

K9 Jets Onboard Experience
Our K9 Jets flight was comfortable, professional, and operated smoothly.
However, one difference stood out immediately.
Dogs were not permitted to eat or drink during the flight, except for a few small treats. In our case, they also didn’t permit water during the drive from Lisbon to Porto, adding 3 hours of no water to this policy.
We understand there may be operational or safety reasons behind this policy, but after experiencing Bark Air’s approach, we preferred allowing dogs access to water during a flight lasting many hours.
For us, this was one of the clearest examples of the difference in policies between Bark Air and K9 Jets.

Human Comfort
For the humans, both flights were comfortable.
The private terminal experience, spacious seating, relaxed atmosphere, and absence of commercial airport stress made both journeys significantly more enjoyable than flying commercially.
Both airlines served 2 light meals on the flights, and had champagne and Mimosas available for the humans.
While both flights had wifi onboard, it was only accessible for a limited time.

Luxury Pet Airline: Our Verdict
Both Bark Air and K9 Jets are transforming what’s possible for families traveling internationally with large dogs. We’re genuinely grateful that both companies are making this type of travel possible.
That said, after experiencing both during the same trip, we would choose Bark Air again without hesitation.
At $9,000+ per passenger, these flights represent a significant investment. At that price point, we believe you’re paying for far more than transportation—you’re paying for expertise, communication, peace of mind, and a travel experience that keeps your dog’s well-being at the center of every decision.
For us, Bark Air delivered on all of those expectations.
Their team guided us through every stage of preparing for international travel, from veterinary appointments and USDA paperwork to travel-day logistics. Onboard, the experience continued with a crew that actively cared for the dogs, regularly offering water, providing small treats. They created an environment that felt genuinely designed around their comfort rather than simply accommodating them.
K9 Jets ultimately got us home safely and deserves credit for arranging transportation from the Lisbon area to Porto after our departure airport changed. Once we arrived at the airport, the flight itself was comfortable and professionally operated.
Where the experiences diverged for us was in the details. Communication became much more difficult after booking with K9 Jets, the preparation process was largely left to us, and the onboard policies around food and water made the flight feel less focused on the dogs’ comfort. None of these issues prevented a successful trip, but together they created an experience that didn’t quite meet our expectations at this price point.
If Bark Air and K9 Jets were both operating the same route on the same day, we would gladly pay more to fly Bark Air again.
