Level8 Test: Best Carry-On Luggage Roller

LEVEL8 Adventurer Classic Review: Best Carry-On Luggage Roller for International Travel

Home » Blog » Travel Tips » LEVEL8 Adventurer Classic Review: Best Carry-On Luggage Roller for International Travel

Finding the best carry-on luggage roller for international travel is harder than it sounds. Many suitcases look good online, but once you start traveling with them—rolling across city streets, lifting them into overhead bins and onto trains, or packing them for multi-city trips—the weaknesses become obvious. We had been looking for a new carry-on for a while, specifically a rugged roller that would meet airline carry-on requirements while still being durable enough for international travel. When LEVEL8 asked us to test their Adventurer Classic 20-inch carry-on, we decided to test it on a multi-stage upcoming trip, rather than a simple at-home review.

First Impressions of our LEVEL8 Carry-On

The version we tested is the LEVEL8 Top Opening Carry-On Expandable (20-inch, black) that’s available on Amazon. This version differs slightly from the Adventurer carry-on sold on the LEVEL8 website, which features a distinctive wide handle design. The model we used instead focuses on a top-opening design and expandable capacity, which makes packing and access easier in tight travel situations.

Our LEVEL8 Adventurer Classic 20-inch carry-on luggage roller arrived quickly. Inside the shipping box, the suitcase was protected and wrapped in a soft dust bag. We plan to store the roller in this bag between trips to keep the shell in good condition.

Right away, the suitcase gave the impression of being well built and thoughtfully designed. The all-black finish is sleek and understated, and the hard shell feels durable while remaining lightweight at 8.3 pounds (3.7 kg). For a carry-on designed to move through airports, city streets, and transportation hubs, that balance of durability and manageable weight is important.

One feature that immediately stood out was the top-opening design. Instead of opening like a traditional clamshell suitcase that requires space on both sides, the Adventurer Classic opens upward from the top. This makes it much easier to access items in tight hotel rooms, train compartments, or when the suitcase is standing upright.

We also noticed how smoothly the spinner wheels rolled. Even just testing the suitcase around the house, the wheels moved easily and the suitcase stayed stable while standing upright. This was an encouraging sign for the airports and cobblestone streets we planned to test it on during our upcoming trip.

The exterior laptop compartment was another feature that stood out right away. Having quick access to a laptop or documents without opening the main suitcase compartment makes airport security and travel days much easier.

Overall, our first impression was that the Adventurer Classic felt like luggage designed for real travel: practical, durable, and built with thoughtful features that simplify travel.

How We Tested It (Real Travel, Not a Studio Review)

We intentionally used this luggage roller in real-life travel situations where many carry-ons fail. We were relocating for a long stay in Europe with our dog, and wanted to have our large dog fly in the cabin. This resulted in a road trip to New York, a flight from there to Madrid, and ultimately another road trip to Lisbon.

Stage 1 — Road Trip (Denver → New York City)

Our first test for this carry-on was a road trip from Denver to New York City. This was not our normal slow-paced travel style. We spent 3 days driving, staying at a different hotel each night. We used the LEVEL8 Carry-On Luggage Roller as our daily hotel bag, leaving the other luggage locked in the car. This was packed with the items we needed to bring in and out of the hotel each night.

Our goal was to test the:

  • packing efficiency,
  • accessibility, and
  • interior organization.

Stage 2 — International Flight (Newark → Lisbon → Madrid on TAP Air Portugal)

I flew solo from Newark to Madrid on TAP Portugal (via Lisbon), while my husband and dog enjoyed Bark Air. While the overhead bins on international flights tend to be quite spacious, regional or domestic flights within Europe usually have very tight space restrictions. Many carry-ons that fit in the overhead bins in the US are gate checked for smaller, regional flights in Europe. What we tested:

  • Fit in overhead bins, both on international and regional flights;
  • Ease of maneuvering through the airport, on and off trains and buses,
  • Weight for lifting the carry-on to put it in the overhead bin and carrying it up and down airplane stairs.

Upon arrival in Lisbon, we used stairs to get on and off the planes. It was easy to carry the bag down the stairs and on and off the bus. I had to hold on to the carry-on while the bus was moving. The wheels roll so smoothly that it would have been easy for the bag to roll away as the bus veered around corners.

Stage 3 — Iberian Peninsula Road Trip (Madrid → Mérida → Lisbon)

We leased a car in Madrid for our long European stay. As with our road trip across the US, we used the LEVEL8 Adventure Carry-On as our bag to bring in for the night, leaving the other luggage in the car.

While we stayed in a very modern apartment near the Madrid airport, we stayed on a pedestrian street in Mérida. We had a private garage to use down the street from the apartment, so we rolled our carry-on across the historic streets and cobblestones to our apartment. This is exactly the environment where most luggage wheels fail, especially when putting a heavy backpack on top. We had no issues getting our carry-on into and out of the apartment.

Next up, we plan to use the carry-on on train trips and buses—two environments where the best carry-on luggage roller really proves its value.

Airline Size Compatibility (Why This Matters More Than You Think)

One of the main reasons we wanted a new suitcase was to ensure we had no issues with airline carry-on compliance.

LEVEL8 Adventurer 20″ Carry-On Compatibility

  • Most carriers now enforce roughly 21.7 x 15.7 x 9 inches (55 x 40 x 23 cm) limits, including wheels and handles.
    Unexpanded: safe for most international flights (measures approximately 21.6 × 14.6 × 9 inches (55 × 37 × 23 cm).
  • Expanded (+5L): great for the return trip, but may need to be checked on smaller regional aircraft.
  • Always check the carry-in luggage regulations for your air carrier and flight category before you go.

Our Airline Size Compatibility Results

We packed the Adventure Carry-On Luggage Roller using the standard setup (not expanded) for testing on our flights.

The first leg of the trip, from Newark to Lisbon, there were spacious overhead bins, and I was able to store both my carry-on and my hiking day pack. The light weight of the carry-on made this easy to lift and put in the overhead bin, despite the fact that I had filled it with clothes, shoes, and camera equipment.

The second leg from Lisbon to Madrid was on a fairly small plane. The Adventure Carry-On Luggage Roller fit nicely (though more snuggly) into the overhead bin (while my backpack went under the seat).

For most international flights, though, the standard size strikes a good balance between capacity and airline compatibility—one of the reasons it performs well as one of the best carry-on luggage rollers for international travel.

Spinner Wheels That Actually Work (Including Cobblestones)

This is the single most important feature in a best carry-on luggage roller: the wheels.

Airport floors are smooth, but many travel destinations are not. Due to a tight connection in Lisbon, I had a chance to test running through the airport with my backpack and Adventure Carry-On Luggage Roller. It worked like a charm, with my backpack resting on the roller. It was easy to turn corners and to navigate ramps and stairs.

During our long trip, we rolled this suitcase over:

  • airport terminals
  • sidewalks
  • hotel corridors
  • historic stone streets

The 360° spinner wheels handled these surfaces surprisingly well. Instead of dragging the suitcase behind us, we were able to roll it upright with minimal effort. For travelers exploring European cities or historic districts, that maneuverability makes a noticeable difference. This alone makes it one of the most practical carry-ons we’ve used in Europe.

Important note: The spinner wheels roll so easily that the suitcase can easily roll away if it is placed on a slanted floor (or moving bus/train).

Expandable Storage & Smart Organization

Despite its compact size, the Adventurer Classic provides more storage capacity than I would have expected at first glance. The interior layout includes compartments that help keep clothing and accessories organized, while the expandable section adds extra room when needed.

The laptop compartment also turned out to be extremely convenient. On travel days, being able to access electronics from the top entry enabled quick airport security access, easy document storage, and easy unpacking at checkpoints

We highly recommend using compression packing cubes to maximize the space and to keep your clothes organized. In the photo below, the unexpanded suitcase was filled with:

  • Laptop and a number of documents
  • 2 pairs of shoes (trail running shoes and sandals)
  • 1 compression cube filled with clothes
  • 1 fleece jacket
  • Toiletries

The unexpanded bag holds about 45 liters, and there was room to spare. When we expanded the bag to the roughly 50 liters, we were able to add a small blanket, packable winter puffer coat, and a few additional clothes.

Pro Tip: When packing the expanded bag, we found it helpful to pull up on the suitcase sides (extending them to the full expanded space).

TSA Lock = Travel Peace of Mind

While we prefer carry-on travel, occasionally airlines require gate checking a bag of this size on small aircraft. This was the one feature we didn't test in a real life scenario, since we never checked the bag. We did try the lock at home and it worked smoothly.

The built-in TSA lock means:

  • you don't need to carry extra locks,
  • the bag is secure if checked,
  • allows for faster inspections.

Hard-Sided vs Soft-Sided (Our Previous Carry-On)

We previously used a soft-sided carry-on. After switching, the advantages were immediate, especially when we arrived to rainy weather in Europe.

Hard-sided benefits:

  • resists weather,
  • keeps shape,
  • protects electronics (we packed a laptop and camera (with lenses) in this carry-on luggage roller for airline travel),
  • stands upright (no issues with this tipping over),
  • easier packing.

Soft luggage still has its place, but for international travel the hard shell is simply more reliable.

A Note on the LEVEL8 Wide-Handle Adventurer

LEVEL8 also offers another version of the Adventurer carry-on on their website that features the brand’s wide-handle design. This version maximizes interior packing space by moving the handle system toward the sides of the suitcase.

While the Adventurer Classic we tested uses a traditional handle layout, travelers looking for maximum packing capacity may want to consider the wide-handle version as well.

Final Verdict on the Best Carry-On Luggage Roller

If you travel internationally, take trains, walk cities, or want one carry-on roller that works across every type of trip, the LEVEL8 Adventure 20-inch carry-on is an excellent choice. It combines capacity, durability, and maneuverability while staying within airline limits.
