Is Vila Franca do Campo Worth Visiting?
Vila Franca do Campo is definitely worth visiting, with its wonderful blend of authentic Azorean charm, history, adventure, and stunning natural beauty. Located on the southern coast of São Miguel, Vila Franca do Campo is just a 25 minute drive from Ponta Delgada. This former capital of São Miguel is known for the volcanic islet just off shore, its beautiful hilltop church, Nossa Senhora da Paz, and for the many boating adventures leaving from the town’s marina.
Vila Franca do Campo was the first capital of São Miguel. It was also one of the earliest settlements established after the Portuguese colonized the Azores. It was a leader in agriculture, trade, and governance. In 1522, when a devastating earthquake and landslide destroyed much of the town, the capital was moved to Ponta Delgada. The community of Vila Franca do Campo rebuilt and remains a vital hub for fishing, farming, and culture.
In addition to taking a day trip to Vila Franca do Campo, consider using it as a base for exploring the island. It’s much quieter than Ponta Delgada. It’s close to major sights like Furnas, Lagoa do Fogo, and Caloura, but without the crowds of the capital.

Top Things to Do in Vila Franca do Campo São Miguel
1. Visit the Islet of Vila Franca
The iconic volcanic islet of Vila Franca sits just off the coast of Vila Franca do Campo and is one of the top attractions in the Azores. The collapsed volcanic crater forms a natural circular lagoon, perfect for snorkeling and kayaking when it’s open. Because the islet is a protected nature reserve, access is limited at various points during the year. At times, you are not allowed to snorkel inside the islet or walk on the island. Even when that’s the case, you can still boat, kayak, or snorkel just outside the island.
We took an amazing kayak tour to the islet in April, and were lucky enough to be able to walk around the island (except a restricted area). We were not allowed to snorkel in the islet, but we were able to snorkel just outside of the opening. Be sure to check with your tour operator or boat rental company on the latest status, as the regulations change frequently.

How to Visit the Islet of Vila Franca?
There are a number of options for visiting the islet of Vila Franca. The one we chose and we’d highly recommend is by taking a kayak tour. Kayaking to and around the islet and it’s nooks and crannies on the outside was almost as much fun as visiting the islet itself.
If an ocean kayak isn’t your style, consider a few other highly rated tour options that visit the islet include:
- Islet snorkeling and bird watching tour,
- Whale watching and boat tour with a marine biologist,
- Biologist eco-boat tour around the islet

2. Explore the Historic Town Center
Wander the cobbled streets, visit local shops, and admire the architecture around the town square. The size of the town is quite manageable. Don’t miss seeing the Igreja de São Miguel and Igreja de Senhor Bom Jesus da Pedra (churches in town) for a taste of the town’s religious and cultural history.

3. Viewpoint at Nossa Senhora da Paz
Most people choose to drive up to this peaceful hilltop chapel and enjoy panoramic views over the town. This is included with quite a few tours that go to Furnas and its wonderful hot springs. The vistas over the coastline and islet are stunning! The dramatic staircase and blue-and-white tilework make it a favorite photography spot—especially at sunset.
We chose to walk up to the church from town (3.4 miles or 5.5 km roundtrip from the marina). This isn’t a hiking trail per se; rather, you walk along the road for this steady uphill hike. Though the hike itself isn’t too interesting, the views, especially on the way down, were amazing.

4. Relax on the Local Beaches
Enjoy the golden sands and calm waters of Praia Vinha d’Areia. Since we stayed in town, we enjoyed a swim at the beach nearly every afternoon after exploring the island. The larger stretch of beach at Água d’Alto is close by. Both beaches are family-friendly and offer great swimming, with casual places to eat just off the beaches.

5. Try Queijadas da Vila
One of the things to explore when in São Miguel is the queijada unique to each location on the island. Queijadas da Vila are sweet cheese tarts, unique to Vila Franca do Campo. Visit the historic Queijadas do Morgado bakery, close to the marina, is the perfect spot to pick up a coffee and freshly made queijada.

6. Go Whale and Dolphin Watching
The waters off Vila Franca are prime territory for spotting marine life, such as whales and dolphin. Several local tour operators offer tours to see the wildlife. Some are guided by marine biologists, providing a wonderful educational opportunity. Others wildlife viewing with a stop at the islet or snorkeling.

7. Visit Jardim Dr. António da Silva Cabral
The Jardim Dr. António da Silva Cabral is a small, tranquil and historic garden just inside town, in front of the old convent. Filled with tropical trees, flowers, ducks, and butterflies, it offers benches and a serene setting for a mid‑day reset. The garden honors Dr. António da Silva Cabral, a former mayor and physician. While it doesn’t compare to some of Ponta Delgada’s larger gardens, it is a great spot for a leisurely stroll, especially if you’re staying at the neighboring Pousada.

8. Take a Sunset Coastal Walk Toward Água d’Alto
A wonderful way to end your day in Vila Franca do Campo is to take a leisurely walk along the coast from the town center toward Água d’Alto. Take time to stop at rocky outcrops and viewpoints to admire the glowing islet.

In addition to the views, we enjoyed the street art scattered around town and next to the coast.

- Black Whale Restaurant - The food at the Black Whale was consistently very good, ranging from traditional Azorean cooking to grilled seafood, steaks, and chicken. It seems to attract more tourists than locals.
- Mercado do Vila – The mercado has an ideal location, just across from the water. It has four chefs and four cuisines to choose from. If you are looking for variety, this is the place to go.
Best Places to Stay in Vila Franca do Campo
- Convento de São Francisco – A unique and historic stay in a 17th-century convent. This is a 10+ minute walk from the harbor and marina, but sits right next to the gardens.
- Olive Boutique Guesthouse – Wonderful guesthouse with air conditioned rooms, sea views, and rooftop pool to enjoy the views while you swim.
- Vacation Rentals – There are numerous locally owned rentals, often with patios, beach access, or mountain views. We loved our vacation home, with a terrace overlooking the harbor and the islet.

Hill top chapel, peaceful beaches and an authentic fishing village – right up my alley! I love how you bring these off-beat parts of Portugal for an authentic experience – saving this for a future visit.
Thank you for the feedback!
A day trip to swim in a volcanic crater? I’m sold! Beyond that, I love these little towns that have a more laidback, authentic feel to them. Thank you for putting it on my radar!
Thank you for the feedback. Hope you can visit!
I have never heard of this place but you make it sound very appealing (especially the sweet cheese tarts, haha).
Thank you for the feedback!
You sold me on Vila Franca do Campo! It looks like a paradise and I would love to see those Vila Franca Islets with my own eyes… thank you for sharing all the insights!
Thank you for the feedback!
You must be staying in Portugal for an extended period. I am jealous. I definitely need to visit the Azores. I loved Madeira. The hiking was incredible. It is a great getaway in January.
I’d suggest Azores in Spring or Fall. I also loved visiting Madeira in January. We always managed to find part of the island without too much rain.
Such a lovely guide to Vila Franca do Campo! I had no idea the islet was a volcanic crater, so cool! Your tips make it easy to plan a visit, and now I definitely want to take that boat ride and explore the natural pool!
Thank you for the feedback. Hope you have a chance to visit!
This area is high on my wish list and I don’t know why I have not yet made it there. Thanks for all this great information. Saving.
Thank you for the feedback!
I have only been to the chapel/ viewpoint and it so beautiful! Definitely need to explore more
Thank you for your feedback. Hope you can explore more on a return trip.
Villa Franca Do Campo is so beautiful. I would just love the idea of a sunset coastal walk with my partner. The vibes are just unmatchable.
Hope you have a chance to visit!
Vila Franca do Campo is beautiful and has so many things to do. It’s surprising that it’s less crowded than the capital!
I agree. Ponta Delgada is the cruise ship port though (in addition to being the capital), so definitely has more crowds.
Sold on the cheese tarts alone! I’d never heard of these and I’d love to try one!
My family says they’re delicious (I can’t eat them personally unfortunately)!
The Azores offers so many hidden gems. You could spend months exploring and still not see them all.
I agree, all the more reason for repeat visits.
This trip looks and sounded like it was spectacular! What a great practical guide to get the most out of visiting the islands. What would you suggest as the best time to visit the Azores for lower tourist level?
ps. the sweet cheese tarts look really interesting; the box piqued my curiosity. They kind of look like little brie cheeses!
The fewest tourists would be there in winter, though it is peak rainy season. I’d suggest spring or fall (April-May or September-October). We loved our April visit, though you do risk more rain than in the peak of summer.
Wow, it looks so beautiful! From outdoor activities, the historical town and those cheese tarts, I’m sold!
Thank you for the feedback!
I’ve only been to the Azores for one day on a cruise from Southampton to Sydney and from memory I really loved seeing the lakes and the old town. Hopefully I will get back there one day. Thanks for the inspiration.
Glad you had a chance to visit the area. If you stopped in São Miguel, you likely saw Ponta Delgada’s old town and either Furnas Lake or Sete Cidades lakes.
