Landscapes

São Miguel Landscapes

The largest island in the Azores, São Miguel is known for its volcanic hot springs, emerald-green crater lakes, dramatic coastal cliffs, and volcanic islet. You’ll find:

  • Iron-rich thermal baths in Furnas,
  • Tranquil lakes like Lagoa do Fogo and Lagoa do Congro,
  • Incredible viewpoints over the twin lakes at Sete Cidades,
  • Numerous coastal lighthouses,
  • Sleepy rural villages,
  • Walking trails through Europe’s only working tea plantation,
  • Sandy beaches (as well as some rocky ones).

While there are botanic gardens in Ponta Delgada, the island’s capital, these are smaller in scale and diversity compared to those in Madeira.

Madeira Landscapes

Madeira, nicknamed the “Island of Eternal Spring,” is steeper and more dramatic. It has:

  • Soaring cliffs dropping into the Atlantic,
  • Terraced hillsides,
  • Laurisilva (laurel) cloud forests,
  • Botanical gardens with local, as well as diverse international gardens.
  • Beaches tend to be rocky, and many swimmers enjoy the natural pools instead.

Hiking & Outdoor Activities

São Miguel Hiking & Outdoor Activities

São Miguel offers trails around lakes, forests, and coasts, which are perfect for casual hikers. A few of the top hikes are:

While you can find challenging hikes, we enjoyed many easy hikes around São Miguel as well. One of the most non-traditional “hikes” we enjoyed is the Walking with rescued donkeys experience in Agua d’Alto.

In addition to hikes, don’t miss out on:

  • Kayaking to the Vila Franca Islet,
  • Whale or dolphin spotting with a marine biologist,
  • Biking or paddle boarding around the Sete Cidades lakes,
  • Canyoning and rappelling,
  • Jeep and 4×4 tours,
  • Surf lessons.

Madeira Hiking & Outdoor Activities

Madeira is a hiker’s paradise with more challenging and varied routes. Hiking is easily one of the top things to do while visiting Madeira. A few of the don’t miss hikes on Madeira include:

  • Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo (a dramatic ridge hike above the clouds) ,
  • Levada das 25 Fontes, a lush walk through waterfalls and tunnels,
  • Stunning levada walks, along old irrigation channels (now hiking trails),
  • Ponta de São Lourenço, a beautiful hike along the seashore (you can even hike one way, taking a boat back to the start).

Beyond hiking, don’t miss:

  • Dolphin and whale watching tours;
  • Windsurfing, sailing, and kayaking;
  • Surf and SUP lessons;
  • Funchal city basket ride;

Hot Springs & Natural Pools

São Miguel Hot Springs & Natural Pools

This is where São Miguel really shines. The Furnas valley is home to multiple geothermal hot springs. Our favorite is the natural iron rich hot springs found in Poça da Dona Beija. The luxurious Terra Nostra Gardens, which combine both hot springs and a extensive gardens, is worth a visit as well.

In addition to visiting these incredible hot springs, don’t miss a stop at Ponta da Ferraria, a natural pool built right into the coast. The waves can be rough, but the views are worth a stop even if you opt not to swim.

Madeira Hot Springs & Natural Pools

There are no hot springs in Madeira since the island doesn’t have geothermal activity. You’ll find natural pools in Porto Moniz and Sexal for a unique swim. The views and experience are amazing, though the water temperature can be chilly, especially when visiting Madeira in winter.

São Miguel vs Madeira Hot Springs & Natural Pools Verdict:

  • São Miguel is the clear winner for hot spring soaks.
  • For Natural Pools, Madeira has a broader range of options.

Culture

São Miguel Culture

São Miguel’s capital, Ponta Delgada, is charming and low-key with cobbled streets and traditional churches. The island’s former capital of Vila Franca do Campo offers an even more low key alternative base for exploring this beautiful island, with the stunning viewpoint at the Nossa Senhora da Paz Chapel and unique Vila Franca do Campo volcanic islet. We enjoyed spending the week leading up to Easter in this charming town, with processions going through the old town streets nearly nightly.

The island feels rural and authentic — perfect if you want to disconnect.

Madeira Culture

Funchal, Madeira’s capital, is more cosmopolitan, offering museums, nightlife, and gourmet dining. Madeira also has a strong cultural calendar with festivals, events, and parades. Consider visiting for the annual: Flower Festival (typically in May) or the Wine Festival (typically in August/September). Or, participate in unique activities such as basket rides.

As you venture further out of Funchal and small cities, much of the island is still quite rural, with the exception of resort areas. For those seeking a quieter experience, consider staying in Madeira’s more rural areas.

São Miguel vs Madeira Culture Verdict:

  • For urban energy and cultural depth, choose Madeira.
  • For tranquility and authenticity, São Miguel delivers.

Accessibility & Getting Around

São Miguel Accessibility

Ponta Delgada on São Miguel is easy to reach via direct flights from Lisbon and Porto, and from a few European and North American cities, depending on the time of year. Flying to other islands of the Azores is possible with SATA Airlines.

A rental car is essential to explore the island fully. Roads are generally in very good shape, making it easy to navigate the island. If you opt not to get a rental car and base yourself in Ponta Delgada, you can arrange for day tours to the island's various attractions. Bus travel is occasionally an option, but on very limited routes.

Madeira Accessibility

Madeira has a bigger international airport with more direct flights from mainland Europe and the UK. There are limited direct flights from North America that operate seasonally.

Roads are steep and sometimes narrow, but they are well maintained, and there’s also a good bus system and guided tours.

São Miguel vs Madeira Accessibility Verdict:

  • Madeira is easier to reach from Europe and is slightly more navigable if you don’t want to rent a car.
  • São Miguel is quite easy to reach via Portugal. For those who enjoy the independence of a rental car, or who enjoy day tours, São Miguel can be a great option.

São Miguel has charming quintas, which are family-run guesthouses, as well as farm stays at affordable prices. There are plenty of local hotels, as well as numerous vacation rentals to choose from. Most are quite reasonably priced, especially when you get out of Ponta Delgada.

  • Cozido das Furnas, a stew cooked in volcanic soil;
  • Azorean pineapples, typically smaller and sweeter than elsewhere (be sure to visit to the pineapple plantations);

Final Verdict: São Miguel vs Madeira for Your Vacation?

These Portuguese islands are both incredible. Honestly, it's hard to go wrong with either island. Here is our quick summary:

  • São Miguel is best for those seeking a quieter escape, hot springs, volcanic lakes, and lush scenery that feels off the beaten path.
  • Madeira is best for world-class hiking, a lively capital, diverse food, high-end lodging and resorts, and more infrastructure.

If both of these islands appeals to you, why not visit both as we've done? You can even pair them with a visit to the Portuguese mainland or with a visit to the Spanish island of Tenerife.

Best Time to Visit São Miguel vs Madeira

São Miguel is at its best from late April to October. The weather is typically warm and the hydrangeas are in bloom (June–July) along dry trails. Spring and early fall are ideal for fewer crowds and lush landscapes. Winter has extensive rain, and is a less ideal time for a visit.

Madeira is a year-round destination, thanks to its mild subtropical climate. That said, April to October offers the sunniest days for hiking and swimming. Spring is especially beautiful during the Madeira Flower Festival.
